"description": "
Recent advances in foundation models are extending AI beyond perception and language understanding toward embodied systems that can perceive, reason, and act in the physical world. This transition is accelerating the development of vision-language-action (VLA) models and robot foundation models that aim to provide robots with more general, adaptive, and deployable intelligence.
\r\nThis talk presents recent progress toward self-working humanoid robots, covering key ideas in embodied AI such as multimodal understanding, long-horizon planning, action generation, and real-world deployment. It also introduces recent research from Seoul National University BI Lab and AI Institute on human-robot interaction, personalization, continual adaptation, and language-conditioned robot learning, together with the Habilis framework developed at Tommoro Robotics for deployable humanoid intelligence.
\r\nFinally, the talk discusses a future architecture for self-working humanoids that integrates perception, memory, reasoning, planning, and action into a unified learning system. The central theme is that while large language models enabled machines to communicate, vision-language-action models will enable machines to work autonomously in the real world.
\r\n
\r\nByoung-Tak Zhang's biography
\r\nPresent:
\r\nProfessor of Computer Science, Seoul National University,
\r\nDirector of the Humanoid AI Robot Center (HARC),
\r\nChairman of the K-Humanoid Alliance (Korean Government)
\r\n2019-2025:
\r\nFounding Director of SNU AI Institute (AIIS)
\r\n2007-2008:
\r\nVisiting Professor, Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology
\r\n2003-2004:
\r\nVisiting Professor, MIT CS&AI Lab (CSAIL)
\r\n1992-1995:
\r\nResearch Associate, German National Research Center for Computer Science (GMD)
\r\n1988-1992:
\r\nPhD in Computer Science, University of Bonn
\r\n1982-1988:
\r\nBS and MS in Computer Science, Seoul National University
\r\n
",

"description": "Aim: Through the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program (CDMRP), the Department of Defense is announcing the 2026 Breast Cancer Research Program (BCRP) Awards. Several award programs are available:\r\n
\r\n\t
The Breakthrough Awards supports promising research that has high potential to lead to or make breakthroughs in breast cancer. The Breakthrough Award is structured with four different funding levels. Each level has a defined research scope :\r\n\t
\r\n\t\t
Funding Level 1: Innovative, high-risk/high-reward research that is in the earliest stages of idea development or is an untested theory that addresses an important problem.
\r\n\t\t
Funding Level 2: Research that is already supported by substantial preliminary or published data and strongly validates clinical translation in a well-defined context within the breast cancer landscape.
\r\n\t\t
Funding Level 3: Advanced translational studies with a high degree of project readiness.
\r\n\t\t
Funding Level 4: Large-scale projects that will transform and revolutionize the clinical management and/or prevention of breast cancer. Human clinical trials are required.
\r\n\t
\r\n\t
\r\n\t
The Clinical Research Extension Award aims to extend the data collection, follow-up, and analysis of breast cancer clinical research studies. Proposed research may entail a deeper molecular analysis of clinical samples, initiation of new correlative studies, biomarker validation, or continuing clinical follow-up of patients currently/previously enrolled in an open/ongoing or completed clinical trial.
\r\n\t
The Era of Hope Scholar Award supports individuals early in their careers who have demonstrated significant potential to effect meaningful change in breast cancer. These individuals should be exceptionally talented scientists who have shown that they are the “best and brightest” in their field(s)
\r\n\t
The Transformative Breast Cancer Consortium Award is designed to support large-scale, multidisciplinary and multi-institutional consortia that address major challenges in breast cancer through tightly integrated and collaborative research efforts. It enables up to five Principal Investigators, including a Consortium Director, to work within a coordinated framework where all project components are aligned toward a shared central hypothesis. The award specifically aims to foster innovative and paradigm-shifting approaches that go beyond the capabilities of individual laboratories, requiring strong integration across scientific, administrative, and logistical aspects, as well as the active involvement of breast cancer advocates and cross-disciplinary expertise.
\r\n\t
The Transformative Breast Cancer Consortium Development Award is intended to provide successful applicants the time and resources needed to bring investigators and breast cancer advocates together to establish a consortium framework and conduct preliminary research to support application to a future, full Transformative Breast Cancer Consortium Award (pending availability of funds). This is a development award and is a separate mechanism from the full consortium award. Recipients of the FY26 Transformative Breast Cancer Consortium Development Award are expected to submit an application to compete for the full Transformative Breast Cancer Consortium Award anticipated to be offered in a future fiscal year(s).
\r\n
\r\n
\r\nAll applications must align with at least one BCRP Overarching Challenge. The FY26 BCRP Challenges are listed at the end of this announcement.
\r\n
\r\nFunding:
\r\nBreakthrough 1: $750K - $1.25M
\r\nBreakthrough 2: $1.65M - $3.35M
\r\nBreakthrough 3: $5.6M - $7M
\r\nBreakthrough 4: max. $21M
\r\nClinical Research Extension: $7M - $8.4M
\r\nEra of Hope: max. $4.9M
\r\nTransformative Breast Cancer Consortium Award: max. $35M
\r\nTransformative Breast Cancer Consortium Development Award: max. $140K
\r\nNote: Cost caps are total costs (direct plus indirect costs). In accordance with EPFL guidelines, budgets should include a 20% overhead, and the total budget must remain within the grant’s maximum allowable funding.
\r\n
\r\nDuration:
\r\nBreakthrough 1: 3 years
\r\nBreakthrough 2: 3-4 years
\r\nBreakthrough 3: 4 years
\r\nBreakthrough 4: 4 years
\r\nClinical Research Extension: 4 years
\r\nEra of Hope: 4 years
\r\nTransformative Breast Cancer Consortium Award: 4 years
\r\nTransformative Breast Cancer Consortium Development Award: 1 year
\r\n
\r\nEligibility: Applicants from international organizations or institutions are eligible to apply, and there are no citizenship restrictions. Today, we have sold over 1,000 upper-body dual-arm robots, NEXTAGE, both domestically and internationally, contributing to factory automation. I will introduce my company and the history of humanoid development at our company.
\r\n
\r\nYuichiro Kawasumi is a Chief Engineer at Kawada Technologies, Inc., specializing in humanoid software and social implementation. He began his career developing the HRP-2 series with AIST, establishing core humanoid control expertise. This led to the successful spin-out of NEXTAGE, a torso-type robot that transformed high-end research into practical factory automation. Building on this real-world success, Kawasumi recently launched a project to develop next-generation legged robots in late 2025. Returning to his roots in full-body mobility, he aims to pioneer the next era of humanoid automation to solve critical global labor shortages.
",

            "description": "EDIC candidacy exam
\r\nExam president: Prof. Nicolas Flammarion
\r\nThesis advisor: Prof. Pascal Fua
\r\nCo-examiner: Prof. Alexander Mathis
\r\n
\r\nAbstract
\r\nMany high-impact problems in science and engineering reduce to optimizing a complex objective, where each evaluation is costly and often unreliable: physical experiments fail, simulators diverge, and stochastic systems return noisy feedback. Classical black-box optimizers struggle in this regime, where evaluation budgets are tight and the feasible region is hard to characterize a priori. Our work investigates how the statistical expressivity of modern generative samplers can be leveraged in black-box optimization. We propose that these samplers enable efficient navigation of feasible sets and optimization of geometrically complex objectives under limited, unreliable observations.
\r\n
\r\nTwo complementary lines of work have already been studied. The main one, SPARROW, demonstrated that a sampler-driven optimizer can substantially reduce the number of function calls needed to maximize complex and unreliable objectives. A parallel line established that samplers can be steered to satisfy hard constraints without sacrificing the statistical diversity of the generated samples. Because SPARROW imposes minimal assumptions on the underlying sampler, these constrained samplers can drive it directly, opening a path to constrained black-box optimization.
\r\n
\r\nBuilding on these results, two directions are planned. The first is theoretical: a deeper mathematical study of sampler-driven optimization, drawing on the broader literature on sample-efficient black-box optimization, in order to derive stronger guarantees and more efficient algorithms. The second is applied: applying the methods to concrete domains and exploiting the structure those domains expose to sharpen performance beyond what a pure black-box treatment can achieve.
\r\n
\r\nThe applications of low-budget black-box optimization are diverse, including engineering design (e.g. aerodynamic shape optimization, mechanical components), scientific discovery (e.g. protein and molecule design under synthesizability and stability constraints), and the safety and security of opaque ML systems (e.g. query-efficient adversarial probing, red-teaming of black-box models).
\r\n
\r\nSelected papers
\r\n ",
