Alongside a 'plurality of time', we are interested in the 'plurality of space'. Rather than transparency, it is the arrangement of different worlds face-to-face or side-by-side that creates this impression of density and richness in relationships.
\r\n
\r\nTo craft sustainable development, we believe that, alongside a body of fundamental knowledge, a spirit can be cultivated through tireless attempts, including failure, to develop a 'knowledge of the hand' capable of finding new forms of expression. The countless experiences that we have accumulated at MANSLAB over the past 15 years can undoubtedly be best recounted in the form of anecdotes. An anecdote is a historical detail or a characteristic of customs or character that becomes a short, entertaining story evoking emotions such as laughter or horror.
\r\n
\r\nThe students’ work that I am about to present illustrates certain tested, refined and proven principles, such as the indestructible link between ideas and the hand through the slow and joyful acquisition of knowledge; the economy of means to highlight the essential; errors and non-linearity as inspiring methods in the design process; and the cultivation of empirical, manual and physical knowledge that prioritises grasping sensory, supra-sensory and memory-based reality and is capable of creating new spaces. The launch of the book ANEKDOTA will take place at the same event.
\r\n
\r\nAbout the speaker:
\r\nMarco Bakker is born in Harlingen, Netherlands, in 1960. Their stability and eventual breakdown influence wake dynamics, mixing processes, and overall flow performance. This seminar presents two recent studies exploring vortex stability and vortex breakdown.
\r\nPart I – Short-wave instability of a helical vortex
\r\nThe first part of the seminar discusses the short-wave instability of a helical vortex generated by a rotating blade. Combining experimental dye visualisations, numerical simulations, and theoretical analysis, the study identifies displacement perturbations whose wavelengths are small relative to the helix radius and pitch but may remain large compared with the vortex core size. Stability analysis based on experimentally measured vortex profiles reveals broad bands of unstable wavenumbers for several vortex bending modes. These results differ from predictions of existing theories for short-wave vortex instability. Similar instability modes are also observed in arrays of straight vortices, indicating that the phenomenon is not related to vortex curvature. A theoretical examination of the dispersion relation of Kelvin modes for the measured vortex profiles uncovers a previously unidentified family of modes associated with the specific vorticity distribution. Their non-resonant interaction through the strain field provides a plausible explanation for the experimentally observed instability features.
\r\nPart II – Two-phase wing-tip vortex breakdown
\r\nThe second part presents the discovery of a new flow feature observed in the wake of a rectangular wing in water: the breakdown of the wing-tip vortex triggered by the injection of air into the vortex core downstream of the wing. Experiments show that, for certain combinations of Reynolds number and angle of attack, a stationary air bubble becomes trapped within the vortex core at a finite distance behind the wing and can persist for several minutes even after the air injection is stopped. Under different conditions, the bubble may drift upstream or downstream, or it may disintegrate immediately. Measurements of bubble properties and vortex characteristics reveal that the breakdown behaviour depends primarily on the vortex circulation and on the axial flow component within the core. The formation of a stable breakdown bubble occurs only when a velocity excess relative to the free stream is present.
\r\nThe two studies highlight new mechanisms governing the stability and transformation of vortical flows, offering insight into the dynamics of vortex instabilities and vortex-core modifications in fluid systems.
\r\n
\r\n
\r\nBiography
\r\nThomas Leweke graduated from RWTH Aachen University in Germany in 1990 with a “Diplom” (Master) in Physics. Likewise, in a ferroic material, regions with different orientation of the order parameter, the domains, do not simply exist side by side, but they exhibit new phases and properties in the domain walls. Because of their discontinuous, confined, and topological nature, domain walls exhibit functional states that are not possible in the bulk. Continuing this line of thought, one should expect domain walls in multiferroics to be a particularly rich source of novel phenomena. Here one must distinguish between (i) \"domain walls in multiferroics\", where only the ferroelectric (or magnetic) order is considered so that little is learned about the multiferroic state, and (ii) \"multiferroic domain walls\" where the ferroic phase coexistence of the wall itself is of interest. The latter are rarely studied, and I will discuss some of their intriguing features in my talk.
\r\n
\r\nBio: Professor Manfred Fiebig is known for his work in light-matter interaction in systems with strong electronic correlations. Advancements in surface engineering have enabled significant enhancement of boiling heat transfer. However, performance gains rarely transfer across conditions or geometries. Two challenges illustrate why: bubble nucleation behavior is poorly reproducible; and increasing nucleating density to raise the heat transfer coefficient typically lowers the system’s maximum achievable heat flux. This talk presents our efforts in addressing each challenge by identifying the governing mechanism and designing for it.
\r\nIn the first part, micro-engineered silicon surfaces isolate two governing length scales: the hydrodynamic boundary layer thickness, which controls nucleation stability through inter-site shielding, and the bubble departure diameter, which governs vapor removal after full activation. We experimentally show that nucleation stability responds to the former length scale (~0.24 mm); heat transfer in the activated regime responds to the latter length scale (~2.5 mm).
\r\nThe second study addresses the high-heat-flux limit, where large vapor structures block liquid return. Capillary wicking through copper inverse opals (~10 μm pores) supplies liquid beneath the vapor. Crucially, the pore cavities are themselves the nucleation sites, so wicking capacity and nucleation density derive from the same structure. Further, CuO nanograss on the pore walls suppresses vapor penetration into the porous layer, enabling thicker structures and greater capillary head. The result is simultaneous enhancement of heat transfer coefficients and maximum heat fluxes.
\r\nTogether, the two works show that mechanism-targeted surface design yields gains that empirical topography optimization does not. They point toward a broader design principle: that nucleation and interfacial transport, treated as controllable rather than given, offer a promising path to engineering phase change processes across applications.
\r\n
\r\nhttps://dx.doi.org/10.1021/acsami.9b20520?ref=pdf
\r\nhttps://doi.org/10.1038/s41467-019-10209-w
\r\n
\r\nBio: Zhengmao Lu is a Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at EPFL.
