In this talk, I will discuss the potential of Topological Data Analysis (TDA) for gait pattern classification. Unlike conventional approaches that rely on explicit detection of Gait Events (GEs) to compute Spatiotemporal Gait Parameters (SGPs), TDA characterises the global structure of gait signals directly, capturing relationships and patterns in the data without requiring GEs. This is particularly relevant in real-world settings, where GE detection can be diQicult due to heterogeneity in walking conditions and gait patterns, potentially biasing clinically relevant metrics and, consequently, decision-making.<br>\r\nWithin our department, preliminary results have shown that TDA-based features can achieve classification performance comparable to that of SGPs in fall-risk assessment. These findings suggest that topology oQers a competitive alternative for representing gait data, with the potential to better handle variability across subjects and pathological<br>\r\nconditions.<br>\r\nBuilding on these results, we plan to further extend the TDA framework in two directions. First, we aim to investigate time-aware topological methods to better capture the<br>\r\ntemporal structure of gait signals. Second, we will explore Topological Deep Learning (TDL) approaches to reduce reliance on handcrafted design choices and potentially<br>\r\nimprove classification performance. Their intersection is therefore not an overlap but a relational field in which placement and movement continuously reify one another. This perspective invites complex mixed methods approaches based on methodological mapping across different forms of evidence, which can show how movements cluster or stretch, while narrative interviews, participatory mapping, and field observation can uncover how actors interpret routes, obstacles, and anchors in everyday life. The aim is not merely conventional triangulation, but conceptual integration: Using different methods to move between patterns in systems and interpretation of experience. Mixed methods research can theorize space-mobility while also exploring how they are experienced, governed, and contested.<br>\r\n <br>\r\nManfred Max Bergman is Chair of Social Research and Methodology at the University of Basel and Director of the Social Transitions Research Group. He works on methodological innovations to the study of sustainability transitions, inequality, health, corporate responsibility, and social change, with particular expertise in mixed methods research and case study design. He has contributed to scholarship on mobility, inequality, and public space through international comparative and interdisciplinary projects, and previously served as Editor in Chief of the Journal of Mixed Methods Research. The interaction and networking with the community is essential to our activity: indeed, we teach to and learn from each other. The circle symbolizes the flow of information among peers as well as a paradigm where crossbreeding of ideas and methods is key to scientific advances. This message will be portrayed with examples from my scientific career and a vision of the future.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<strong>About the speaker</strong><br>\r\nGiovanni De Micheli is currently the Scientific Director of the EcoCloud center at EPFL. He was professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Stanford and EPFL for 40 years. Prof. De Micheli is a Fellow of ACM, AAAS and IEEE, elected member of 4 Academies, including the US National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
