            "description": "<p>Many plasticity rules rely on adjusting the strength of synapses between pairs of cells based on their coincident activity. We uncovered a new mechanism for coincidence detection in the Drosophila head direction network. To maintain an accurate sense of direction, head direction neurons that signal orientation during navigation must learn to anchor to relevant external sensory cues in novel environments. Yet the synaptic mechanism for this form of unsupervised learning is unknown in any organism. In Drosophila, GABAergic visual inputs converge onto head direction neurons, and these inhibitory synapses change strength with experience to learn the relationship between visual landmarks and head direction. However, how coincident pre- and postsynaptic activity is detected across this inhibitory synapse is not understood. We discovered that neurons which release the monoamine octopamine close a feedback loop that conveys postsynaptic head direction activity onto presynaptic terminals of visual inputs. This octopamine pathway is required for anchoring the head direction network to visual cues. Furthermore, pairing structured activation of octopamine neurons with a visual cue is sufficient to drive rapid plasticity, even without postsynaptic head direction cell activity. Previous work has extensively characterized coincidence detection mechanisms at excitatory synapses; our work defines a novel mechanism for coincidence detection at an inhibitory synapse, in which postsynaptic activity is relayed via a neuromodulatory neuron onto presynaptic terminals.<br>\r\n </p>",

            "description": "<p>Abstract<br>\r\nAround 30% of cancers are preceded by chronic inflammation which occurs at the site where tumors will develop. However, whether this oncogenic process, particularly observed in the intestine, can be initiated by a specific immune cell population remains unknown. We recently identified two distinct effector T cell populations capable to initiate the oncogenic transformation of a healthy intestinal epithelium (Fesneau et al., Nat Immunol. 2024; Brewer et al., Nat. Rev. Canc. 2024), as well as the factors controlling their differentiation. By revealing the presence of tumorigenic T cells, this work opens a new field in oncology and immunology that will be key for both our understanding of the early steps of carcinogenesis and the development of prophylactic therapies against cancer.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<br>\r\n </p>",

            "description": "<p>Hosted by <a href=\"https://cibm.ch/community/frederic-grouiller/\">Frédéric Grouiller</a>, CIBM MRI HUG-UNIGE Section head, we are pleased  to invite you to attend the CIBM 7T MRI Seminar on April 21st at 10:00 CEST by Caroline Le Ster from the CEA Neurospin, Paris who will be sharing on<strong> “Leveraging the potential of UHF scanners for fMRI studies”.<br>\r\nAbstract</strong><br>\r\nThere is a growing availability of 7T scanners, with approximately 100 systems currently installed worldwide. These ultra-high-filed (UHF) scanners are particularly relevant for neuroimaging, where anatomical and functional images can be acquired with higher spatial and temporal resolution than on conventional scanners. However, UHF scanners remain difficult to operate, and understanding their specific limitations is essential. These systems indeed face several challenges arising from MR physics and biological effects that must be addressed within engineering constraints. Leverage the potential of UHF scanners, for instance through field monitoring, is therefore important to make the most of these scanners and benefit from the intrinsic SNR gain.<br>\r\nfMRI particularly benefits from the increase in magnetic field strength, enabling studies to be performed at higher resolution than at lower fields. In order to maintain reasonable acquisition times despite larger imaging matrices, several acceleration strategies have been developed, e.g. multi-slice EPI (SMS-EPI), three-dimensional EPI (3D-EPI) and non-Cartesian sampling schemes. In addition, functional contrasts also benefit from the field increase, including improved spatial localization of the BOLD contrast and the possibility to exploit VASO contrast.</p>",

            "description": "<br>\r\n<br>\r\nCellular cryo electron tomography is experiencing spectacular developments, revealing with increasing resolution and complexity the structures and interactions of macromolecules at work in living matter. To obtain thin samples from biological tissue and cells in their flash-frozen native state, cryo-FIB milling is nowadays the most popular method, with impressive successes. The alternative, cryo-ultramicrotomy - also known as CEMOVIS - has been overshadowed because of (i) technical difficulties associated to cryo-section generation and collection - in particular the lack of control over adhesion; and (ii) crevasses and compression artefacts.<br>\r\nI will present recent developments with optimization of the experimental workflow, focusing on section adhesion and their support grids. These result in high throughput data acquisition, with typically several tens to hundreds of cryo-tomograms per sample. Revisiting cutting artefacts shows that crevasses alter but 10 % of the sample volume. Compression is heterogeneous, with scale and material-dependent effects. This is altogether a drawback – with no simple computational correction – and an advantage for projects dedicated to non-(or little)-affected objects such as nucleosomes and chromatin.<br>\r\nAltogether, it is time to revive CEMOVIS as a practical alternative to cryo-FIB milling, offering specific advantages: (i) imaging of large areas of any type of sample, from cells to tissues, organs or even entire organisms – and more generally all kinds of hydrated molecular systems ; (ii) the possibility of serial section approaches ; (iii) no beam damage ; and (iv) a specimen thickness that can be tuned down to 30-50 nm, which may be an advantage for high resolution imaging of small molecular complexes.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<strong>Biography</strong><br>\r\n<br>\r\nAmélie Leforestier is a CNRS research director at the Solid-State Physics Laboratory (LPS, Paris-Saclay, France). After a PhD in Life Sciences on liquid crystalline self-assembly of DNA, she learned cryo electron microscopy during her post-doctoral studies in the group of Jacques Dubochet in Lausanne. Back in France, she set up a cryo-EM facility for soft matter physics at LPS. She is part of an <a href=\"https://equipes.lps.u-psud.fr/sobio/\">interdisciplinary team</a> dedicated to self-assembly processes at work in living systems at the molecular level. Her work, combining concepts from soft matter physics (poly-electrolytes, liquid crystals, frustration) and structural biology, focuses on the geometry and interactions in condensed states of DNA and chromosomes <em>in vitro</em> and <em>in situ</em>.",

            "description": "<p>Who develops, finances, and commissions architecture—and in whose interest? This lecture series examines the often-invisible forces that shape architectural production—the clients who commission, the contractors who build, and the capital flows that determine what gets realized. While architects are trained to focus on design, the political economy of construction is largely absent from architectural education—sustaining a disciplinary insularity that obscures architecture's deep entanglement with capital, labor, and power. Yet building is fundamentally contingent: dependent on forces beyond the designer's reach, shaped by actors whose decisions constrain and enable architecture far more than design intentions. The series invites scholars and practitioners whose research illuminates these dependencies: the bureaucratization of architectural practice through corporate management systems, the client as a Mephistophelean figure key to the attainment of projects, the contractor as a decisive agent in determining how architecture is produced, and the entanglement of real estate development, finance, building, and urban form. By exposing the structural conditions of construction's political economy, we seek not to lament architecture's lack of autonomy but to work productively within its contingencies—essential groundwork for reimagining how practice might be organized otherwise.<br>\r\n<br>\r\nDavide Spina (University of Hong Kong, online) Spina's award-winning dissertation examined the Vatican-controlled real estate developer and contractor SGI (Società Generale Immobiliare), which emerged as a major force in postwar Italy's reconstruction. His research on what journalist Antonio Cederna called \"the Leviathan\" reveals how SGI coordinated 10,000 employees, bureaucratized architectural production, exploited planning regulations, and delivered schemes from residential developments to industrial infrastructure. Currently working on real estate development in 1960s-70s Hong Kong, Spina examines how developers and contractors shape architectural culture through corporate management systems.<br>\r\n </p>",
