Join us for a hands-on morning of using and deploying the flagship model of the Swiss AI Initiative, learn first hand from the engineers and scientists working on Apertus.
\r\n
\r\nThe workshop runs from 9:30 to 12:30 at the EPFL AI Center Lounge in Lausanne. Doors open at 9:00.
\r\n
\r\nBackground: Apertus is a fully open large language model built in Switzerland, which is fully reproducible and can run on your own infrastructure. As a Foundation Model, it has already been adapted to specific contexts through post-training and fine-tuning processes. In addition to open access at all Swiss academic institutions, a growing number of Swiss and international commercial providers support Apertus for production deployment.
\r\n
\r\nThis workshop is also designed as a two-way conversation: alongside learning how to use and deploy Apertus, we want to hear how your organization is already working with AI, and where today's tools still fall short for you. We would like to hear about the languages, legal contexts, and use cases you operate in. This input will give us the opportunity to prioritize improvements for non-profit organizations on the Apertus roadmap.
\r\n
\r\nAt this workshop, you will have the chance to:\r\n

\r\n\t
See how Apertus, a fully open, Swiss-built LLM, can be deployed on your own infrastructure
\r\n\t
Get hands-on experience using the technology itself, not just a description of it
\r\n\t
Tell the team building Apertus where it's falling short for your work, and help shape where it goes next
\r\n
\r\nThe morning will include:\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
An introduction to Apertus: what it is, how it works, and why self-hosting is possible
\r\n\t
A live walkthrough of deploying Apertus on your own infrastructure
\r\n\t
Hands-on exercises applying Apertus to tasks relevant to your organization
\r\n
\r\nExact schedule will be sent to participants closer to the event.
\r\n
\r\n! REGISTRATION REQUIRED !", "image_description": "", "creation_date": "2026-09-28T13:24:00", "last_modification_date": "2026-09-28T13:29:08", "link_label": "Registration required", "link_url": "https://luma.com/k910o3e1", "canceled": "False", "cancel_reason": "", "place_and_room": "ELE 117", "url_place_and_room": "https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==ELE%20117", "url_online_room": "", "spoken_languages": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=api" ], "speaker": "See program", "organizer": "Swiss AI Initiative", "contact": "Clara Meister & Oleg Lavrovsky", "is_internal": "False", "theme": "", "vulgarization": { "id": 1, "fr_label": "Tout public", "en_label": "General public" }, "registration": { "id": 1, "fr_label": "Sur inscription", "en_label": "Registration required" }, "keywords": "", "file": null, "icalendar_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/121957/", "category": { "id": 1, "code": "CONF", "fr_label": "Conférences - Bimodality is common, but trimodality—that is, the ability to successfully navigate between aerial, aquatic, and terrestrial environments—is relatively rare. Multimodality is also challenging to achieve in engineered devices, vehicles, and robots; however, several animals are capable of regularly (and easily) traversing environmental boundaries. In this talk, we will outline several of the general adaptations that living organisms use to locomote between land, air, and water. We will then present recent work on the biomechanics and fluid dynamics of trimodal aquatic insects. These insects exhibit hybrid walking-swimming gaits when transitioning from land to shallow water; they also leverage surface tension, buoyancy, fluid drag, and aerodynamic forces to take off into flight directly from the water surface. They also display underwater agility, using their legs as paddles to propel themselves rapidly as they seek prey and/or escape from predators. They also have interesting morphological features to enable these transitions, including superhydrophobic wings and hemelytra, as well as dense setae lining the metathoracic legs. These bristle-like features create shape-morphing appendages for efficient swimming, and are also used to lever the insect’s body off the deforming water surface during takeoff. In this talk, we will present data from all three locomotor modes and discuss their implications for both fundamental biology and ecology as well as bioinspired engineering and technology development.
\r\n
\r\n
\r\nBiography: Dr. Margaret L. His documentaries address contemporary issues such as the crisis of democracy, the economic crisis, and the rise of populism, using dramatic techniques similar to those found in fiction. Among them, *Connu de nos services* (1997) addresses the scandal surrounding the political dossiers compiled by the Federal Police in the 1970s and 1980s. *Mais im Bundeshuus / Le Génie helvétique* (2003), one of Swiss cinema’s major box-office hits, follows the work of a parliamentary commission tasked with drafting a law on genetic engineering. *The Blocher Experiment* (2013) sparked intense controversy. *Cleveland vs. Wall Street* (2010), about the subprime mortgage crisis, was presented at the Cannes Film Festival (Directors’ Fortnight) and nominated for a César Award in France. His film *The Paris Opera* (2017) was subsequently widely distributed around the world. With this film, which drew more than 200,000 viewers to theaters, Jean-Stéphane Bron won the Swiss Film Award in the Best Documentary category for the third time in 2018. In 2021, Jean-Stéphane Bron released *Cinq nouvelles du cerveau*, a feature-length film that explores various mind-boggling questions related to advances in the fields of neuroscience and artificial intelligence. Between December 2021 and May 2022, he filmed the series *Ma rue de l’Ale* for RTS on his own street in Lausanne; the series was a huge hit with audiences.
\r\n
\r\nExploring reality through the eyes of those who shape it. These exciting developments are accompanied by new fundamental challenges that arise regarding the safety and reliability of these increasingly complex systems due to imperfect learning, system unknowns, and uncertain environments. Statistical tools for uncertainty quantification have gained popularity due to their ability to deal with these challenges. However, their guarantees rely on i.i.d. data, an assumption that is violated when control actions change the underlying data distribution.
\r\n
\r\nIn this talk, I will provide new insight to design safe controllers under distribution shifts using robust conformal prediction (CP). I will begin by advocating for the use of CP due to its simplicity, generality, and efficiency as opposed to existing optimization-based verification techniques. I will then provide an introduction to CP and summarize existing work that uses CP to design probabilistically safe controllers in dynamic environments. Subsequently, we will look into interactive settings where the system’s behavior may change the environment's behavior, and vice versa. This circular dependency creates an interaction-driven distribution shift that invalidates existing CP guarantees. To deal with this problem, we propose an iterative framework that episodically updates the controller while robustly maintaining safety guarantees by quantifying the potential impact of a controller update on the environment's behavior. We realize this via adversarially robust CP where we perform a regular CP step in each episode using observed data under the current controller, but then transfer safety guarantees across controller updates by analytically adjusting the CP result to account for distribution shifts. Lastly, I will show how these ideas extend to handling policy-induced distribution shifts that arise when using barrier/Lyapunov functions to control uncertain systems.
\r\n
\r\nBiography:
\r\nLars Lindemann is currently an Assistant Professor for Algorithmic Systems Theory in the Automatic Control Laboratory at ETH Zürich.
