She established her research group at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in 2001, where her main discoveries included the finding that protein assembly pathways are stereotypical and conserved. In 2013, she transitioned to the Wellcome Genome Campus, where she became the first and, to date, the only faculty member appointed across both the EMBL-European Bioinformatics Institute and the Wellcome Sanger Institute. In 2016, she was appointed as the Head of the Cellular Genetics programme at the Wellcome Sanger Institute and co-founded the Human Cell Atlas initiative. From April 2024, she was appointed chair in Stem Cell Medicine at the University of Cambridge, within the Department of Medicine and the Cambridge Stem Cell Institute. Additionally, Sarah dedicates part of her time to GlaxoSmithKline and to EnsoCell Therapeutics, the startup company she co-founded. The Teichmann lab focuses on developing and applying cell atlas technologies to understand human tissue architecture, particularly examining how cellular diversity is generated in the immune system and during development.
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
\r\n

\r\n
", "image_description": "", "creation_date": "2026-01-28T14:35:28", "last_modification_date": "2026-02-13T13:56:17", "link_label": "", "link_url": "", "canceled": "False", "cancel_reason": "", "place_and_room": "SV 1717", "url_place_and_room": "https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==SV%201717", "url_online_room": "https://epfl.zoom.us/j/97039045251?pwd=WDFjUGV3Y1FxeG9rTUIrOGpiUXhLQT09", "spoken_languages": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=api" ], "speaker": "Sarah Teichmann FMedSci FRS (Group Leader), Cambridge Stem Cell Institute & Department of Medicine, Jeffrey Cheah Biomedical Centre, University of Cambridge", "organizer": "Prof. Charlotte Bunne", "contact": "Lisa Smith, ISREC Administrative Assistant", "is_internal": "True", "theme": "", "vulgarization": { "id": 2, "fr_label": "Public averti", "en_label": "Informed public" }, "registration": { "id": 3, "fr_label": "Entrée libre", "en_label": "Free" }, "keywords": "Grace Lecture, cancer", "file": null, "icalendar_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/119505/", "category": { "id": 1, "code": "CONF", "fr_label": "Conférences - Séminaires", "en_label": "Conferences - Seminars", "activated": true }, "academic_calendar_category": null, "domains": [], "mementos": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/26/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/9/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=api" ] }, { "id": 71342, "title": "lunch&LEARN: AI for formative feedback. This solicitation funds Phase 1 of the program: development of protocols, tools, and methodologies to accelerate adaptation.
\r\n
\r\nARIA provides a live teaming tool here and organizes a webinar for questions and clarifications on 24 February 2026 (12:30 GMT) - register here
\r\n
\r\nARIA is seeking to fund teams across the following program areas:
\r\n \r\n
\r\n\t
TA1 System-focused Teams: Demonstrate accelerated adaptation, against a benchmark, in specific systems. Applications could focus on strategically chosen vulnerable species, such as trees, which can support hundreds of other species, and/or critical functional groups such as pollinators or soil nutrient cycles that underpin ecosystem services.
\r\n
\r\n \r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
TA3 Modelling: Increase our current predictive capacity with respect to modelling ecosystem resilience, integration of genetic, population and ecosystem‑level data, and understanding the impacts of potential interventions.
\r\n
\r\n \r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
TA4 Data & analytics: Make results comparable across teams, trusted and legible including through delivering training, and developing shared protocols, and data visualization mechanisms. Ensure that claims made by system-focused teams are independently verified.
\r\n
\r\n \r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
TA5 Ethics + social responsibility: Recognizing there is a diverse set of ethical considerations in the funded areas, we will not be prescriptive in what can be funded in this TA. Activity could include co-developing ESR tools, frameworks and guidance; delivering training to project teams; producing evidence that could inform future governance models/regulatory pathways.
\r\n
\r\n
\r\nEach application should focus on a single TA. Applicants may submit multiple applications, provided each addresses a different TA.
\r\n
\r\nDuration: The duration of the program is four years, two years for Phase 1 funded here.
\r\n
\r\nFunding: Funding levels vary by Technical Area (please refer to the call document).
\r\n
\r\nEligibility: \r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
Applications from across the R&D ecosystem, including individuals, universities, research institutions, small, medium and large companies, charities and public sector research organisations are welcomed.
\r\n\t
Many applicants may decide to apply as a consortium consisting of two or more organisations that are proposing a cohesive proposal to work collaboratively.
\r\n\t
Overseas applicants are advised that ARIA's primary focus will be on funding those who are based in the UK.
