Likewise, in a ferroic material, regions with different orientation of the order parameter, the domains, do not simply exist side by side, but they exhibit new phases and properties in the domain walls. Because of their discontinuous, confined, and topological nature, domain walls exhibit functional states that are not possible in the bulk. Continuing this line of thought, one should expect domain walls in multiferroics to be a particularly rich source of novel phenomena. Here one must distinguish between (i) \"domain walls in multiferroics\", where only the ferroelectric (or magnetic) order is considered so that little is learned about the multiferroic state, and (ii) \"multiferroic domain walls\" where the ferroic phase coexistence of the wall itself is of interest. The latter are rarely studied, and I will discuss some of their intriguing features in my talk.<br>\r\n<br>\r\nBio: Professor Manfred Fiebig is known for his work in light-matter interaction in systems with strong electronic correlations. (Multi-) ferroics are of particular interest to him. After obtaining his doctoral degree in physics at the University of Dortmund, he worked at the University of Tokyo, the Max Born Institut Berlin, and the University of Bonn before he was appointed as Professor of Multifunctional Ferroic Materials in the Department of Materials at ETH Zurich in 2011. In 2021 he also became a member of the National Research Council of the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), and he was elected as Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences and Literature | Mainz. Most recent distinctions include the 2022 APS Frank Isakson Prize for Optical Effects in Solids as well as the of the Stern Gerlach Medal in 2023, the highest distinction in Experimental Physics of the German Physical Society. He is one of the founders of the ETH Spinoff Company “3Wave Instruments”.</p>", "image_description": "", "creation_date": "2026-02-12T08:41:37", "last_modification_date": "2026-03-09T10:58:25", "link_label": "Website", "link_url": "https://mat.ethz.ch/department/people/person-detail.fiebig.html", "canceled": "False", "cancel_reason": "", "place_and_room": "MXF 1", "url_place_and_room": "https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==MXF%201", "url_online_room": "", "spoken_languages": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=api" ], "speaker": "Prof. Manfred Fiebig, ETHZ", "organizer": "Prof. Gregor Jotzu, Prof. Fabien Sorin & Prof. Esther Amstad", "contact": "Prof. Gregor Jotzu, Prof. Fabien Sorin & Prof. Esther Amstad", "is_internal": "False", "theme": "", "vulgarization": { "id": 1, "fr_label": "Tout public", "en_label": "General public" }, "registration": { "id": 3, "fr_label": "Entrée libre", "en_label": "Free" }, "keywords": "", "file": null, "icalendar_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/119701/", "category": { "id": 1, "code": "CONF", "fr_label": "Conférences - Séminaires", "en_label": "Conferences - Seminars", "activated": true }, "academic_calendar_category": null, "domains": [], "mementos": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/8/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/314/?format=api" ] }, { "id": 70824, "title": "MoRAT: Mathematics of Randomized linear Algebra Techniques - Summer School 2026", "slug": "morat-mathematics-of-randomized-linear-algebra-t-2", "event_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/morat-mathematics-of-randomized-linear-algebra-t-2", "visual_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32231/200x112.jpg", "visual_large_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32231/720x405.jpg", "visual_maxsize_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32231/max-size.jpg", "lang": "en", "start_date": "2026-08-31", "end_date": "2026-09-04", "start_time": "10:00:00", "end_time": "12:00:00", "description": "<p>This summer school, organized by seven PhD students from EPFL and ETH Zurich, brings together leading researchers and postgraduate students. In this context, this talk will focus on recent research advances on biomass and CO2 conversion to sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), chemicals and bio-based materials. Considering the challenges associated with low-carbon resources, including dispersed distribution, significant fluctuations in raw material composition, and high conversion costs, a distributed-centralized system utilizing alcohols as key platform molecules has been proposed. Alcohol synthesis from biomass and CO2 will be presented with the focus on catalysis for methanol (thermocatalysis) and ethanol synthesis (electrocatalysis) from CO2. Conversion of alcohol to SAF will be introduced with discussions on the design of multifunctional catalysts for alcohol conversion, the dynamic evolution of catalytic sites, and the strategies for tuning product distributions. Additionally, a few examples of biobased materials, such as cellulose nanofiber-based biomaterials and bio-based nylon precursor and polyester precursor, will be presented.<br>\r\n<br>\r\nBio: Dr. Zhenglong Li is the “Qiushi” Chair Professor of Zhejiang University. His research is dedicated to the high-value utilization of biomass and carbon dioxide to synthesize sustainable aviation fuel, chemicals, and bio-based materials. He was the team lead in the biomass conversion area at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (United States) prior to joining Zhejiang University. He was the committee member for the Chemical Catalysis for Bioenergy Consortium under the United States Department of Energy (DOE). His group focus on in-depth understanding of the catalytic processes of biomass and carbon dioxide at the molecular level to guide catalyst design, process development, and industrial application, especially R&D of SAF, bio-based chemicals, key bio-based polymer building blocks. His research group has published many high-impact scientific papers in top journals such as <em>J. Am. Chem. Soc., Nat. Commun., Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A., ACS Catal., Appl. Catal. Another focus is the effect of monomer structure on resulting polymer properties and performance, and how post-polymerization modification strategies can be employed to tailor materials for specific applications. (2) Applications of bio-based polycarbonates will be then discussed in fields such as coatings, biomedical materials, adhesives, and their recycling pathways.
