In this context, this talk will focus on recent research advances on biomass and CO2 conversion to sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), chemicals and bio-based materials. Considering the challenges associated with low-carbon resources, including dispersed distribution, significant fluctuations in raw material composition, and high conversion costs, a distributed-centralized system utilizing alcohols as key platform molecules has been proposed. Alcohol synthesis from biomass and CO2 will be presented with the focus on catalysis for methanol (thermocatalysis) and ethanol synthesis (electrocatalysis) from CO2. Conversion of alcohol to SAF will be introduced with discussions on the design of multifunctional catalysts for alcohol conversion, the dynamic evolution of catalytic sites, and the strategies for tuning product distributions. Additionally, a few examples of biobased materials, such as cellulose nanofiber-based biomaterials and bio-based nylon precursor and polyester precursor, will be presented.
\r\n
\r\nBio: Dr. Zhenglong Li is the “Qiushi” Chair Professor of Zhejiang University. In contrast to zero-sum games—which do not always capture conflict, even between two players—harmonic games may exhibit highly non-convex equilibrium configurations. In particular, if the game’s ambient dimension is odd, we show that the set of totally mixed Nash equilibria is a (typically non-convex) real algebraic variety of dimension at least one, which extends all the way to the boundary of the game’s strategy space. Despite the difficulties incurred by this complicated equilibrium structure, we provide an extrapolation-based variant of “follow-the-regularized-leader” (FTRL) which converges to Nash equilibrium with order-optimal regret guarantees: O(1) in self-play, and O( sqrt(T) ) against arbitrary play.
\r\n
\r\n
\r\nBiography
\r\nDavide Legacci is a PhD candidate in Computer Science at Université Grenoble Alpes, CNRS and Inria, within the GHOST team, supervised by Panayotis Mertikopoulos and Bary S. In this talk, I will discuss the potential of Topological Data Analysis (TDA) for gait pattern classification. Unlike conventional approaches that rely on explicit detection of Gait Events (GEs) to compute Spatiotemporal Gait Parameters (SGPs), TDA characterises the global structure of gait signals directly, capturing relationships and patterns in the data without requiring GEs. This is particularly relevant in real-world settings, where GE detection can be diQicult due to heterogeneity in walking conditions and gait patterns, potentially biasing clinically relevant metrics and, consequently, decision-making.
\r\nWithin our department, preliminary results have shown that TDA-based features can achieve classification performance comparable to that of SGPs in fall-risk assessment. These findings suggest that topology oQers a competitive alternative for representing gait data, with the potential to better handle variability across subjects and pathological
\r\nconditions.
\r\nBuilding on these results, we plan to further extend the TDA framework in two directions. First, we aim to investigate time-aware topological methods to better capture the
\r\ntemporal structure of gait signals. Second, we will explore Topological Deep Learning (TDL) approaches to reduce reliance on handcrafted design choices and potentially
\r\nimprove classification performance. By combining the robustness of topology with datadriven representation learning, this work seeks to provide robust tools for the classification of typical and pathological gait patterns.
\r\n
", "image_description": "", "creation_date": "2026-03-30T09:44:37", "last_modification_date": "2026-03-30T09:47:45", "link_label": "", "link_url": "", "canceled": "False", "cancel_reason": "", "place_and_room": "CM 1 517", "url_place_and_room": "https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==CM%201%20517", "url_online_room": "", "spoken_languages": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=api" ], "speaker": "Elena Botti, Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB)", "organizer": "Markus Kirolos", "contact": "Maroussia Schaffner", "is_internal": "False", "theme": "", "vulgarization": { "id": 2, "fr_label": "Public averti", "en_label": "Informed public" }, "registration": { "id": 3, "fr_label": "Entrée libre", "en_label": "Free" }, "keywords": "", "file": null, "icalendar_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/120224/", "category": { "id": 1, "code": "CONF", "fr_label": "Conférences - Séminaires", "en_label": "Conferences - Seminars", "activated": true }, "academic_calendar_category": null, "domains": [], "mementos": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/5/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/9/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/7/?format=api" ] }, { "id": 71457, "title": "lunch&LEARN: Bridging the gap between the math taught in first-year courses and the math used in life sciences research", "slug": "lunchlearn-bridging-the-gap-between-the-math-taugh", "event_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/lunchlearn-bridging-the-gap-between-the-math-taugh", "visual_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32806/200x112.jpg", "visual_large_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32806/720x405.jpg", "visual_maxsize_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32806/max-size.jpg", "lang": "en", "start_date": "2026-04-21", "end_date": "2026-04-21", "start_time": "12:15:00", "end_time": "13:00:00", "description": "
For more than two decades leading professional organizations have called for a reform of the mathematics education of biology and life sciences students. We found that the patterns of longitudinal change in neural network dynamics predicted psychosocial outcomes five years later in young adulthood.
\r\nWe found that “transcendent thinking” – seeing situations not just in terms of X happened to person A, which makes me feel thusly, but in terms of the larger societal and contextual forces that shaped how Person A was treated and how Person A reacted, the broader implications and lessons one can draw from that situation, and the larger issues it exemplifies or reveals—correlated with a particular set of neural activity dynamics and predicted future structural and functional neural development across the subsequent two years, controlling for the starting state of neural development, and independent of IQ and SES. Transcendent thinking also countered negative effects of exposure to community violence on structural brain development.
\r\nThe neural development predicted by transcendent thinking (the changes in the brain across the 2-year period) in turn predicted young adult identity strength, self-liking, relationship satisfaction, and achievement 5 years later.
\r\nThese findings reveal a novel predictor of neural development across mid-adolescence, and underscore the active role adolescents play in their own brain development through the meaning they make of the social world. Janelidze, L. Márki and W. Tholen in 2002, generalizes that of abelian category, and captures the homological properties that the categories of groups, associative algebras, Lie algebras and cocommutative Hopf algebras over a field have in common. Internal structures behave surprisingly well in semi-abelian categories. For example, any internal reflexive graph admits at most one internal category structure, and the categories of internal categories and internal groupoids are isomorphic. Moreover, the category of internal groupoids is equivalent to the category of internal crossed modules. The notion of internal crossed module in any semi-abelian category was introduced by G. Janelidze in 2003, and recovers in particular the classical notion of crossed module of groups. The fact that the category of internal groupoids in a semi-abelian category is itself semi-abelian implies that also the category of internal n-fold groupoids is well-behaved.
\r\n
\r\nIn this talk, I will prove that the full subcategory of internal n-groupoids in a semi-abelian category is a Birkhoff subcategory of the category of internal n-fold groupoids, and provide a simple description of the corresponding reflection for n=2. In the abelian context, the internal n-groupoids yield a torsion-free subcategory of the category of internal n-fold groupoids, and it is possible to characterize (higher) central extensions and compute generalized Hopf formulae for homology.
\r\n
\r\nPart of this talk is based on joint work with Marino Gran
\r\n
", "image_description": "", "creation_date": "2026-03-25T12:18:18", "last_modification_date": "2026-03-25T12:25:27", "link_label": "", "link_url": "", "canceled": "False", "cancel_reason": "", "place_and_room": "MA B1 504", "url_place_and_room": "https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==MA%20B1%20504", "url_online_room": "", "spoken_languages": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=api" ], "speaker": "Nadja Egner, UC Louvain", "organizer": "Markus Kirolos", "contact": "Maroussia Schaffner", "is_internal": "False", "theme": "", "vulgarization": { "id": 2, "fr_label": "Public averti", "en_label": "Informed public" }, "registration": { "id": 3, "fr_label": "Entrée libre", "en_label": "Free" }, "keywords": "", "file": null, "icalendar_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/120179/", "category": { "id": 1, "code": "CONF", "fr_label": "Conférences - Séminaires", "en_label": "Conferences - Seminars", "activated": true }, "academic_calendar_category": null, "domains": [], "mementos": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/5/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/9/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/7/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=api" ] }, { "id": 71448, "title": "Topological properties of rough fluids and plasmas", "slug": "topological-properties-of-rough-fluids-and-plasmas", "event_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/topological-properties-of-rough-fluids-and-plasmas", "visual_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32796/200x112.jpg", "visual_large_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32796/720x405.jpg", "visual_maxsize_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32796/max-size.jpg", "lang": "en", "start_date": "2026-04-24", "end_date": "2026-04-24", "start_time": "14:15:00", "end_time": null, "description": "
Abstract:
\r\nAs anticipated by Onsager's conjecture, low-regularity solutions of the Euler equations exhibit greater flexibility than classical solutions. The key tool is a novel implementation of convex integration that preserves the topology of the streamlines throughout the iteration. In the second part we extend these ideas to the MHD equations, constructing continuous weak solutions with constant nonzero helicity that nevertheless fail to conserve energy and cross helicity.
", "image_description": "", "creation_date": "2026-03-25T09:22:27", "last_modification_date": "2026-03-25T09:22:27", "link_label": "", "link_url": "", "canceled": "False", "cancel_reason": "", "place_and_room": "MA B1 11", "url_place_and_room": "https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==MA%20B1%2011", "url_online_room": "", "spoken_languages": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=api" ], "speaker": "Dr. Javier Peñafiel-Tomás (ICMAT)", "organizer": "Prof. Maria Colombo", "contact": "Prof. Maria Colombo", "is_internal": "False", "theme": "", "vulgarization": { "id": 1, "fr_label": "Tout public", "en_label": "General public" }, "registration": { "id": 3, "fr_label": "Entrée libre", "en_label": "Free" }, "keywords": "", "file": null, "icalendar_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/120178/", "category": { "id": 1, "code": "CONF", "fr_label": "Conférences - Séminaires", "en_label": "Conferences - Seminars", "activated": true }, "academic_calendar_category": null, "domains": [], "mementos": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/7/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/259/?format=api" ] }, { "id": 71446, "title": "Contributing to community-driven open-source in the age of agentic AI: my scikit-learn experience", "slug": "contributing-to-community-driven-open-source-in-th", "event_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/contributing-to-community-driven-open-source-in-th", "visual_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32794/200x112.jpg", "visual_large_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32794/720x405.jpg", "visual_maxsize_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32794/max-size.jpg", "lang": "en", "start_date": "2026-04-16", "end_date": "2026-04-16", "start_time": "14:00:00", "end_time": "15:00:00", "description": "The Keynote of the 3rd Lemanic Life Sciences Hackathon is open to the EPFL Community.
\r\n
\r\nIn this talk, Guillaume will go back in time 10 years ago to my personal contributions to the scikit-learn project. After a fixed number of steps, the left tail has a Gaussian profile under minimal assumptions. Remarkably, a similar phenomenon occurs when we consider a positive random walk on the cone of positive-semidefinite matrices. After a fixed number of steps, the minimum eigenvalue is described by a Gaussian random matrix model.
\r\nThis talk introduces a new way to make this intuition rigorous. The methodology addresses an open problem in computational mathematics about sparse random embeddings. The presentation targets a general mathematical audience.
\r\nPreprint: https://arxiv.org/abs/2501.16578
\r\n
\r\nPlease register on the following form : https://forms.gle/ppXwKo9HmTgFk3rc7", "image_description": "", "creation_date": "2026-04-01T11:03:30", "last_modification_date": "2026-04-01T11:03:45", "link_label": "", "link_url": "", "canceled": "False", "cancel_reason": "", "place_and_room": "BCH 2201", "url_place_and_room": "https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==BCH%202201", "url_online_room": "", "spoken_languages": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=api" ], "speaker": "Prof. Joel A.
