            "description": "<strong>A Lola and John Grace Distinguished Lecture in Cancer Research</strong>\r\n<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-98cefd8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\">\r\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\"><br>\r\nSarah Teichmann completed her PhD at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, UK, and was a Beit Memorial Fellow at University College London. She established her research group at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in 2001, where her main discoveries included the finding that protein assembly pathways are stereotypical and conserved. In 2013, she transitioned to the Wellcome Genome Campus, where she became the first and, to date, the only faculty member appointed across both the EMBL-European Bioinformatics Institute and the Wellcome Sanger Institute. In 2016, she was appointed as the Head of the Cellular Genetics programme at the Wellcome Sanger Institute and co-founded the Human Cell Atlas initiative. From April 2024, she was appointed chair in Stem Cell Medicine at the University of Cambridge, within the Department of Medicine and the Cambridge Stem Cell Institute. Additionally, Sarah dedicates part of her time to GlaxoSmithKline and to EnsoCell Therapeutics, the startup company she co-founded. The Teichmann lab focuses on developing and applying cell atlas technologies to understand human tissue architecture, particularly examining how cellular diversity is generated in the immune system and during development.</div>\r\n</div>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e552a16 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\">\r\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\"> </div>\r\n</div>",

            "description": "<p>2D materials have emerged over the last decade as the new playground for quantum photonics<br>\r\ndevices. Among them, hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is an interesting candidate, mainly because of its<br>\r\ncrystallographic compatibility with different 2D materials, but also because of its ability to harbour optically<br>\r\nactive defects that generate single photons. The negatively charged boron vacancy was the first intrinsic<br>\r\noptically addressable spin defect in hBN reported in 2020, allowing coherent control at room temperature.<br>\r\nAlthough other types of spin centres have been found in this material since then, this spin-1 colour centre<br>\r\nremains the only one with a clearly elucidated structure. Practical applications of hBN spin centres as<br>\r\nintrinsic magnetic field, temperature, pressure, etc. sensors in van der Waals heterostructures are hence<br>\r\nenvisioned. To further boost the quantum sensing applications of this spin defect in hBN, we are currently<br>\r\ninvestigating the dynamics of the intermediate state, also known as the metastable state, because it is likely<br>\r\nto trap electrons for a certain time, which affects the subsequent sensing protocol when the pulsed<br>\r\nmagnetic resonance experiment is designed.</p>",

            "speaker": "<strong>Prof. Vladimir Dyakonov</strong> holds the Chair of Experimental Physics on the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy of Julius-Maximilian University of Würzburg, Germany since 2004. He studied physics at the University of Leningrad and received his diploma degree in 1986. Since 1990, he has been a visiting researcher at the universities of Bayreuth (Germany), Antwerp (Belgium) and Linz (Austria). He finished his habilitation in experimental physics at the University of Oldenburg (Germany) in 2001. In 2007-2009 he was the Vice-dean and in 2013-2015 the Dean of the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Würzburg. Dyakonov’s main research interests are in the fields of semiconductor spectroscopy, thin-film organic and hybrid photovoltaics, organic light-emitting diodes and sensors. He published ca. 230 peer-reviewed scientific papers and has h-index of 84. ",

            "description": "<p>Hosted by Solange Denervaud, CIBM Flagship Project Officer, we are pleased  to invite you to attend the CIBM Visitors Talk on April 24th at 13:00 CEST by Mary Helen Immordino-Yang from the University of Southern California who will be sharing on “Longitudinal neurodevelopmental correlates of mid-adolescents’ psychosocial processing: A path to young adult wellbeing?”.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<strong>Abstract</strong><br>\r\nCombining open-ended interviews (outside the scanner) with structural, trial-by-trial, and resting-state functional MRI neuroimaging, we examined real-time functional neural dynamics underlying diverse urban mid-adolescents’ cognitive and emotional engagement with compelling social stories at two time-points, two years apart. We found that the patterns of longitudinal change in neural network dynamics predicted psychosocial outcomes five years later in young adulthood.<br>\r\nWe found that “transcendent thinking” – seeing situations not just in terms of X happened to person A, which makes me feel thusly, but in terms of the larger societal and contextual forces that shaped how Person A was treated and how Person A reacted, the broader implications and lessons one can draw from that situation, and the larger issues it exemplifies or reveals—correlated with a particular set of neural activity dynamics and predicted future structural and functional neural development across the subsequent two years, controlling for the starting state of neural development, and independent of IQ and SES. Transcendent thinking also countered negative effects of exposure to community violence on structural brain development.<br>\r\nThe neural development predicted by transcendent thinking (the changes in the brain across the 2-year period) in turn predicted young adult identity strength, self-liking, relationship satisfaction, and achievement 5 years later.<br>\r\nThese findings reveal a novel predictor of neural development across mid-adolescence, and underscore the active role adolescents play in their own brain development through the meaning they make of the social world. Implications for secondary education and pedagogy will be discussed.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n </p>",
