Janelidze, L. Márki and W. Tholen in 2002, generalizes that of abelian category, and captures the homological properties that the categories of groups, associative algebras, Lie algebras and cocommutative Hopf algebras over a field have in common. Internal structures behave surprisingly well in semi-abelian categories. For example, any internal reflexive graph admits at most one internal category structure, and the categories of internal categories and internal groupoids are isomorphic. Moreover, the category of internal groupoids is equivalent to the category of internal crossed modules. The notion of internal crossed module in any semi-abelian category was introduced by G. Janelidze in 2003, and recovers in particular the classical notion of crossed module of groups. The fact that the category of internal groupoids in a semi-abelian category is itself semi-abelian implies that also the category of internal n-fold groupoids is well-behaved.
\r\n
\r\nIn this talk, I will prove that the full subcategory of internal n-groupoids in a semi-abelian category is a Birkhoff subcategory of the category of internal n-fold groupoids, and provide a simple description of the corresponding reflection for n=2. In the abelian context, the internal n-groupoids yield a torsion-free subcategory of the category of internal n-fold groupoids, and it is possible to characterize (higher) central extensions and compute generalized Hopf formulae for homology.
\r\n
\r\nPart of this talk is based on joint work with Marino Gran
\r\n
", "image_description": "", "creation_date": "2026-03-25T12:18:18", "last_modification_date": "2026-03-25T12:25:27", "link_label": "", "link_url": "", "canceled": "False", "cancel_reason": "", "place_and_room": "MA B1 504", "url_place_and_room": "https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==MA%20B1%20504", "url_online_room": "", "spoken_languages": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=api" ], "speaker": "Nadja Egner, UC Louvain", "organizer": "Markus Kirolos", "contact": "Maroussia Schaffner", "is_internal": "False", "theme": "", "vulgarization": { "id": 2, "fr_label": "Public averti", "en_label": "Informed public" }, "registration": { "id": 3, "fr_label": "Entrée libre", "en_label": "Free" }, "keywords": "", "file": null, "icalendar_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/120179/", "category": { "id": 1, "code": "CONF", "fr_label": "Conférences - Séminaires", "en_label": "Conferences - Seminars", "activated": true }, "academic_calendar_category": null, "domains": [], "mementos": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/5/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/9/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/7/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=api" ] }, { "id": 70945, "title": "Une éducation au réel. Rice paddy soils are rich in organic carbon, and the conventional understanding has been that organic carbon enhances microbial arsenic methylation by fueling microbial activity. This presentation will describe a series of recent investigations — spanning pure culture to greenhouse-scale experiments — that challenge this conceptual model. First, the presentation will describe the role of carbon catabolite repression (CCR) in regulating cellular uptake and subsequent enzymatic methylation of arsenite. A combination of biosensor, gene expression, and arsenic speciation analyses demonstrate that sugars lead to CCR and a decrease in arsenic methylation, while low molecular weight organic acids do not impact arsenite uptake. The presentation will then examine couplings between methanogenesis and arsenic demethylation, wherein a greater abundance of methylotrophic carbon substrates (methanol, methylamines) promote arsenic demethylation by methanogens and limit the accumulation of methylated arsenic compounds. A genome-resolved metatranscriptomic analysis of anaerobic soil slurry experiments resolved links between methylotrophic substrate utilization and arsenic demethylation, while greenhouse experiments showed that higher levels of methanogenesis in soils were associated with lower concentrations of methylated arsenic in rice grains. Taken together, these results provide a more nuanced understanding of how utilization of distinct carbon substrates impacts arsenic methylation-demethylation dynamics, and provides mechanistic insights into how paddy soil management practices influence arsenic speciation in rice.
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
\r\nBiography:\r\n\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
Dr. Matthew Reid is an associate professor in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Cornell University and directs the Biogeochemistry and Ecosystem Engineering Research Group. After a fixed number of steps, the left tail has a Gaussian profile under minimal assumptions. Remarkably, a similar phenomenon occurs when we consider a positive random walk on the cone of positive-semidefinite matrices. After a fixed number of steps, the minimum eigenvalue is described by a Gaussian random matrix model.
\r\nThis talk introduces a new way to make this intuition rigorous. The methodology addresses an open problem in computational mathematics about sparse random embeddings. The presentation targets a general mathematical audience.
\r\nPreprint: https://arxiv.org/abs/2501.16578
\r\n
\r\nPlease register on the following form : https://forms.gle/ppXwKo9HmTgFk3rc7", "image_description": "", "creation_date": "2026-04-01T11:03:30", "last_modification_date": "2026-04-01T11:03:45", "link_label": "", "link_url": "", "canceled": "False", "cancel_reason": "", "place_and_room": "BCH 2201", "url_place_and_room": "https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==BCH%202201", "url_online_room": "", "spoken_languages": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=api" ], "speaker": "Prof. Joel A. However, whether this oncogenic process, particularly observed in the intestine, can be initiated by a specific immune cell population remains unknown. We recently identified two distinct effector T cell populations capable to initiate the oncogenic transformation of a healthy intestinal epithelium (Fesneau et al., Nat Immunol. 2024; Brewer et al., Nat. Rev. Canc. 2024), as well as the factors controlling their differentiation. By revealing the presence of tumorigenic T cells, this work opens a new field in oncology and immunology that will be key for both our understanding of the early steps of carcinogenesis and the development of prophylactic therapies against cancer.
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
", "image_description": "Prof. Julien Marie", "creation_date": "2026-03-06T11:49:19", "last_modification_date": "2026-03-11T09:53:47", "link_label": "", "link_url": "", "canceled": "False", "cancel_reason": "", "place_and_room": "SV 1717", "url_place_and_room": "https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==SV%201717", "url_online_room": "https://epfl.zoom.us/j/65172501275", "spoken_languages": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=api" ], "speaker": "Prof. Julien MARIE, CRCL : Cancer Research Center of Lyon ", "organizer": "Prof. Daniel Constam", "contact": "Prof. Daniel Constam", "is_internal": "True", "theme": "", "vulgarization": { "id": 2, "fr_label": "Public averti", "en_label": "Informed public" }, "registration": { "id": 3, "fr_label": "Entrée libre", "en_label": "Free" }, "keywords": "", "file": null, "icalendar_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/119997/", "category": { "id": 1, "code": "CONF", "fr_label": "Conférences - Séminaires", "en_label": "Conferences - Seminars", "activated": true }, "academic_calendar_category": null, "domains": [], "mementos": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/9/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=api" ] } ] }
