"description": "
Hosted by Frédéric Grouiller, CIBM MRI HUG-UNIGE Section head, we are pleased to invite you to attend the CIBM 7T MRI Seminar on April 21st at 10:00 CEST by Caroline Le Ster from the CEA Neurospin, Paris who will be sharing on “Leveraging the potential of UHF scanners for fMRI studies”.
\r\nAbstract
\r\nThere is a growing availability of 7T scanners, with approximately 100 systems currently installed worldwide. These ultra-high-filed (UHF) scanners are particularly relevant for neuroimaging, where anatomical and functional images can be acquired with higher spatial and temporal resolution than on conventional scanners. However, UHF scanners remain difficult to operate, and understanding their specific limitations is essential. These systems indeed face several challenges arising from MR physics and biological effects that must be addressed within engineering constraints. Leverage the potential of UHF scanners, for instance through field monitoring, is therefore important to make the most of these scanners and benefit from the intrinsic SNR gain.
\r\nfMRI particularly benefits from the increase in magnetic field strength, enabling studies to be performed at higher resolution than at lower fields. In order to maintain reasonable acquisition times despite larger imaging matrices, several acceleration strategies have been developed, e.g. multi-slice EPI (SMS-EPI), three-dimensional EPI (3D-EPI) and non-Cartesian sampling schemes. In addition, functional contrasts also benefit from the field increase, including improved spatial localization of the BOLD contrast and the possibility to exploit VASO contrast.
",

            "description": "
Abstract:
\r\nAs anticipated by Onsager's conjecture, low-regularity solutions of the Euler equations exhibit greater flexibility than classical solutions. In the first part of this talk we focus on steady solutions, showing that in the low-regularity regime their streamlines can realize any prescribed topology, a phenomenon that cannot occur for classical solutions. The key tool is a novel implementation of convex integration that preserves the topology of the streamlines throughout the iteration. In the second part we extend these ideas to the MHD equations, constructing continuous weak solutions with constant nonzero helicity that nevertheless fail to conserve energy and cross helicity.
",

            "description": "
The notion of semi-abelian category, introduced by G. Janelidze, L. Márki and W. Tholen in 2002, generalizes that of abelian category, and captures the homological properties that the categories of groups, associative algebras, Lie algebras and cocommutative Hopf algebras over a field have in common. Internal structures behave surprisingly well in semi-abelian categories. For example, any internal reflexive graph admits at most one internal category structure, and the categories of internal categories and internal groupoids are isomorphic. Moreover, the category of internal groupoids is equivalent to the category of internal crossed modules. The notion of internal crossed module in any semi-abelian category was introduced by G. Janelidze in 2003, and recovers in particular the classical notion of crossed module of groups. The fact that the category of internal groupoids in a semi-abelian category is itself semi-abelian implies that also the category of internal n-fold groupoids is well-behaved.
\r\n
\r\nIn this talk, I will prove that the full subcategory of internal n-groupoids in a semi-abelian category is a Birkhoff subcategory of the category of internal n-fold groupoids, and provide a simple description of the corresponding reflection for n=2. In the abelian context, the internal n-groupoids yield a torsion-free subcategory of the category of internal n-fold groupoids, and it is possible to characterize (higher) central extensions and compute generalized Hopf formulae for homology.
\r\n
\r\nPart of this talk is based on joint work with Marino Gran
\r\n
",

We found that the patterns of longitudinal change in neural network dynamics predicted psychosocial outcomes five years later in young adulthood.
\r\nWe found that “transcendent thinking” – seeing situations not just in terms of X happened to person A, which makes me feel thusly, but in terms of the larger societal and contextual forces that shaped how Person A was treated and how Person A reacted, the broader implications and lessons one can draw from that situation, and the larger issues it exemplifies or reveals—correlated with a particular set of neural activity dynamics and predicted future structural and functional neural development across the subsequent two years, controlling for the starting state of neural development, and independent of IQ and SES. Transcendent thinking also countered negative effects of exposure to community violence on structural brain development.
\r\nThe neural development predicted by transcendent thinking (the changes in the brain across the 2-year period) in turn predicted young adult identity strength, self-liking, relationship satisfaction, and achievement 5 years later.
\r\nThese findings reveal a novel predictor of neural development across mid-adolescence, and underscore the active role adolescents play in their own brain development through the meaning they make of the social world. Implications for secondary education and pedagogy will be discussed.
\r\n
\r\n
",

Alongside a 'plurality of time', we are interested in the 'plurality of space'. Rather than transparency, it is the arrangement of different worlds face-to-face or side-by-side that creates this impression of density and richness in relationships.
\r\n
\r\nTo craft sustainable development, we believe that, alongside a body of fundamental knowledge, a spirit can be cultivated through tireless attempts, including failure, to develop a 'knowledge of the hand' capable of finding new forms of expression. The countless experiences that we have accumulated at MANSLAB over the past 15 years can undoubtedly be best recounted in the form of anecdotes. An anecdote is a historical detail or a characteristic of customs or character that becomes a short, entertaining story evoking emotions such as laughter or horror.
\r\n
\r\nThe students’ work that I am about to present illustrates certain tested, refined and proven principles, such as the indestructible link between ideas and the hand through the slow and joyful acquisition of knowledge; the economy of means to highlight the essential; errors and non-linearity as inspiring methods in the design process; and the cultivation of empirical, manual and physical knowledge that prioritises grasping sensory, supra-sensory and memory-based reality and is capable of creating new spaces. The launch of the book ANEKDOTA will take place at the same event.
\r\n
\r\nAbout the speaker:
\r\nMarco Bakker is born in Harlingen, Netherlands, in 1960. He first earned a degree in Civil Engineering from HTS Leeuwarden, before continuing his studies in Architecture and Urban Planning at Delft University of Technology, including spending a year abroad at EPFL. Following four years of experimentation in architecture and photography, he founded the firm Bakker & Blanc Architects (BABL) with Alexandre Blanc in 1992. At the same time, he worked as an assistant to Prof. Vincent Mangeat and visiting professor Kaschka Knapkiewicz at EPFL. From 2003 to 2009, he taught architectural design and theory at the BFH in Burgdorf. Following four years as visiting professors together with Alexandre Blanc, they were appointed associate professors at the EPFL Institute of Architecture within the 'MANSLAB, Laboratory of Spatial Manufacturing' chair from 2013 to 2025.
\r\n
\r\nHe also served on the Arts and Architecture Commission of the Canton of Bern and was a member of the editorial board of Werk-Bauen & Wohnen. He chaired the jury for the Swiss Pavilion at the Venice Biennale on behalf of Pro Helvetia. Marco Bakker also regularly participates in various photographic and editorial projects related to art and architecture.
\r\n ",
