            "description": "<u>EDIC candidacy exam</u><br>\r\nExam president: Prof. Nicolas Flammarion<br>\r\nThesis advisor: Prof. Pascal Fua<br>\r\nCo-examiner: Prof. Alexander Mathis<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<u>Abstract</u><br>\r\nMany high-impact problems in science and engineering reduce to optimizing a complex objective, where each evaluation is costly and often unreliable: physical experiments fail, simulators diverge, and stochastic systems return noisy feedback. Classical black-box optimizers struggle in this regime, where evaluation budgets are tight and the feasible region is hard to characterize a priori. Our work investigates how the statistical expressivity of modern generative samplers can be leveraged in black-box optimization. We propose that these samplers enable efficient navigation of feasible sets and optimization of geometrically complex objectives under limited, unreliable observations. <br>\r\n<br>\r\nTwo complementary lines of work have already been studied. The main one, SPARROW, demonstrated that a sampler-driven optimizer can substantially reduce the number of function calls needed to maximize complex and unreliable objectives. A parallel line established that samplers can be steered to satisfy hard constraints without sacrificing the statistical diversity of the generated samples. Because SPARROW imposes minimal assumptions on the underlying sampler, these constrained samplers can drive it directly, opening a path to constrained black-box optimization.<br>\r\n<br>\r\nBuilding on these results, two directions are planned. The first is theoretical: a deeper mathematical study of sampler-driven optimization, drawing on the broader literature on sample-efficient black-box optimization, in order to derive stronger guarantees and more efficient algorithms. The second is applied: applying the methods to concrete domains and exploiting the structure those domains expose to sharpen performance beyond what a pure black-box treatment can achieve.<br>\r\n<br>\r\nThe applications of low-budget black-box optimization are diverse, including engineering design (e.g. aerodynamic shape optimization, mechanical components), scientific discovery (e.g. protein and molecule design under synthesizability and stability constraints), and the safety and security of opaque ML systems (e.g. query-efficient adversarial probing, red-teaming of black-box models).<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<u>Selected papers</u><br>\r\n ",

With memory accounting for nearly 50% of server costs in modern data centres, provisioning large DRAM capacities significantly increases total cost of ownership (TCO). Tiered memory architectures combine memories with different capacities, latencies, and cost characteristics to improve cost efficiency while satisfying application performance requirements. Application performance in these architectures is highly sensitive to page placement decisions. Consequently, making informed placement decisions requires precise tracking of data access patterns and accurate identification of hot pages.<br>\r\n<br>\r\nExisting operating systems commonly rely on hardware-maintained access bits in page table entries to estimate memory access behaviour and identify hot data regions. They periodically scan the application's entire virtual address space to construct workload access profiles. However, linear scanning of page table access bits does not scale for modern applications with terabyte-scale memory footprints. Since scanning overhead scales with the memory footprint, a single full scan can take several seconds for workloads with large memory footprints. Reducing scanning frequency lowers monitoring overhead but also decreases profiling accuracy and responsiveness to changing access patterns, resulting in a fundamental tradeoff between profiling accuracy and monitoring overhead. Therefore, we need scalable, low-overhead mechanisms for access monitoring in next-generation memory management systems.<br>\r\n<br>\r\nIn this talk, I will discuss recent approaches to scalable memory access profiling in large-memory systems.             "description": "<strong>ABSTRACT</strong><br>\r\nApp-based, on-demand transport systems have transformed urban mobility by enabling real-time coordination between vehicles and users. Yet behind this flexibility lies a fundamental tension: operational decisions that appear beneficial in the present can deteriorate the future state of the system. This talk explores these temporal frictions in assigned on-demand systems—where passengers and vehicles are matched before meeting—and how they shape the performance and reliability of shared mobility services.<br>\r\nFirst, we show how assignment decisions evolve through what we term the Increasing Gap Dynamics, a negative feedback cycle through which vehicles progressively concentrate in space, reducing system efficiency over time. We then examine how a tension between efficiency and reliability emerges: while highly dynamic operations can improve short-term efficiency and flexibility, they may also increase unreliability by exposing passengers to future, uncertain requests. We discuss how this tension manifests both in routing decisions and in the selection of pickup and dropoff locations, and show how carefully designed anticipatory techniques can help reconcile these competing objectives.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n <br>\r\n<strong>SHORT BIO</strong><br>\r\nDr Andrés Fielbaum is a Senior Lecturer in Transport Engineering at the University of Sydney and a DECRA Fellow of the Australian Research Council. His work lies at the intersection of transport systems and applied mathematics, with a focus on public transport, on-demand mobility, and developing analytical models to inform system design and operations. He completed his PhD in Systems Engineering at Universidad de Chile in 2019 and held a postdoctoral appointment at TU Delft between 2019-2023.<br>\r\n<br>\r\nDr Fielbaum has authored over 35 peer-reviewed journal articles in leading outlets and serves as an Associate Editor for Transportation Research Part B: Methodological,  and the Journal of Intelligent Transportation Systems.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n ",

One leading idea is that RNA played a central role because it can act both as genetic material and as a catalyst. A major challenge has been that known RNA polymerase ribozymes, the catalysts of RNA copying, are large and complex, making them difficult to copy and unlikely to arise from prebiotic RNA sequence pools.<br>\r\n<br>\r\nIn this seminar, Edoardo Gianni will present QT45, a compact 45-nucleotide RNA polymerase ribozyme discovered from random RNA sequence pools. QT45 can catalyse the two essential reactions required for RNA self-replication: the synthesis of itself and the synthesis of its complementary strand. This work suggests that RNA-copying activity may be more common in sequence space than previously thought. This talk explores how music-driven conversational systems can bridge the gap between algorithmic recommendation and psychological intervention. The journey begins with establishing a foundation of trust through user-centric exploration. Using conversational music recommenders as a case study, I will discuss how critiquing strategies—such as progressive and cascading suggestions—shape user perceptions of helpfulness and serendipity. However, because trust is personal, I demonstrate how individual traits, including personality and trust propensity, dictate whether a user thrives under system-led or user-led initiatives.<br>\r\nBuilding on this rapport, the talk examines how these interfaces transition from suggesting songs to fostering psychological well-being. I will illustrate how music acts as a catalyst for self-awareness, using agents to guide users through emotional resonance and self-reflection. Furthermore, I will share findings on the role of generative AI in music-based reminiscence for older adults, where adaptive dialogue helps overcome cognitive barriers to memory recall. Collectively, these studies provide a roadmap for designing AI that moves beyond the playlist, transforming music-based chatbots into sustained partners for emotional and psychological health.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<strong>Bio</strong><br>\r\nProfessor Li Chen is currently a Full Professor and Associate Head (Research) in the Department of Computer Science at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU). She obtained her PhD degree in Computer Science from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland, and her Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Peking University, China. Her recent research focus has mainly been on conversational AI, explainable AI, recommender systems, and human-computer interaction. She has authored and co-authored over 160 publications, with over 13,000 citations (H-index 53). Her co-authored papers have received several awards, such as the RecSys’24 Best Student Paper Award, CHI’22 Honourable Mention Award, UMAP’20 Best Student Paper Award, UMUAI 2018 Best Paper Award, and UMAP’15 Best Student Paper Award. She received the President’s Award for Outstanding Performance in Teaching (Individual) 2024/25 and the President’s Award for Outstanding Performance in Research Supervision 2022/23. She has been included in the list of the world’s top 2% most-cited scientists by Stanford University since 2021, and the list of the Best Computer Science Scientists 2025/2026 by Research.com.<br>\r\n<br>\r\nShe is now an ACM senior member, founding co-editor-in-chief of ACM Transactions on Recommender Systems (TORS), steering committee member of ACM Conference on Recommender Systems (RecSys), associate editor of International Journal of Human-Computer Studies (IJHCS), editorial board member of User Modeling and User-Adapted Interaction Journal (UMUAI), and associate editor of ACM Transactions on Interactive Intelligent Systems (TiiS). These systems form a distributed, heterogeneous infrastructure whose security depends on complex and largely opaque implementations across the stack. Cellular infrastructure underpins everyday communication, emergency response, transport, and industrial systems, yet existing research often focuses on isolated components or stateless message handling, leaving state-dependent vulnerabilities and cross-component interactions insufficiently explored. <br>\r\n<br>\r\nThis thesis aims to develop methods to infer and explore protocol state in closed and partially observable implementations, combining active automata learning, dynamic analysis, and targeted testing. It begins with baseband firmware and core-network components, then extends across key trust boundaries such as the Radio Interface Layer, non-cellular interworking, and voice and messaging infrastructure. The goal is to identify vulnerabilities arising from logical flaws, memory-safety issues, and inconsistencies in how state and trust are handled across components.<br>\r\n<br>\r\nBuilding on these insights, the thesis derives lightweight hardening for deployed systems, including boundary mediation and flow-based policy validation.
