Solar and wind energy harvesting combined with chemical energy storage in batteries or fuels, such as hydrogen, are essential processes, that need to be improved in terms of efficiency, long-term stability, scalability and sustainability. Although significant progress has been made, many proposed photo- or electrochemical devices show satisfying short-term efficiencies in the laboratory but are too cost-intensive, too unstable and/or not sustainable enough for large-scale applications [1][2]. This is often the case, because they rely on rare materials and/or they are not fabricated using scalable processes. From a material science point of view, key areas to improve dynamic processes include, of course, the bulk properties of the active materials themselves, as well as the interfaces between the active materials and the electrolyte [3].
\r\nIn this contribution concepts are presented how to improve the function of active materials in photo- or electrochemical energy applications by materials and interface design while respecting sustainability criteria. Our strategies include morphology control by scalable synthesis procedures and chemical modifications using earth-abundant and sustainable additives. These approaches are showcased in two application areas: photocatalysis for solar water-splitting and post-lithium-ion batteries. In both cases vanadium-based chemistries and low energy hydrothermal synthesis processes are used to produce devices with improved function [4,5].
\r\n[1] A. Vilanova, P. Dias, T. Lopes and A. Historically, research has primarily focused on predicting the onset of buckling—that is, the loss of the original configuration under excessive loading—rather than on understanding how structures evolve in the post-buckling regime. Recently, however, the study of buckling has experienced a renaissance, with post-buckling mechanical responses increasingly exploited to achieve new functionalities, for example enhancing fracture resistance in stretchable electronics and flexible displays.
\r\n
\r\nWhile most existing studies consider elastically deforming systems whose behaviour arises primarily from geometric nonlinearities, this talk presents examples in which geometric effects are coupled with nonlinear constitutive responses, giving rise to new post-buckling mechanisms. First, we investigate the buckling of hard, perforated (“holey”) structures that exhibit auxetic behaviour but, unlike their purely elastic counterparts, undergo post-buckling softening. The resulting negative stiffness is captured using a pseudo-plastic constitutive model that describes nonlinearities emerging from the structural microarchitecture.
\r\n
\r\nWe then apply a similar framework to examine the buckling of beverage cans largely filled with liquid under axial compression. Whereas empty cylindrical shells typically develop periodic buckling patterns that break both axial and circumferential symmetry, liquid-filled cylinders buckle axisymmetrically. The resulting ring-shaped buckles are localized and emerge sequentially, progressively covering the can surface. We show that this behaviour arises from nonlinear, spatially anisotropic hoop stresses that soften and subsequently re-stiffen during compression.
\r\n
\r\nBiography: Draga Pihler-Puzovic is a Reader in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Manchester and a core member of the Manchester Centre for Nonlinear Dynamics. Recent scientific advances have provided an increased understanding of pathogenic mechanisms underlying FTD and are driving the development of potential disease-modifying therapies. The Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation (ADDF) and The Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration (AFTD) seek to accelerate this progress by supporting innovative small molecule and biologic (antibodies, oligonucleotides, peptides, gene therapy etc.) drug development programs for FTD through this request for proposals (RFP).
\r\n
\r\nThe funding priorities for this RFP are:\r\n
\r\n\t
Lead optimization of novel disease-modifying compounds, including medicinal chemistry refinement and in vitro ADME.
\r\n\t
In vivo testing of novel lead compounds, biologics, vaccines, or repurposed drug candidates in relevant animal models for pharmacokinetics, dose-range finding, target engagement, in vivo efficacy, and/or preliminary rodent tolerability studies.
\r\n
\r\n
\r\nFunding: up to $300,000 based on stage and scope of research
\r\n
\r\nDuration: 1 year, with potential for follow-up funding
\r\n
\r\nEligibility: Funding is open to researchers and clinicians worldwide at academic medical centers and universities or nonprofits. Industry partnerships are encouraged.
\r\n
\r\nHow to Apply: Applications are reviewed in a two-step process: Letters of Intent (LOI) are the first step, and are submitted through the ADDF Funding Portal. ADDF’s science team will evaluate LOIs to determine whether the proposed project is consistent with the ADDF's mission and funding priorities. LOI decisions will be sent within three weeks of submission. Step 2 is an invited full proposal, which should include a detailed project narrative, budget and justification, and biographical information. When formulating the budget, note that the following costs are not covered: Indirect costs/Overhead, Publication costs, Equipment, and Travel. However, whether this oncogenic process, particularly observed in the intestine, can be initiated by a specific immune cell population remains unknown. We recently identified two distinct effector T cell populations capable to initiate the oncogenic transformation of a healthy intestinal epithelium (Fesneau et al., Nat Immunol. 2024; Brewer et al., Nat. Rev. Canc. 2024), as well as the factors controlling their differentiation. By revealing the presence of tumorigenic T cells, this work opens a new field in oncology and immunology that will be key for both our understanding of the early steps of carcinogenesis and the development of prophylactic therapies against cancer.
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
", "image_description": "Prof. Julien Marie", "creation_date": "2026-03-06T11:49:19", "last_modification_date": "2026-03-11T09:53:47", "link_label": "", "link_url": "", "canceled": "False", "cancel_reason": "", "place_and_room": "SV 1717", "url_place_and_room": "https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==SV%201717", "url_online_room": "https://epfl.zoom.us/j/65172501275", "spoken_languages": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=api" ], "speaker": "Prof. Julien MARIE, CRCL : Cancer Research Center of Lyon ", "organizer": "Prof. Daniel Constam", "contact": "Prof. Daniel Constam", "is_internal": "True", "theme": "", "vulgarization": { "id": 2, "fr_label": "Public averti", "en_label": "Informed public" }, "registration": { "id": 3, "fr_label": "Entrée libre", "en_label": "Free" }, "keywords": "", "file": null, "icalendar_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/119997/", "category": { "id": 1, "code": "CONF", "fr_label": "Conférences - Séminaires", "en_label": "Conferences - Seminars", "activated": true }, "academic_calendar_category": null, "domains": [], "mementos": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/9/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=api" ] } ] }
