            "description": "<strong>Abstract: </strong>The need to understand and predict material and structural failure has led to the development of several theoretical frameworks, including plasticity, limit analysis, damage mechanics, and cohesive fracture models. <br>\r\n<br>\r\nI first review how these rate-independent theories can be formulated as energy minimisation problems and discuss their main properties and limitations. I then introduce a regularised fracture model, akin to the phase-field regularisation used for softening plasticity, that we recently proposed in [1]. Unlike standard gradient damage or phase-field fracture models, in this approach damage affects the material strength rather than its stiffness.<br>\r\n<br>\r\nThrough analytical and numerical examples, I show how this model, within a consistent variational framework, provides a path toward reconciling several key concepts developed over the centuries, including Griffith and cohesive crack models, damage mechanics, plasticity, strength criteria, and limit analysis.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n[1] B.             "description": "<strong>Aim:</strong> Fields that manipulate matter (chemistry, materials science, biology) face a persistent gap between computational models and the lab bench. Conventional simulation emphasizes idealized systems: perfect crystal structures, static snapshots, vacuum environments. Yet the functional properties of foundational technologies (catalysts, semiconductors, drugs, batteries) are governed by precisely the features these methods cannot capture: defects, interfaces, disorder, and dynamics operating across multiple length and time scales. This RFP asks whether AI can now close that gap by predicting such phenomena more accurately, or across multiple length or time scales.<br>\r\n<br>\r\nThis RFP is for you if:\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>You are developing AI methods to predict non-idealities (defects, interfaces, disorder, dynamics) and/or multi-scale phenomena in technologically relevant materials or molecules</li>\r\n\t<li>You have a specific materials or molecular system in mind where conventional simulation underperforms</li>\r\n</ul>\r\n<br>\r\n<strong>Funding &amp; Duration:      </strong>Track 1 - Up to $100K for 6-12 months<br>\r\n                                            Track 2 - Up to $500K for 12-18 months<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<strong>Eligibility:</strong> Schmidt sciences invites individual researchers, research teams, research institutions, and multi-institution collaborations across universities, national laboratories, institutes, and non-profit research organizations.             "description": "<p>This presentation treats space and mobility as inseparable, where space is produced through movement, coordination, and pause, while mobility is always spatially formatted by routes, nodes, and boundaries. Their intersection is therefore not an overlap but a relational field in which placement and movement continuously reify one another. This perspective invites complex mixed methods approaches based on methodological mapping across different forms of evidence, which can show how movements cluster or stretch, while narrative interviews, participatory mapping, and field observation can uncover how actors interpret routes, obstacles, and anchors in everyday life. The aim is not merely conventional triangulation, but conceptual integration: Using different methods to move between patterns in systems and interpretation of experience. Mixed methods research can theorize space-mobility while also exploring how they are experienced, governed, and contested.<br>\r\n <br>\r\nManfred Max Bergman is Chair of Social Research and Methodology at the University of Basel and Director of the Social Transitions Research Group. He works on methodological innovations to the study of sustainability transitions, inequality, health, corporate responsibility, and social change, with particular expertise in mixed methods research and case study design. He has contributed to scholarship on mobility, inequality, and public space through international comparative and interdisciplinary projects, and previously served as Editor in Chief of the Journal of Mixed Methods Research. His current international engagements include service on the Swiss National Science Foundation’s Indo-Swiss Joint Scientific Board, collaboration with ICSSR in India on an innovative research methods training programme, and a visiting professorship at NUS in Singapore focused on implementation science and transdisciplinary research.</p>",

            "description": "<strong>Aim: </strong>The program provides funding for today’s brightest minds to apply their talent and expertise to<strong> a new field in mathematics or the natural sciences</strong>. Pivot Fellows receive support for one year of mentored training in their new discipline, followed by the opportunity to apply for up to five years of research funding in their new field. Successful applicants will have a strong track record of success and achievement in their current field and a deep interest, curiosity and drive to contribute to a new discipline.  The program is open to faculty in the natural sciences, mathematics, engineering, data science and computer science at academic institutions or equivalent positions elsewhere.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<strong>Duration:</strong> 12 months<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<strong>Funding</strong>: Salary support for the fellow + $10K for fellow’s research/travel + $50K for mentor’s research        <br>\r\n<br>\r\n<strong>Eligibility: </strong>Fellows and mentors must hold a Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent degree in the natural sciences (astronomy, biology, chemistry, earth sciences, neuroscience and physics), engineering, mathematics, data science or computer science — and all subdisciplines therein — and be faculty at an academic institution or hold an equivalent position. Fellows must demonstrate that the fellowship will take place in a new discipline, distinct from their current field of study. In order to receive the fellowship, fellows must be approved by their institution for a full year of leave. Fellows must not hold any other fellowship that will provide them with salary support during the training year of the Pivot Fellowship.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<strong>How to Apply</strong>: Applicants must apply through Simons Award Manager (<a href=\"https://sam.simonsfoundation.org/\">SAM</a>).
