"description": "
\r\nDr. Beat Frey, Dr. Joel Rüthi, Dr. Ivano Brunner, Beat Stierli
\r\n
\r\nEléments biographiques
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n>>> Site web de l'artiste Rahel Oberhummer
\r\n
\r\nVernissage le jeudi 7 mai 2026 à 18 :30
\r\nExposition visible jusqu’au 11 octobre 2026
\r\nHall du RLC / entrée libre
\r\n
\r\nImage : Dioszegia patagonica 001, Pochonia/Metacordyceps chlamydosporia 205, Pseudogymnoascus pannorum 511, Potato Dextrose Agar with sepia ink, 2022.
",

            "description": "
Organic Electrochemical Transistors (OECTs) have gained significant research interest for applications as chemical/biological sensors and in neuromorphic circuits due to their high transconductance, efficient electron-ion coupling, compatibility with aqueous solutions, conformability, and low voltage operation. These advantages stem from organic mixed ionic-electronic conductors (OMIECs) that enable simultaneous transport of electronic charges and ionic species, which can be direct processed via electropolymerization. This technique offers precise control over polymer film thickness and morphology, facilitating the formation of nanostructures and enabling selective patterning on individual channels without complex photolithography, simplifying OECT fabrication and integration. In this talk, I will discuss the performance of OECTs using various electropolymerized channel materials, starting with PEDOT for dopamine detection, followed PEDOT:N3, a clickable OMIEC variant whose threshold voltage can be finely tuned through control of the electropolymerization parameters, and finally P-tri-DPA for zinc ion detection, achieving low limits of detection and high specificity for Zn²⁺ ions. These findings highlight the potential of electropolymerization and OMIEC materials engineering in developing advanced bioelectronic devices.
",

In this talk, I will suggest that theoretical computer science offers a way to design and build alternatives. Drawing on work on Self-Proving Models and on research with the Cetacean Translation Initiative (Project CETI), I will describe how theory can help turn ideas such as verification and respect for the object of study into well-defined research questions.
\r\n \r\n
\r\n\t
Talk 2: Before You Train That Model: Legal and Ethical Basics for AI Research at EPFL (15 min)
\r\n
\r\nBy Gaia Barazzetti – Senior Research Ethics Compliance Officer, EPFL Research Office and Valentin Conrad – Senior Legal Counsel, EPFL Legal Affairs
\r\n
\r\nTaking scientific integrity as a starting point, this presentation provides an overview of the legal and ethical rules that apply to AI research at EPFL. Topics include data protection, copyright, and ethical requirements for AI projects, particularly when people or personal data are involved.
\r\n \r\n
\r\n\t
Talk 3: Ethics Committees and AI in Research: A Practical Perspective (10 min)
\r\n
\r\nBy Pablo Diaz – Research Ethics Officer, UNIL
\r\n
\r\nAs artificial intelligence becomes embedded in research practices, new ethical questions arise regarding how research is designed, conducted, and interpreted. This presentation focuses on the practical work of ethics committees in reviewing research projects involving AI. It highlights how committees examine assumptions, risks, impacts, and responsibilities throughout the research process, including the use of AI as a tool and as an object of study. The talk aims to clarify the specific contribution of ethics review in supporting responsible and reflective AI enabled research.
\r\n \r\n
\r\n\t
Talk 4: AI for research and research about AI: a responsible design approach (10 min)
\r\n
\r\nBy Cécile Hardebolle – Teaching Advisor (EPFL CEDE), Project Officer (EPFL LEARN) and Lecturer (EPFL SIN)
\r\n
\r\nAI is increasingly present in research, whether as a tool or as an object of research, which raises specific risks if ethical considerations are overlooked. This talk presents a practical approach to identifying, assessing, and managing these risks throughout the research lifecycle by embedding responsible design practices from the start.
\r\n \r\n
\r\n\t
Panel for Q&A, open discussion
\r\n
\r\nModeration by Nóra Turoman, Training Specialist for Academic and Research Support – EPFL Library.
\r\n \r\n

\r\nThe event is free upon registration.
