The Petrichor installation aims to restore rain’s central role and encourage reflection on its presence. <br>\r\n<br>\r\nThe installation consists of two parts:<br>\r\n \r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>A 1-square-meter funnel </strong>that collects rainwater while amplifying its sound. The funnel is modeled after a flower—the bromeliad—which naturally collects rainwater. The water is then channeled into the second part of the installation.<br>\r\n\t.</li>\r\n\t<li><strong>A wooden cabinet containing 63 plastic containers, each holding 5 liters.</strong> All the containers are connected to one another by a system of pipes; the rainwater fills the containers from the bottom up. The 10 containers at the bottom of the cabinet are marked in blue; this corresponds to the minimum daily water intake for one person, as defined by the WHO, which is 50 liters. The containers above them—totaling 265 liters—represent the average water consumption of a person in Switzerland, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office. This cabinet highlights the contrast between these two volumes. By relating these figures to the collected rainwater, the installation demonstrates that water remains a limited resource and is therefore a major challenge for the world today and in the future.</li>\r\n</ul>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"BCX2 Ltr OutlineElement SCXW43647999\">The installation has aesthetic and auditory elements designed to enliven the campus and demonstrate a commitment to sustainability. Its goal is to encourage students to reflect on water usage and spark new ideas for managing this resource.<br>\r\n<br>\r\nLaunched in 2025, Petrichor is a project developed by the <strong>AAIE (Association of Artist-Engineers at EPFL),</strong> which aims to build a community around contemporary art on campus by organizing meetings with artists and museum outings. Achieving net-zero transport requires coordinated action across energy carriers, carbon flows and mitigation of other pollutants. This talk presents a multiscale engineering framework for sustainable mobility, organised around three complementary pathways: <u>f</u>uel development (F), <u>g</u>reenhouse-gas management (G) and mitigating <u>h</u>armful emissions beyond CO<sub>2</sub> (H). First, using solar-driven CO<sub>2</sub> conversion as an example, I will show how the precise transport of light, heat and fluids enables the coordinated design of materials, devices and systems, maximising solar-to-fuel conversion efficiency. Second, I will explore on-board carbon capture for road and maritime transport, together with distributed carbon-removal networks that use existing vehicles, ventilation systems and transport infrastructure. Third, I will discuss particulate matter generated by brake and tyre wear, illustrating how materials engineering can balance filtration efficiency, pressure drop and energy demand. Finally, the talk considers how techno-economic assessment and the interplay between technology, business and policy can move laboratory innovations towards industrial deployment.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<strong>Biography: </strong>Dr Xiangkun (Elvis) Cao (<a href=\"https://profiles.imperial.ac.uk/elvis.cao\">https://profiles.imperial.ac.uk/elvis.cao</a>) is currently an Assistant Professor at Imperial College London, holding joint appointments in Mechanical Engineering and the Grantham Institute. Cao leads the Laboratory for Integrated Green Harvesting & Transport, the LIGHT Lab, which seeks to engineer the physical systems for a sustainable future. Before joining Imperial, Cao was a Schmidt Science Fellow at MIT, where he pursued integrated carbon capture and utilisation under the guidance of Professor Ted Sargent. He received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University, his MEng in Materials Engineering from McGill University, and dual bachelor’s degrees in Energy and Power Engineering and English Literature from Xi’an Jiaotong University. He has published more than 30 first- or corresponding-author papers in journals including <em>Joule</em>, <em>Matter</em>, <em>Device</em> and <em>Advanced Materials</em>. Cao was named one of MIT Technology Review’s 35 Innovators Under 35 globally in 2024 and was previously recognised in Forbes 30 Under 30 in Energy for North America. The call is led by Prof. emeritus Marco Mazzotti, who oversees project evaluation, monitoring, and funding decisions, with support from SFOE experts. If milestones are not met, he may terminate projects and reallocate any funds that become available.<br>\r\n<br>\r\nThe <strong>guiding theme </strong>of<a href=\"https://www.bfe.admin.ch/en/sour-call-1-2026-en\"> the call</a> is <strong>“Supply Security on the Path to a Net-Zero Energy System.”</strong> It seeks <strong>high-risk, high-potential “game-changing” technologies</strong> that could substantially improve Switzerland’s energy security while advancing the transition to net-zero, e.g., by increasing renewable production, enabling better integration into the energy system, or reducing energy consumption. <br>\r\n<br>\r\nThe key idea is <strong>not incremental improvement</strong>: projects should aim for a <strong>major technological leap</strong>, starting around TRL 3–4 and reaching at least TRL 6, with <strong>commercialisation considered from the outset</strong>. In other words, SOUR is looking for unconventional technologies that could fundamentally shift the cost/performance frontier and eventually achieve significant market deployment in Switzerland.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<strong><u>Funding duration:</u></strong> The total funding for this call is CHF 4 Mio., with which at most 4 projects will be supported. Each project may apply for up to CHF 1.33 million over a maximum period of three years. The start of the projects is planned for April 2027.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<u><strong>Applications:</strong></u> Applications for SOUR funding proceed through a single proposal and require the formation of a team, a work programme, and a budget.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<u><strong>Project Team:</strong></u> A team is led by one Principal Investigator (PI) and may contain one or more Co-PIs. Because SOUR funding is intended for small teams, the team size should be conducive to producing a major leap and enters into the evaluation.
