            "description": "<p>Join us for this exciting lecture at F'AR, organized by two laboratories from EPFL Architecture:<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<strong>Building for Time</strong> examines architecture not as a finished object, but as a material process unfolding across multiple lifespans. Drawing from ancient practices of reuse, cannibalization, and ritualized demolition, Brandon Clifford explores how past cultures anticipated the afterlives of their buildings—and what those strategies can teach us about designing structures that expect transformation, disassembly, and reuse. The lecture proposes future architectures that are conceived with their second (and third) lives already embedded in their form, material logic, and construction.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<strong>Brandon Clifford </strong>mines ancient construction techniques to envision transformative architectural futures. He is the director and co-founder of Matter Design and an associate professor of Architecture at MIT, and is known for animating megalithic structures to perform acts of construction and assembly. Clifford has pioneered <em>projective archaeology</em>—architecture’s version of magical realism—which blends historical practices with speculative futures to rethink material lifecycles, ceremony, and architectural afterlives. He is the author of <em>The Cannibal’s Cookbook</em> and a recipient of the American Academy in Rome Prize, TED Fellowship, MacDowell Fellowship, and the Architectural League Prize.</p>",

            "description": "<strong>Title</strong>: <br>\r\nPositive random walks and positive-semidefinite random matrices<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<strong>Abstract</strong>:<br>\r\nOn the real line, a random walk that can only move in the positive direction is very unlikely to remain close to its origin. After a fixed number of steps, the left tail has a Gaussian profile under minimal assumptions. Remarkably, a similar phenomenon occurs when we consider a positive random walk on the cone of positive-semidefinite matrices. After a fixed number of steps, the minimum eigenvalue is described by a Gaussian random matrix model.<br>\r\nThis talk introduces a new way to make this intuition rigorous. The methodology addresses an open problem in computational mathematics about sparse random embeddings.             "description": "<p>Macrocyclic peptides are promising molecules for targeting intracellular protein–protein interactions and other challenging biological targets. However, their poor membrane permeability often limits their biological and therapeutic applications. Understanding the structural factors that govern passive membrane permeation is therefore essential for the rational design of cell-permeable macrocyclic peptides.<br>\r\n<br>\r\nIn this seminar, I will present our recent efforts to understand and predict the membrane permeability of macrocyclic peptides using large-scale experimental data, conformational analysis, and machine learning. We aim to clarify how conformational flexibility, including molecular chameleonicity, influences membrane permeability.<br>\r\n<br>\r\nI will also introduce our ongoing efforts toward DNA-encoded macrocyclic N-methyl peptide libraries as a future platform for discovering functional intracellular binders.</p>",

            "description": "<p>Covalent Ligand Directed Release (CoLDR) chemistry has emerged as a versatile strategy for targeted covalent modulation of protein function. In this talk, I will present several new (unpublished) applications of CoLDR chemistry spanning molecular optimization, targeted protein degradation, and protein activation. I will describe the development of high-throughput synthetic approaches for rapid generation and optimization of CoLDR inhibitor libraries. I will then present a high-throughput screening platform for the discovery of novel CoLDR-based PROTACs and will discuss the design and evaluation of new DCAF16-recruiting CoLDR PROTACs for targeted protein degradation. Finally, I will demonstrate how homodimeric CoLDR recruiters can be leveraged for induced protein activation, highlighting an emerging application of CoLDR chemistry beyond degradation. Together, these studies establish CoLDR as a broadly applicable platform for chemical biology and therapeutic discovery.</p>",
