What transformations are needed for businesses to have a positive and lasting impact?
\r\n
\r\nTo explore these questions, EPFL is pleased to invite you to a special Campus Lecture with Mr André Hoffmann, Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors of Roche, Co-Chair of the World Economic Forum and former Vice-President of WWF. To mark the publication of his book The New Nature of Business: The Path to Prosperity & Sustainability, André Hoffmann will share his thoughts on how capitalism is evolving in the face of the climate, environmental and societal challenges of our time, and on how businesses can respond to them. This Campus Lecture will offer an opportunity to explore the transformations the business world must undergo to tackle climate change and preserve biodiversity.
\r\n
\r\nAbout André Hoffmann
\r\nMr André Hoffmann is a Swiss businessman. A member of the Board of Directors of Roche since 1996 and Vice-Chairman of the group, he is also Co-Chair of the World Economic Forum alongside Laurence D. Fink. The son of ornithologist and WWF co-founder Luc Hoffmann, André Hoffmann served for many years as Vice-President of WWF and is an active investor in projects related to sustainability and the energy transition. In 2024, together with journalist Peter Vanham, he published The New Nature of Business, a case for a form of capitalism that places natural, social and human capital alongside financial capital.",

            "description": "Abstract: In this talk I will discuss our recent results on the microscopic physical origins of shear thickening in two vastly different materials: colloidal suspensions and active gels. In the first part of my talk, I will introduce a method we have developed that allows us to resolve the spatial distribution of stresses in sheared soft-materials, known as Boundary Stress Microscopy. We have applied this technique to suspensions undergoing shear thickening. I will present our results on the existence of clearly defined dynamically localized regions of substantially increased stress that appear intermittently at stresses well above the applied stress. Surprisingly, we find that these spatially distinct and dynamic phases quantitatively account for the observed shear thickening seen in sheared colloidal dispersions (e.g. Oobleck). In the second part of my talk I will discuss our results on the rheology of active matter. Our system is composed of microtubules and kinesin motor proteins that self-assemble to form complexes that propel themselves through the fluid. What results is a dramatic alteration in the measured viscosity. I will provide a simple physical model that fits the rheological response with zero fitting parameters.
\r\n
\r\nBiography: Daniel Blair is a Professor of physics and a co-founding member of the Institute for Soft Matter Synthesis and Metrology I(SM)2 at Georgetown University. Prior to joining Georgetown in 2007, Professor Blair was a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University in the Paulson School of Engineering and the Department of Physics. In 2009, he was awarded the NSF Career Award and has done pioneering work into the structure and rheology of soft and biological materials. His group has developed a variety of tools and techniques centered on quantitative 4D microscopy coupled with microfluidic and rheometric methods. ",

            "description": "
In this talk, I'll take a look at three \"microbial vignettes\". In the first, I'll examine how the presence of co-habiting microbes profoundly affects the biology of a human pathogen, Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This is important, because in diseased human airways - where P. aeruginosa is an unwelcome, but common inhabitant - the pathogen invariably shares the infection site with a variety of other microbes. It turns out that these microbial neighbours interact with one another and that these interactions are perturbed by the loss of a quorum sensing \"master regulator\" (LasR) in P. aeruginosa. In the second \"short\", I'll talk about how we are now able to manipulate the rate of evolution of the organism, either by \"stepping on the gas pedal\" or by \"slamming on the brakes\". The ability to do this, in an experimentally-controlled manner, is allowing us to access some novel evolutionary trajectories, and to address some truly fundamental biological questions. Finally, I'll take a fresh look at bacterial biofilms and in particular, examine whether the exopolysaccharide \"bioglue\" that holds these structures together might have additional - possibly more important roles. It turns out that it does, and that the exopolysaccharide matrix acts as a \"net\" to selectively sequester secreted proteins, potentially conferring novel functionalities on the biofilm.
\r\n
\r\nBrief Speaker Bio.
\r\nAfter reading for a degree in Biochemistry at the University of Oxford, Martin completed a PhD on bacterial chemotaxis at the Weizmann Institute of Science (Israel), where he was awarded the Wolf Prize for his contributions to the field. Leavuing Israel with a PhD and a [German] wife, he then moved to Toulouse (supported by a long-term EMBO fellowship) where he learned the dark art of x-ray crystallography and solved the structure of a signaling complex involved in bacterial chemotaxis. He then moved back to the UK to take up a post-doctoral position at the University of Cambridge working on quorum sensing in the fascinating plant pathogen, Pectobacterium atrosepticum. There, he developed skills in molecular genetics and demonstrated (for the first time) that quorum sensing molecules bind directly to their cognate LuxR homologs in a range of bacteria. This advance allowed him to secure a Royal Society University Research Fellowship to start his own group - where he learned the hard way that prospective students don't like any project with the word \"plant\" in, and when offered projects on the plant pathogen versus a mammalian pathogen, always went for the latter. Since around 2000, his team's focus has been on understanding better the link between metabolism and virulence in the opportunistic human pathogen, Pseudomonas aeruginosa. He is now Professor of Microbial Physiology and Metabolism at the University of Cambridge.
",
