Obtaining such guarantees is often difficult and both time consuming and error-prone. Starting with the work of Drori and Teboulle (2014), novel techniques have been used to gain numerical insights, leading to the release of various performance estimation (PE) software.
\r\n
\r\nIn this talk, I will show how various computer-aided techniques can be used to study first-order optimization methods in a systematic way. From performance estimation problems with automated Lyapunov discovery, to symbolic regression and computer algebra systems, novel tools completely reshape the way we approach theory of optimization.
\r\nAs a main example, I will focus on error feedback methods used with compressed communication in distributed optimization. While error feedback has been widely studied, existing theory often provides untight (thus unreliable) bounds. I will present tight analyses with matching lower bounds that allow a fair comparison between error feedback schemes and standard compressed gradient descent, and help explain when error feedback is useful and when it is not.
\r\n
\r\nOverall, the talk aims to show how various computer-aided proofs can lead to clearer and more reliable insights into first-order optimization methods.
\r\n
\r\nBased on :
\r\nA Tight Theory of Error Feedback Algorithms in Distributed Optimization, DB Thomsen, A Taylor, A Dieuleveut
\r\nInternational Conference on Machine Learning (ICML 2026)
\r\nTight analyses of first-order methods with error feedback, DB Thomsen, A Taylor, A Dieuleveut
\r\nAdvances in Neural Information Processing Systems (NeurIPS) (2025).
\r\nPEPit: computer-assisted worst-case analyses of first-order optimization methods in Python
\r\nB Goujaud, C Moucer, F Glineur, JM Hendrickx, AB Taylor, A Dieuleveut
\r\nMathematical Programming Computation 16 (3), 337-367 (2024)
\r\n(eventually - as a detour) Provable non-accelerations of the heavy-ball method B Goujaud, A Taylor, A Dieuleveut, Mathematical Programming, 1-59 (2025)
\r\n
", "image_description": "", "creation_date": "2026-05-19T09:20:45", "last_modification_date": "2026-05-19T09:22:37", "link_label": "", "link_url": "https://www.epfl.ch/schools/sb/research/math/research/statistics/", "canceled": "False", "cancel_reason": "", "place_and_room": "CM 1 517", "url_place_and_room": "https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==CM%201%20517", "url_online_room": "", "spoken_languages": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=api" ], "speaker": "Aymeric Dieuleveut, Ecole Polytechnique, Institut Polytechnique de Paris", "organizer": "Myrto Limnios ", "contact": "Maroussia Schaffner", "is_internal": "False", "theme": "", "vulgarization": { "id": 2, "fr_label": "Public averti", "en_label": "Informed public" }, "registration": { "id": 3, "fr_label": "Entrée libre", "en_label": "Free" }, "keywords": "", "file": null, "icalendar_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/120800/", "category": { "id": 1, "code": "CONF", "fr_label": "Conférences - Séminaires", "en_label": "Conferences - Seminars", "activated": true }, "academic_calendar_category": null, "domains": [], "mementos": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/5/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/7/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/288/?format=api" ] }, { "id": 71900, "title": "U.S. CDMRP – Breast Cancer Research Program | Research Funding", "slug": "us-cdmrp-breast-cancer-research-program-research-5", "event_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/us-cdmrp-breast-cancer-research-program-research-5", "visual_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33218/200x112.jpg", "visual_large_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33218/720x405.jpg", "visual_maxsize_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33218/max-size.jpg", "lang": "en", "start_date": "2026-06-12", "end_date": "2026-06-12", "start_time": null, "end_time": null, "description": "Aim: Through the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program (CDMRP), the Department of Defense is announcing the 2026 Breast Cancer Research Program (BCRP) Awards. Several award programs are available:\r\n
\r\n\t
The Breakthrough Awards supports promising research that has high potential to lead to or make breakthroughs in breast cancer. The Breakthrough Award is structured with four different funding levels. Each level has a defined research scope :\r\n\t
\r\n\t\t
Funding Level 1: Innovative, high-risk/high-reward research that is in the earliest stages of idea development or is an untested theory that addresses an important problem.
\r\n\t\t
Funding Level 2: Research that is already supported by substantial preliminary or published data and strongly validates clinical translation in a well-defined context within the breast cancer landscape.
\r\n\t\t
Funding Level 3: Advanced translational studies with a high degree of project readiness.
\r\n\t\t
Funding Level 4: Large-scale projects that will transform and revolutionize the clinical management and/or prevention of breast cancer. Human clinical trials are required.
\r\n\t
\r\n\t
\r\n\t
The Clinical Research Extension Award aims to extend the data collection, follow-up, and analysis of breast cancer clinical research studies. Proposed research may entail a deeper molecular analysis of clinical samples, initiation of new correlative studies, biomarker validation, or continuing clinical follow-up of patients currently/previously enrolled in an open/ongoing or completed clinical trial.
\r\n\t
The Era of Hope Scholar Award supports individuals early in their careers who have demonstrated significant potential to effect meaningful change in breast cancer. These individuals should be exceptionally talented scientists who have shown that they are the “best and brightest” in their field(s)
\r\n\t
The Transformative Breast Cancer Consortium Award is designed to support large-scale, multidisciplinary and multi-institutional consortia that address major challenges in breast cancer through tightly integrated and collaborative research efforts. It enables up to five Principal Investigators, including a Consortium Director, to work within a coordinated framework where all project components are aligned toward a shared central hypothesis. The award specifically aims to foster innovative and paradigm-shifting approaches that go beyond the capabilities of individual laboratories, requiring strong integration across scientific, administrative, and logistical aspects, as well as the active involvement of breast cancer advocates and cross-disciplinary expertise.
\r\n\t
The Transformative Breast Cancer Consortium Development Award is intended to provide successful applicants the time and resources needed to bring investigators and breast cancer advocates together to establish a consortium framework and conduct preliminary research to support application to a future, full Transformative Breast Cancer Consortium Award (pending availability of funds). This is a development award and is a separate mechanism from the full consortium award. Recipients of the FY26 Transformative Breast Cancer Consortium Development Award are expected to submit an application to compete for the full Transformative Breast Cancer Consortium Award anticipated to be offered in a future fiscal year(s).
\r\n
\r\n
\r\nAll applications must align with at least one BCRP Overarching Challenge. The study of these systems has proven extraordinarily fruitful for biotechnology: CRISPR-Cas9, originally discovered as a bacterial defense mechanism, has revolutionized genome editing and demonstrated the transformative potential of mining bacterial immunity for molecular tools.
\r\nYet the diversity of bacterial defense extends far beyond CRISPR. Bacteria have evolved numerous strategies to recognize and destroy foreign DNA, many of which remain poorly understood at the mechanistic level. A central question is how these systems distinguish self from non-self — and how the underlying molecular logic of DNA targeting is encoded in protein structure and biochemistry. We combine cryo-electron microscopy, quantitative biochemistry, and in vivo genomics to characterize newly discovered defense systems and dissect their targeting mechanisms. This work is revealing unexpected principles of foreign DNA recognition, with implications both for our understanding of bacterial immunity and for the development of next-generation biotechnological tools for genome editing and beyond.
", "image_description": "Bravo", "creation_date": "2026-05-18T10:59:28", "last_modification_date": "2026-05-18T10:59:28", "link_label": "", "link_url": "", "canceled": "False", "cancel_reason": "", "place_and_room": "SV 1717", "url_place_and_room": "https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==SV%201717", "url_online_room": "", "spoken_languages": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=api" ], "speaker": "Jack Bravo, Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA)", "organizer": "Melanie Blokesch", "contact": "[email protected]", "is_internal": "False", "theme": "", "vulgarization": { "id": 2, "fr_label": "Public averti", "en_label": "Informed public" }, "registration": { "id": 3, "fr_label": "Entrée libre", "en_label": "Free" }, "keywords": "", "file": null, "icalendar_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/120785/", "category": { "id": 1, "code": "CONF", "fr_label": "Conférences - Séminaires", "en_label": "Conferences - Seminars", "activated": true }, "academic_calendar_category": null, "domains": [], "mementos": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/5/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/8/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/9/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/53/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/27/?format=api" ] }, { "id": 71891, "title": "Kilian's Protocol and Beyond: On Constructions and Limitations of Succinct Arguments", "slug": "kilian-s-protocol-and-beyond-on-constructions-an-2", "event_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/kilian-s-protocol-and-beyond-on-constructions-an-2", "visual_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33209/200x112.jpg", "visual_large_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33209/720x405.jpg", "visual_maxsize_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33209/max-size.jpg", "lang": "en", "start_date": "2026-06-03", "end_date": "2026-06-03", "start_time": "17:00:00", "end_time": null, "description": "
Thesis Directors: Prof. A.
