            "description": "<p>Hosted by Solange Denervaud, CIBM Flagship Project Officer, we are pleased  to invite you to attend the CIBM Visitors Talk on April 24th at 13:00 CEST by Mary Helen Immordino-Yang from the University of Southern California who will be sharing on “Longitudinal neurodevelopmental correlates of mid-adolescents’ psychosocial processing: A path to young adult wellbeing?”.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<strong>Abstract</strong><br>\r\nCombining open-ended interviews (outside the scanner) with structural, trial-by-trial, and resting-state functional MRI neuroimaging, we examined real-time functional neural dynamics underlying diverse urban mid-adolescents’ cognitive and emotional engagement with compelling social stories at two time-points, two years apart. We found that the patterns of longitudinal change in neural network dynamics predicted psychosocial outcomes five years later in young adulthood.<br>\r\nWe found that “transcendent thinking” – seeing situations not just in terms of X happened to person A, which makes me feel thusly, but in terms of the larger societal and contextual forces that shaped how Person A was treated and how Person A reacted, the broader implications and lessons one can draw from that situation, and the larger issues it exemplifies or reveals—correlated with a particular set of neural activity dynamics and predicted future structural and functional neural development across the subsequent two years, controlling for the starting state of neural development, and independent of IQ and SES. Transcendent thinking also countered negative effects of exposure to community violence on structural brain development.<br>\r\nThe neural development predicted by transcendent thinking (the changes in the brain across the 2-year period) in turn predicted young adult identity strength, self-liking, relationship satisfaction, and achievement 5 years later.<br>\r\nThese findings reveal a novel predictor of neural development across mid-adolescence, and underscore the active role adolescents play in their own brain development through the meaning they make of the social world. Implications for secondary education and pedagogy will be discussed.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n </p>",

            "description": "<p>The Holcim Stiftung offers grants to <strong>outstanding</strong> young scientists to carry out excellent research (fundamental, applied, PoC and/or market-oriented) and scientific teaching in <strong>any discipline and field </strong>in<strong> Switzerland</strong> in view of <strong>acquiring a lecturer grade qualification or similar.</strong><br>\r\n<br>\r\nPriority is given to projects:\r\n</p><ul>\r\n\t<li>with a positive social impact,</li>\r\n\t<li>exploring innovative methods, new perspectives or novel lines of questioning crucial to the advancement of science,</li>\r\n</ul>\r\n<strong>Who can apply </strong><em>(all following conditions must be filled)</em>. Dyson Professor of Pediatric Oncology at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, a Professor of Cell Biology at Harvard Medical School, an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and the Associate Director for Basic Science at the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center.  He received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Chicago.  During medical school, he did research at the Rockefeller University.  His postdoctoral fellowship was at the Whitehead Institute/Massachusetts Institute of Technology.<br>\r\n<br>\r\nThe Pellman Lab works on the mechanism of cell division and how certain cell division errors drive rapid genome evolution.  His research has contributed to the understanding of cell division, the origin of cell division errors in cancer, how cell division errors drive genetic instability and the mechanisms driving rapid evolution of cancer genomes. Our contributions include (1) the co-discovery of formin-dependent actin nucleation and a mechanism for spindle positioning during asymmetric cell division, (2) discoveries establishing that whole genome duplication can drive tumorigenesis, alter cell physiology, and accelerate evolutionary adaptation, and (3) the discovery of a mechanism explaining chromothripsis, a mutational process that generates rapid karyotype evolution in cancer and congenital disease.</div>\r\n</div>\r\n</div>\r\n</div>\r\n</div>\r\n</div>\r\n</div>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e552a16 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\">\r\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\"> </div>\r\n</div>",

            "description": "<strong>A Lola and John Grace Distinguished Lecture in Cancer Research</strong>\r\n<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-98cefd8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\">\r\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\"><br>\r\nFrank McCormick, PhD, is a Professor at the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center and holds the David A. Wood Chair of Tumor Biology and Cancer Research. Prior to joining the UCSF faculty, Dr. McCormick pursued cancer-related work with several Bay Area biotechnology firms and held positions with Cetus Corporation (Director of Molecular Biology, 1981-1990; Vice President of Research, 1990-1991) and Chiron Corporation, where he was Vice President of Research. In 1992 he founded Onyx Pharmaceuticals, a company dedicated to developing new cancer therapies, and served as its Chief Scientific Officer until 1996. At Onyx Pharmaceuticals, he initiated drug discovery efforts that led to the approval of Sorafenib in 2005 for treatment of renal cell cancer, and for liver cancer in 2007, and the approval of ONYX-015 in 2006 in China for treatment of nasopharyngeal cancer. In addition, Dr. McCormick’s group led to the identification of the CDK4 kinase inhibitor, Palbociclib, approved for treating advanced breast cancer. Dr. McCormick's current research interests center on ways of targeting Ras proteins and their regulators, including the NF1 protein neurofibromin.<br>\r\n<br>\r\nDr. McCormick was Director of the Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center from 1997 to 2014 and he served as President, 2012-2013, for the American Association for Cancer Research. Since 2013, Dr. McCormick has led the National Cancer Institute’s Ras Initiative at the Frederick National Laboratories for Cancer Research overseeing the national effort to develop therapies against Ras-driven cancers. Dr. McCormick was recently awarded (September 2025) the Inaugural Stephenson Global Prize Award in recognition of his research and discoveries that have transformed the field of RAS-driven cancers. <br>\r\n<br>\r\nDr. McCormick is the author of over 430 scientific publications and holds more than 20 issued patents and is a Fellow of the Royal Society and a member of the National Academy of Sciences.<br>\r\n </div>\r\n</div>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e552a16 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\">\r\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\"> </div>\r\n</div>",
