Played continuously by the ensemble throughout the piece, the motif evolves under Julian Sartorius’s direction as he adapts the instrumentation (adding, substituting, or removing objects or instruments).<br>\r\n<br>\r\nA journey through minimalism, repetition, musical progression, and a deluge of sound. The concert stems from an experiment in which the addition, removal, or modification of basic elements generates new content. It also incorporates playfulness, the freedom to assemble elements, and the surprise of unexpected sound combinations. Much like many scientific protocols, this method—here applied to music—suggests avenues of convergence between scientific and creative practices.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<iframe allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"315\" src=\"https://www.youtube.com/embed/hZ4HRiNTQC4?si=RXzPTogaFJIKH2dK\" width=\"560\"></iframe><br>\r\nAt 7 p.m. that evening, as part of the opening reception for the installation <strong>NO/NC (Normally Open/Normally Closed)</strong>, co-created with Archizoom, Julian Sartorius will give a solo concert.<br>\r\n---<br>\r\n<strong>Biography of <a href=\"http://www.juliansartorius.com/\">Julian Sartorius</a></strong><br>\r\nDrummer, percussionist, and artist Julian Sartorius shapes sounds into unique forms. His precise and rich rhythmic patterns are true explorations of the hidden sounds of found objects and prepared instruments, bridging the gap between organic timbres and the language of electronic music. Julian Sartorius has released numerous solo albums, created audiovisual works, collaborated with musicians, writers, and artists, and performed in everything from intimate venues to festival stages.</div>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"BCX2 Ltr OutlineElement SCXW167897111\"><br>\r\nTrained at the jazz schools in Bern and Lucerne under the guidance of musicians such as Fabian Kuratli, Pierre Favre, and Norbert Pfammatter, Julian Sartorius developed a unique musical approach at a very early age. Fascinated by small-scale variations, the interplay of tension and release, density, and vibration, he has created projects such as the 12-vinyl box set *Beat Diary* (Everest Records, 2012), comprising 365 rhythmic pieces accompanied by a book of photographs; the daily series of eight-second loops “Morphblog” (2013–2019); and “Depot,” an audiovisual installation for 16 speakers and 16 screens, presented at the Kunstmuseum in Thun. For his album “Hidden Tracks: Basel – Geneva” (Everest Records, 2017), Julian walked more than 200 kilometers with his drumsticks and recording equipment, playing and capturing a multitude of sounds and textures from objects he encountered along the way.<br>\r\n </div>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"BCX2 Ltr OutlineElement SCXW167897111\">In recent years, Julian Sartorius has collaborated with numerous musicians, including Sophie Hunger, Sylvie Courvoisier, Gyda Valtysdottir, Dimlite, Shahzad Ismaily, and Dan Carey. His instantly recognizable percussion work also appears on recent albums by Kate Tempest, Matthew Herbert, and James Zoo. Julian Sartorius has toured and performed in North and South America, Asia, and Europe, sharing the stage with artists such as Marc Ribot, Deerhoof, Faust, Jaki Liebezeit, and Arto Lindsay.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n--- <br>\r\n<a href=\"http://usinesonore.ch/\"><strong>Usinesonore</strong></a><br>\r\nThe Usinesonore association shares its passion for music by promoting it through various activities in the Canton of Bern and beyond. It was previously invited to EPFL in 2017.<br>\r\nFounded in 2006 by Julien Annoni and Olivier Membrez, two young Bernese Jura natives passionate about contemporary music, the Usinesonore association organizes events centered on today’s music.<br>\r\n<br>\r\nThe association’s activities focus on three main areas: organizing the Usinesonore Festival, the Ensemble We Spoke, and organizing parallel events (traveling concerts, custom-designed events, outreach activities, etc.).<br>\r\n<br>\r\nEach event is shaped by careful consideration of how to share it with the audience. He also examines how those standards produce surprising side-effects as they are reinterpreted in practice. His book Pyrotechnic Cities: Architecture, Fire-Safety and Standardisation was published by Routledge in 2022, and describes the way that architectural design is an instrument of political agency. <br>\r\nHis work has been exhibited and published widely, including in Architectural Research Quarterly (arq), Arch+, and journalistic outlets such as Blueprint, Prospect, and Volume.<br>\r\nRoss has experience of practice in the UK and US, including a period of 5 years with Malcolm Fraser Architects, and maintains a relationship with professional practice as co-founder of ESALA Projects, a consultancy offering pro-bono and for-fee design services to public and third-sector clients. In response to CNS insult, including traumatic injury or implantation of a medical device, astrocytes undergo a conserved, temporally regulated reprogramming that reshapes their prioritized functions to protect adjacent neural tissue. The nature and extent of astrocyte reprogramming critically influences outcomes after CNS insult. For example, regeneration after traumatic CNS injury in adult mammals is limited by local responding astrocytes lacking sufficient self-renewal capacity. By contrast, the CNS of neonate (newborn) mammals possesses exceptional parenchymal repair capacity owing to immature astrocytes with elevated proliferative and migratory potential. In the context of an implanted medical device, the spatial extent of astrocyte reprogramming and how impacted astrocytes respond to any further device micromotion, latent infection, or other persistent device-derived stimuli, dictates device performance and longevity. Engineering astrocyte responses to promote targeted functional gains while preserving key capabilities of healthy neural tissue astrocytes will be critical to enabling effective neural regeneration therapies and improving long-term performance of implanted devices. In this talk, I will outline our emerging understanding of how adult astrocytes adaptively reprogram in response to CNS injury and implanted foreign bodies, drawing insights from innovative astrocyte-specific transcriptomic bioassays. I will also provide an overview of biomaterial and cell-grafting strategies that we are exploring to direct astrocyte responses in preclinical models of stroke, spinal cord injury, and foreign body responses.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<strong>Bio:</strong><br>\r\n<strong>Dr. Timothy O’Shea, PhD</strong> is an Assistant Professor in the Biomedical Engineering department at Boston University (BU). Tim grew up in Brisbane, Australia and completed a Bachelor of Medical Engineering (First Class Honours) and a Masters in Engineering Management at Queensland University of Technology (QUT) before moving to the US for graduate school. He completed his PhD study in Medical Engineering and Medical Physics within the collaborative Health Sciences and Technology program of the Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where we conducted PhD thesis research with Institute Professor Robert Langer. As a Postdoctoral Fellow in Neurobiology at UCLA, he worked with Professors Michael Sofroniew (Neurobiology) and Timothy Deming (Bioengineering) developing and testing novel bioengineering tools to study biological mechanisms involved in CNS injury and repair as well as the CNS foreign body response to implants.
