Doctoral candidates are exposed to the academic and non-academic sector to develop competences for innovation and to enhance employability.<br>\r\n<br>\r\nThere are 3 sub-schemes for the MSCA-DNs:\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>Standard</strong> → PhD students must be enrolled for doctoral studies, the doctoral program includes secondments to project partners.</li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Industrial</strong> → PhD students must be enrolled for doctoral studies; they must spend 50% of their time in the non-academic sector.</li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Joint Doctorates</strong> → PhD students must be enrolled for doctoral studies which lead to a “joint doctoral degree”. EPFL can only participate if the following institutions (other than EPFL) participate in the project: ENS Lyon, UCLouvain and ETHZ.</li>\r\n</ul>\r\n<strong>Duration and Funding</strong><br>\r\nThe consortium applies for a project with a duration of 4 years. The financial contribution covers the participation of doctoral candidates for the duration of 3 years and research, training and networking costs covering the whole project duration. She established her research group at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in 2001, where her main discoveries included the finding that protein assembly pathways are stereotypical and conserved. In 2013, she transitioned to the Wellcome Genome Campus, where she became the first and, to date, the only faculty member appointed across both the EMBL-European Bioinformatics Institute and the Wellcome Sanger Institute. In 2016, she was appointed as the Head of the Cellular Genetics programme at the Wellcome Sanger Institute and co-founded the Human Cell Atlas initiative. From April 2024, she was appointed chair in Stem Cell Medicine at the University of Cambridge, within the Department of Medicine and the Cambridge Stem Cell Institute. Additionally, Sarah dedicates part of her time to GlaxoSmithKline and to EnsoCell Therapeutics, the startup company she co-founded. Reflecting the growing importance of mathematics in life sciences research, such reform should bridge the gap between the mathematics students learn and the mathematics used in research.<br>\r\n<br>\r\nIn this talk, <a href=\"https://teaching.ucla.edu/profile/steve-bennoun/\">Steve Bennoun</a>, UCLA, will present how the study of modeling and dynamical systems can be used to create a first-year course that introduces mathematical concepts used in life sciences research in a contextualized way.<br>\r\n<br>\r\nStudents first learn to write models for important biological systems such as hormone levels, epidemiological models, and predator-prey models.<br>\r\n<br>\r\nTaking a geometrical approach, students learn how to determine the long-term behaviors of models by studying phase plane trajectories and the stability of equilibrium points.<br>\r\n<br>\r\nThis enables the study of the concept of “biological switch” or how a cell can start or stop the production of a protein. This is followed by the important notion of qualitative change in a biological systems, or bifurcation.<br>\r\n<br>\r\nStudents learn in particular about Hopf bifurcations or how a system can start or stop oscillating. The second part of the course moves somewhat away from the geometrical approach and focuses on how to determine the stability of equilibrium points using the linearization of a model, motivating the study of the necessary notions from linear algebra by studying discrete-time models.<br>\r\n<br>\r\nThis talk will end with a discussion focusing on research by Sanders et al. The fundamental unit of chromatin, the nucleosome, consists of ~147 base pairs of DNA wrapped around a histone octamer composed of H2A, H2B, H3, and H4. These nucleosomes are connected by linker DNA, forming a “beads-on-a-string” structure that enables efficient packaging of the genome.<br>\r\nBeyond structural compaction, nucleosomes play a central role in regulating genome function. They can restrict access to DNA and act as barriers to essential processes such as transcription, replication, and repair. At the same time, nucleosomes serve as key epigenetic platforms, where histone modifications and histone variants modulate chromatin structure and dynamics to control gene activity.<br>\r\nTo better understand these regulatory mechanisms, we employ biochemical and structural approaches to investigate nucleosome structure and dynamics. Our studies aim to elucidate how structural transitions of nucleosomes influence DNA accessibility and ultimately govern genomic regulation. I will present our recent structural and biochemical insights and discuss their implications for understanding nucleosome-mediated genome regulation.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<strong>Bio:</strong><br>\r\nHitoshi Kurumizaka is a Professor at the Institute for Quantitative Biosciences, The University of Tokyo, Japan. After receiving his Ph.D. degree in 1995, he started his postdoctoral training at NIH in the USA, in the laboratory of Molecular Embryology (Alan Wolffe Lab), where he began chromatin research. In 1997, he joined RIKEN as a Research Scientist. He subsequently moved to Waseda University, where he served as Associate Professor and later as Professor of Molecular and Structural Biology. Since 2018, he has been Professor at the Institute for Quantitative Biosciences, The University of Tokyo. His research focuses on the structural basis of chromatin and epigenetic regulation in eukaryotic genomes. In 2020, he established an in-house cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) platform to advance high-resolution structural studies of chromatin and genome-associated protein complexes. Professor Kurumizaka has made significant contributions to the field of chromatin biology through structural and mechanistic studies of nucleosomes and genome-associated protein complexes.
