For decades, aging research has focused on the brain's own cells. But our bodies also carry a second, powerful system that changes with age: the immune system. Best known for fighting infections, the immune system also reaches into the brain and helps shape how it works. My research aims to answer a simple but underexplored question: as the immune system ages, does it stop protecting the brain and start harming it, and if so, can we intervene?
\r\n
\r\nI will share how I have used engineered proteins, delivered directly into the brain, to precisely target specific immune cells and rebalance their behavior. Building on this work, my lab is now developing a toolkit of precision tools, each aimed at a different brain immune cell type. The goal is to translate this work into \"aging immunotherapies\": treatments that restore balance to the aging immune system, strengthen the brain's resilience, and reduce the risk of neurodegenerative disease.
\r\n
\r\nAbout the speaker
\r\nPaloma Navarro Negredo studied Natural Sciences with an emphasis in Pharmacology at St John's College, University of Cambridge, before earning her Master's and PhD in Clinical Biochemistry, also at Cambridge. In the laboratory of Prof. Margaret S. Robinson she studied how proteins are sorted and trafficked inside cells. She then moved to Stanford University for postdoctoral research in the laboratory of Prof. Anne Brunet, supported by a Human Frontier Science Program fellowship. At Stanford she investigated changes in the aging brain, with a particular focus on immune cells and strategies to target them using engineered proteins.
\r\nPaloma is now an Assistant Professor at the School of Life Sciences at EPFL, where she leads a research group investigating how the aging immune system contributes to the decline of brain function.
\r\n
\r\n============================================
\r\nProf. Florian Schüder
\r\n
\r\nProgramming DNA for Multiplexed Super-Resolution Microscopy
\r\n
\r\nAbstract
\r\nFluorescence microscopy is one of the most widely used tools in biological research, allowing us to visualize the organization of cells and their molecular components. Over the past two decades, the development of super-resolution microscopy has revolutionized the field by making it possible to visualize structures far smaller than previously thought possible with light microscopy.
\r\nMy research combines these advanced imaging techniques with tools from DNA nanotechnology to further expand what we can see and measure inside cells. In this presentation, I will introduce recent developments in DNA-based super-resolution microscopy and show how these approaches can enable high-resolution imaging of many different molecular targets within the same sample, and discuss how these technologies can be used to address biological questions at the molecular scale.
\r\n
\r\nAbout the speaker
\r\nFlorian Schueder studied Physics at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and the Wyss Institute at Harvard University from 2009 to 2015. Three scientists discuss the challenges of space research, the latest discoveries, and imaginary worlds.
\r\n
\r\nDidier Queloz, winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics for the discovery of exoplanets, speaks with Camille Bonvin, a cosmologist, and Violaine Sautter, a planetary geologist and member of NASA’s Curiosity and Perseverance missions. The conversation, centered around a thermos, camping mugs, and a picnic, draws a connection to Ray Bradbury’s short story A Million-Year Picnic (1946), part of his *The Martian Chronicles*: a family must leave Earth and finds its own reflection while searching for Martians.
\r\n
\r\nEven today, the question remains: What do we learn about ourselves when we look at Mars? What kind of life—past or future—are we searching for in space? This film is the result of a collaborative, interdisciplinary creative process that took place at the Théâtre Vidy-Lausanne in 2024.
\r\n
\r\nAFTER THE SCREENING:
\r\nFollowing the screening, there will be a discussion between director Pauline Julier and Eric Vautrin, playwright at the Vidy Theater.
\r\n
\r\n---
\r\nBiography of Pauline Julier
\r\nPauline Julier (b. 1981, Geneva) is an artist and filmmaker whose practice explores the connections humans forge with the world around them through stories, rituals, knowledge, and images. Weaving together documentary, theoretical, and fictional elements, her films and installations reflect the complexity of human relationships with their environments and foster a dialogue between science and myth to renew our perspective on the world.
\r\n
\r\nHis works have been exhibited at major contemporary art centers, institutions, and festivals around the world, including the Centre Pompidou (Paris), the IAC (Villeurbanne), the Loop Festival (Barcelona), Visions du Réel (Nyon), Wiels (Brussels), the Centre d’Art Contemporain (Geneva), the ZKM (Karlsruhe), Tokyo Wonder Site, the Museum of Modern Art (Tanzania), the Palazzo Grassi (Venice), as well as in New York, Madrid, Berlin, Zagreb, the TIFF Cinematheque (Toronto), and the Pera Museum (Istanbul).
\r\n
\r\nA two-time recipient of the Swiss Art Prize (2010, 2021) and the “Mondes Nouveaux” grant from the French Ministry of Culture (2022), her solo exhibition *Naturalis Historia* toured internationally after its opening at the Swiss Cultural Center in Paris (2017). She presented a major solo exhibition at the Aargauer Kunsthaus in 2024 and is currently completing her first feature-length fiction film, *Les Indes*, scheduled for release in the fall of 2026.
\r\n \r\n
\r\n
© 2026 EPFL, Laura Persat
\r\n
\r\n
", "image_description": "", "creation_date": "2026-09-03T16:18:02", "last_modification_date": "2026-09-28T10:49:06", "link_label": "Programme complet des Culturelles", "link_url": "https://www.epfl.ch/campus/art-culture/fr/les-culturelles/les-culturelles-dautomne-2026/", "canceled": "False", "cancel_reason": "", "place_and_room": "Forum Rolex", "url_place_and_room": "https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==RLC%20E1%20240", "url_online_room": "", "spoken_languages": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/1/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=api" ], "speaker": "Pauline Julier, artiste et cinéaste & Eric Vautrin, dramaturge au théâtre de Vidy", "organizer": "Festival Les Culturelles (Pôle Culture VPI)", "contact": "Véronique Mauron Layaz", "is_internal": "False", "theme": "", "vulgarization": { "id": 1, "fr_label": "Tout public", "en_label": "General public" }, "registration": { "id": 3, "fr_label": "Entrée libre", "en_label": "Free" }, "keywords": "film, cosmologie, science-fiction", "file": null, "icalendar_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/121699/", "category": { "id": 9, "code": "MANIF", "fr_label": "Événements festifs et culturels", "en_label": "Cultural events", "activated": true }, "academic_calendar_category": null, "domains": [], "mementos": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/2/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/5/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/8/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/21/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/22/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/79/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/145/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/179/?format=api" ] }, { "id": 72346, "title": "School Lecture Series: Jo Taillieu / EPFL Architecture", "slug": "school-lecture-series-jo-taillieu-epfl-architectur", "event_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/school-lecture-series-jo-taillieu-epfl-architectur", "visual_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33606/200x112.jpg", "visual_large_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33606/720x405.jpg", "visual_maxsize_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33606/max-size.jpg", "lang": "en", "start_date": "2026-10-06", "end_date": "2026-10-06", "start_time": "18:30:00", "end_time": "20:00:00", "description": "1:33/1:2
\r\nOne of the most interesting public manifestations of learning in architecture are books about student‘s work. He later co-led architecten de vylder vinck taillieu, earning international recognition, including the Silver Lion for Promising Young Participant at the 16th Biennale of Venice, before refocusing on his own practice, JTA, from 2019 onward. JTA is worldwide published and awarded.
\r\n
\r\nPart of School Lecture Series, Autumn 2026, Learning Vol.1
\r\nWe are told that learning is no longer confined to the school or the university, but it has become a continuous process that involves the totality of life. Yet in accepting this reality, we take for granted several questions that loom large within the contemporary idea of learning. In a time when technology and information are ubiquitous, does it still make sense that for learning to happen or be confined within a place? Is learning still an asymmetrical relationship where there are teachers and a student? And above all, is learning accessible, or has it become too expensive a commodity? In this lecture series, we’ll attempt to answer these questions by investigating learning on different levels such as technology, construction systems, educational spaces, and above all, making architecture. The collections thus assembled become true research infrastructures: they provide a unique resource for education and research, accessible to students as well as to innovation communities at EPFL and around the world.
\r\n
\r\nIt was with this goal in mind that EPFL and the Verbier Festival launched the Verbier Festival Collection project in 2021. This exceptional collection now includes 3,000 hours of audio recordings, more than 1,000 hours of video, 12,000 historical photographs, archival documents, and a collection of annotated sheet music. It serves as a unique resource for research, innovation, and cultural transmission. As part of this collaboration, EPFL students are invited—upon registration and following a selection process—to participate in a master class during which they will draw on part of this heritage to create a musical work, which they will then present to an audience and a jury.
\r\n
\r\n---
\r\nPartners: Claude Latour Foundation, Verbier Festival, CHC Platform—Cultural Heritage & Conservation at EPFL, UNIL, Montreux Jazz Café, NAGRA
\r\n
\r\n>>> Free admission; aperitif available with registration
\r\n \r\n
\r\n\r\n
© 2026 EPFL, Laura Persat
\r\n
", "image_description": "", "creation_date": "2026-09-03T14:13:52", "last_modification_date": "2026-09-10T14:13:58", "link_label": "Inscription à l'apéritif", "link_url": "http://forms.cloud.microsoft/e/z8TTfURvwX", "canceled": "False", "cancel_reason": "", "place_and_room": "Montreux Jazz Café", "url_place_and_room": "https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==ART%20C0%20100", "url_online_room": "", "spoken_languages": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/1/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=api" ], "speaker": "Alain Dufaux, directeur de la Plateforme EPFL CHC - Cultural Heritage & Conservation ; Constance Frei, musicologue, professeure UNIL/EPFL ; Charlotte Graber, musicologue HEM, Genève ; Stephen McHolm, directeur de la Verbier Festival Academy ", "organizer": "Festival Les Culturelles (Pôle Culture VPI)", "contact": "Véronique Mauron Layaz", "is_internal": "False", "theme": "", "vulgarization": { "id": 1, "fr_label": "Tout public", "en_label": "General public" }, "registration": { "id": 3, "fr_label": "Entrée libre", "en_label": "Free" }, "keywords": "", "file": null, "icalendar_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/121682/", "category": { "id": 9, "code": "MANIF", "fr_label": "Événements festifs et culturels", "en_label": "Cultural events", "activated": true }, "academic_calendar_category": null, "domains": [], "mementos": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/2/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/4/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/5/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/8/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/21/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/22/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/79/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/145/?format=api" ] }, { "id": 72519, "title": "White Shadow - Exhibition", "slug": "white-shadow-exhibition", "event_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/white-shadow-exhibition", "visual_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33781/200x112.jpg", "visual_large_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33781/720x405.jpg", "visual_maxsize_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33781/max-size.jpg", "lang": "en", "start_date": "2026-10-14", "end_date": "2026-10-14", "start_time": "18:30:00", "end_time": "20:00:00", "description": "
Opening Reception: Wednesday, October 14 at 6:30 p.m.
\r\nExhibition on view from October 14, 2026, through February 9, 2027
\r\n
\r\nWhat if, one day, all our photographs suddenly transformed and became the very objects they depict? They would flood our living spaces with landscapes, selfies, cats, vehicles, and meals scattered as far as the eye can see.
\r\n
\r\nEvery day, we produce images, messages, and data that we store on servers and in the cloud. But what becomes of this digital output?
\r\nWhite Shadow is a series of photographs created by collectif_fact (Annelore Schneider and Claude Piguet). It was produced using photogrammetry, a technology that transforms photographs into 3D models. The images are generated from data sourced from online libraries. The result is a dizzying architecture so pervasive that it erects barriers and isolates individuals from one another. A society is emerging, grappling with media saturation, sensory overload, and a crushing ecological impact. A world is emerging where images have taken over, colonizing and transforming space until they become the only reality still visible.
\r\nThis narrative is a metaphor that prompts reflection on our responsibility regarding our daily digital output and its consequences for the environment.
\r\n
\r\ncollectif_fact
\r\ncollectif_fact, founded by Annelore Schneider (1979, Neuchâtel) and Claude Piguet (1977, Neuchâtel), explores the economics of the contemporary image through video and photography, drawing on speculative narratives and fiction. Their works have been exhibited at institutions such as the Maison européenne de la photographie (Paris), the Centre d’art contemporain (Geneva), the Swiss Cultural Center (Paris), the Hiroshima Museum of Contemporary Art, the Lianzhou Foto Festival, the Metropolis Art Center (Beijing), and the Fotomuseum Winterthur. They recently received the Landis & Gyr residency in London, the New Point of View Award from This is Short (European Short Film Network), and the Best Short Film Award at the International Festival of Films on Art (FIFA). They are represented by Galerie Wilde in Geneva.
\r\n
\r\nTheir works—videos, photographs, and installations—are part of the following collections: the City of Paris Municipal Contemporary Art Fund, Haus der Elektronischen Künste, Basel; the Lyon Museum of Contemporary Art; the Federal Office of Culture, Bern; the Fotomuseum Winterthur; the Neuchâtel Museum of Art and History; La Chaux-de-Fonds Museum of Fine Arts, Geneva Municipal Contemporary Art Collection, Geneva Cantonal Contemporary Art Collection, Museum of Communication, Bern, Visual Arts Collection, City of Biel, and Sion Art Museum.
\r\n
\r\n> Collectif-Fact website
\r\n \r\n
\r\n
© 2026 EPFL, Laura Persat
\r\n
\r\n
", "image_description": "", "creation_date": "2026-09-03T17:54:09", "last_modification_date": "2026-09-07T14:13:26", "link_label": "", "link_url": "", "canceled": "False", "cancel_reason": "", "place_and_room": "Hall du Rolex Learning Center", "url_place_and_room": "https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==RLC%20G1%2094.12", "url_online_room": "", "spoken_languages": [], "speaker": "collectif_fact (Annelore Schneider et Claude Piguet)", "organizer": "Festival Les Culturelles (Pôle Culture VPI)", "contact": "Véronique Mauron Layaz", "is_internal": "False", "theme": "", "vulgarization": { "id": 1, "fr_label": "Tout public", "en_label": "General public" }, "registration": { "id": 3, "fr_label": "Entrée libre", "en_label": "Free" }, "keywords": "", "file": null, "icalendar_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/121707/", "category": { "id": 5, "code": "EXPO", "fr_label": "Expositions", "en_label": "Exhibitions", "activated": true }, "academic_calendar_category": null, "domains": [], "mementos": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/2/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/5/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/8/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/21/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/22/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/145/?format=api" ] } ] }
