Dyson Professor of Pediatric Oncology at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, a Professor of Cell Biology at Harvard Medical School, an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and the Associate Director for Basic Science at the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center. He received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Chicago. During medical school, he did research at the Rockefeller University. His postdoctoral fellowship was at the Whitehead Institute/Massachusetts Institute of Technology.<br>\r\n<br>\r\nThe Pellman Lab works on the mechanism of cell division and how certain cell division errors drive rapid genome evolution. His research has contributed to the understanding of cell division, the origin of cell division errors in cancer, how cell division errors drive genetic instability and the mechanisms driving rapid evolution of cancer genomes. Between 2022 and 2025, I have been involved in the development of the British Challenger for the 37th America’s Cup (iconic Yacht competition), leading the Fluid Dynamics team towards the end.<br>\r\nSince summer 2025, I am a scientist at LFMI on a FNS funded project “Why do albatrosses and pelicans morph to an arch-shaped wing configuration when gliding near the water surface?”.<strong> <br>\r\n<br>\r\nBertrand's Bio: </strong>After completing an Aerospace Engineering degree from ISAE-SUPAERO (Toulouse, France) and Université de Toulouse, where I specialized on Earth observation, numerical modeling and climate science, I completed my PhD at Météo-France's Center for Snow Studies (CEN, Grenoble, France). I worked for four years as a postdoc at the Snow and Avalanche Research Lab (SLF, Davos, Switzerland), at the interface between research and operational flood forecasting. After a fixed number of steps, the left tail has a Gaussian profile under minimal assumptions. Remarkably, a similar phenomenon occurs when we consider a positive random walk on the cone of positive-semidefinite matrices. After a fixed number of steps, the minimum eigenvalue is described by a Gaussian random matrix model.<br>\r\nThis talk introduces a new way to make this intuition rigorous. The methodology addresses an open problem in computational mathematics about sparse random embeddings. The financial contribution covers the salaries of doctoral candidates for the duration of 3 years (4 years for Joint Doctorates) and research, training and networking costs covering the whole project duration.
