Conventional simulation emphasizes idealized systems: perfect crystal structures, static snapshots, vacuum environments. Yet the functional properties of foundational technologies (catalysts, semiconductors, drugs, batteries) are governed by precisely the features these methods cannot capture: defects, interfaces, disorder, and dynamics operating across multiple length and time scales. This RFP asks whether AI can now close that gap by predicting such phenomena more accurately, or across multiple length or time scales.
\r\n
\r\nThis RFP is for you if:\r\n
\r\n\t
You are developing AI methods to predict non-idealities (defects, interfaces, disorder, dynamics) and/or multi-scale phenomena in technologically relevant materials or molecules
\r\n\t
You have a specific materials or molecular system in mind where conventional simulation underperforms
\r\n
\r\n
\r\nFunding & Duration: Track 1 - Up to $100K for 6-12 months
\r\n Track 2 - Up to $500K for 12-18 months
\r\n
\r\nEligibility: Schmidt sciences invites individual researchers, research teams, research institutions, and multi-institution collaborations across universities, national laboratories, institutes, and non-profit research organizations. In the first part of this talk we focus on steady solutions, showing that in the low-regularity regime their streamlines can realize any prescribed topology, a phenomenon that cannot occur for classical solutions. The key tool is a novel implementation of convex integration that preserves the topology of the streamlines throughout the iteration. In the second part we extend these ideas to the MHD equations, constructing continuous weak solutions with constant nonzero helicity that nevertheless fail to conserve energy and cross helicity.
", "image_description": "", "creation_date": "2026-03-25T09:22:27", "last_modification_date": "2026-03-25T09:22:27", "link_label": "", "link_url": "", "canceled": "False", "cancel_reason": "", "place_and_room": "MA B1 11", "url_place_and_room": "https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==MA%20B1%2011", "url_online_room": "", "spoken_languages": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=api" ], "speaker": "Dr. Javier Peñafiel-Tomás (ICMAT)", "organizer": "Prof. Maria Colombo", "contact": "Prof. Maria Colombo", "is_internal": "False", "theme": "", "vulgarization": { "id": 1, "fr_label": "Tout public", "en_label": "General public" }, "registration": { "id": 3, "fr_label": "Entrée libre", "en_label": "Free" }, "keywords": "", "file": null, "icalendar_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/120178/", "category": { "id": 1, "code": "CONF", "fr_label": "Conférences - Séminaires", "en_label": "Conferences - Seminars", "activated": true }, "academic_calendar_category": null, "domains": [], "mementos": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/7/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/259/?format=api" ] } ] }
