Motivated by recent results on the higher moments of the SHE in two dimensions at $L^{2}$-criticality, a natural question is whether the higher moments of the SHE in high dimensions also converge at the $L^{2}$-critical point. Our main result gives a negative answer: in high dimensions, the higher moments diverge when the coupling constant belongs to a nontrivial right-closed interval whose upper endpoint is the $L^{2}$-critical point. In particular, we obtain a sharp bound for the critical coupling constant at which the corresponding limiting higher moment undergoes a phase transition. As an application to the continuous directed polymer, we derive a sharp estimate for quantity believed to be closely related to the tail probability of the limiting partition function.
", "image_description": "", "creation_date": "2025-09-12T13:47:07", "last_modification_date": "2026-03-30T15:59:29", "link_label": "Working-Reading Seminar", "link_url": "https://www.epfl.ch/labs/stoan/reading-working-seminar/", "canceled": "False", "cancel_reason": "", "place_and_room": "MA B2 485", "url_place_and_room": "", "url_online_room": "", "spoken_languages": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=api" ], "speaker": "Dr Te-Chun Wang (EPFL)", "organizer": " Xue-Mei Li", "contact": "Xue-Mei Li", "is_internal": "False", "theme": "", "vulgarization": { "id": 3, "fr_label": "Expert", "en_label": "Expert" }, "registration": { "id": 3, "fr_label": "Entrée libre", "en_label": "Free" }, "keywords": "Reading-Working Seminar", "file": null, "icalendar_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/117635/", "category": { "id": 1, "code": "CONF", "fr_label": "Conférences - Séminaires", "en_label": "Conferences - Seminars", "activated": true }, "academic_calendar_category": null, "domains": [], "mementos": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/403/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/7/?format=api" ] }, { "id": 69474, "title": "Honorary Lecture – Prof. Giovanni De Micheli", "slug": "honorary-lecture-prof-giovanni-de-micheli", "event_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/honorary-lecture-prof-giovanni-de-micheli", "visual_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/30983/200x112.jpg", "visual_large_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/30983/720x405.jpg", "visual_maxsize_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/30983/max-size.jpg", "lang": "en", "start_date": "2026-05-12", "end_date": "2026-05-12", "start_time": "18:00:00", "end_time": "21:00:00", "description": "Date: Tuesday 12 May 2026
\r\n
\r\nProgram: \r\n
\r\n\t
18:00-18:15: Introduction by Prof. Sabine Süsstrunk, Dean of IC School and Prof. Adrian Ionescu, Dean of STI School.
\r\n\t
18:15-19:00: Honorary Lecture by Prof. Giovanni De Micheli
\r\n\t
19:00-19:10: Q & A
\r\n\t
19:10-19:20: Presentation of Honorary Diploma and Medal by Prof. Edouard Bugnion, Vice President for Innovation and Impact.
\r\n\t
19:20-19:30: Thank you and closing - Prof. Sabine Süsstrunk and Prof. Adrian Ionescu.
\r\n\t
19:30-21:00: Apéritif in the CO 2 - Hall 2nd floor
\r\n
\r\nLocation: CO 2
\r\n
\r\nRegistration: click here
\r\n
\r\n***********************************************************
\r\n
\r\nProfessor Giovanni De Micheli
\r\n
\r\nCarrying the Torch
\r\n
\r\nAbstract
\r\nFrom my perspective as a researcher and educator, the torch represents the message that I carry and will pass on to a new generation of scientists and engineers. The interaction and networking with the community is essential to our activity: indeed, we teach to and learn from each other. The circle symbolizes the flow of information among peers as well as a paradigm where crossbreeding of ideas and methods is key to scientific advances. This message will be portrayed with examples from my scientific career and a vision of the future.
\r\n
\r\nAbout the speaker
\r\nGiovanni De Micheli is currently the Scientific Director of the EcoCloud center at EPFL. Alongside a 'plurality of time', we are interested in the 'plurality of space'. Rather than transparency, it is the arrangement of different worlds face-to-face or side-by-side that creates this impression of density and richness in relationships.
\r\n
\r\nTo craft sustainable development, we believe that, alongside a body of fundamental knowledge, a spirit can be cultivated through tireless attempts, including failure, to develop a 'knowledge of the hand' capable of finding new forms of expression. The countless experiences that we have accumulated at MANSLAB over the past 15 years can undoubtedly be best recounted in the form of anecdotes. An anecdote is a historical detail or a characteristic of customs or character that becomes a short, entertaining story evoking emotions such as laughter or horror.
\r\n
\r\nThe students’ work that I am about to present illustrates certain tested, refined and proven principles, such as the indestructible link between ideas and the hand through the slow and joyful acquisition of knowledge; the economy of means to highlight the essential; errors and non-linearity as inspiring methods in the design process; and the cultivation of empirical, manual and physical knowledge that prioritises grasping sensory, supra-sensory and memory-based reality and is capable of creating new spaces. The launch of the book ANEKDOTA will take place at the same event.
\r\n
\r\nAbout the speaker:
\r\nMarco Bakker is born in Harlingen, Netherlands, in 1960. He first earned a degree in Civil Engineering from HTS Leeuwarden, before continuing his studies in Architecture and Urban Planning at Delft University of Technology, including spending a year abroad at EPFL. Following four years of experimentation in architecture and photography, he founded the firm Bakker & Blanc Architects (BABL) with Alexandre Blanc in 1992. At the same time, he worked as an assistant to Prof. Vincent Mangeat and visiting professor Kaschka Knapkiewicz at EPFL. From 2003 to 2009, he taught architectural design and theory at the BFH in Burgdorf. Following four years as visiting professors together with Alexandre Blanc, they were appointed associate professors at the EPFL Institute of Architecture within the 'MANSLAB, Laboratory of Spatial Manufacturing' chair from 2013 to 2025.
\r\n
\r\nHe also served on the Arts and Architecture Commission of the Canton of Bern and was a member of the editorial board of Werk-Bauen & Wohnen. He chaired the jury for the Swiss Pavilion at the Venice Biennale on behalf of Pro Helvetia. Marco Bakker also regularly participates in various photographic and editorial projects related to art and architecture.
\r\n ", "image_description": "", "creation_date": "2026-03-26T14:49:29", "last_modification_date": "2026-03-26T16:15:54", "link_label": "S'inscrire", "link_url": "http://shorturl.at/Zatib", "canceled": "False", "cancel_reason": "", "place_and_room": "SG 1138", "url_place_and_room": "https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==SG%201138", "url_online_room": "", "spoken_languages": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/1/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=api" ], "speaker": "Prof. Marco Bakker", "organizer": "IA - Gesualdo Casciana", "contact": "[email protected]", "is_internal": "False", "theme": "", "vulgarization": { "id": 2, "fr_label": "Public averti", "en_label": "Informed public" }, "registration": { "id": 1, "fr_label": "Sur inscription", "en_label": "Registration required" }, "keywords": "", "file": null, "icalendar_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/120198/", "category": { "id": 8, "code": "LI", "fr_label": "Leçons inaugurales - Leçons d'honneur", "en_label": "Inaugural lectures - Honorary Lecture", "activated": true }, "academic_calendar_category": null, "domains": [], "mementos": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/4/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/5/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/8/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/145/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/27/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/32/?format=api" ] }, { "id": 71223, "title": "How to Prepare Successful Grant Proposals: a course for Postdocs", "slug": "how-to-prepare-successful-grant-proposals-a-cou-12", "event_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/how-to-prepare-successful-grant-proposals-a-cou-12", "visual_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32587/200x112.jpg", "visual_large_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32587/720x405.jpg", "visual_maxsize_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32587/max-size.jpg", "lang": "en", "start_date": "2026-04-24", "end_date": "2026-04-24", "start_time": null, "end_time": null, "description": "The Research Office is offering a course for EPFL postdoctoral researchers and senior PhD students entitled “How to prepare successful grant proposals”.
\r\n
\r\nThis course will teach participants where to look for appropriate fellowship and research funding opportunities, the ins and outs of the application process itself, and how to prepare a written proposal. During the workshop, we will review and explain the main steps of a machine learning-based computer vision project, from problem definition to image acquisition, annotation, training, validation, and inference. We will illustrate these steps in a practical way, by building a real computer vision application together until we can run it live on a camera. Along the way, we will discuss important concepts (data drift, overfitting, data augmentation) and observe how they manifest themselves in practice. We will also share tips and tricks to help you tackle your own computer vision challenges.
\r\n
\r\nPrerequisites:
\r\nBasic familiarity with Python, image analysis, and machine learning concepts is desirable, but not strictly necessary.
\r\n
\r\nLevel:
\r\nBeginner / Intermediate
\r\n ", "image_description": "", "creation_date": "2026-01-30T11:40:06", "last_modification_date": "2026-01-30T11:40:06", "link_label": "Registration", "link_url": "https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc1NukuuzIzzMnbDZkfudvj1M7wDJY6JeWQKoQrcl1ZIVFcUw/viewform?usp=header", "canceled": "False", "cancel_reason": "", "place_and_room": "CE 1 711.2", "url_place_and_room": "https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==CE%201%20711.2", "url_online_room": "", "spoken_languages": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=api" ], "speaker": "Mallory Witwer", "organizer": "Center for Imaging", "contact": "Cecilia Carron", "is_internal": "False", "theme": "", "vulgarization": { "id": 1, "fr_label": "Tout public", "en_label": "General public" }, "registration": { "id": 1, "fr_label": "Sur inscription", "en_label": "Registration required" }, "keywords": "", "file": null, "icalendar_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/119528/", "category": { "id": 1, "code": "CONF", "fr_label": "Conférences - Séminaires", "en_label": "Conferences - Seminars", "activated": true }, "academic_calendar_category": null, "domains": [], "mementos": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/4/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/5/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/8/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/9/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/284/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/27/?format=api" ] }, { "id": 71120, "title": "IMX Colloquium - Domain walls in multiferroics and multiferroic domain walls", "slug": "imx-colloquium-domain-walls-in-multiferroics-and-2", "event_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/imx-colloquium-domain-walls-in-multiferroics-and-2", "visual_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32492/200x112.jpg", "visual_large_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32492/720x405.jpg", "visual_maxsize_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32492/max-size.jpg", "lang": "en", "start_date": "2026-04-20", "end_date": "2026-04-20", "start_time": "13:15:00", "end_time": "14:15:00", "description": "
A reason for the interest in multiferroics is that magnetic and electric orders do not simply exist side by side, but exhibit \"added value\" in the form of magnetoelectric interactions and functionalities between the ordered states. Likewise, in a ferroic material, regions with different orientation of the order parameter, the domains, do not simply exist side by side, but they exhibit new phases and properties in the domain walls. Because of their discontinuous, confined, and topological nature, domain walls exhibit functional states that are not possible in the bulk. Continuing this line of thought, one should expect domain walls in multiferroics to be a particularly rich source of novel phenomena. Here one must distinguish between (i) \"domain walls in multiferroics\", where only the ferroelectric (or magnetic) order is considered so that little is learned about the multiferroic state, and (ii) \"multiferroic domain walls\" where the ferroic phase coexistence of the wall itself is of interest. The latter are rarely studied, and I will discuss some of their intriguing features in my talk.
\r\n
\r\nBio: Professor Manfred Fiebig is known for his work in light-matter interaction in systems with strong electronic correlations. Advancements in surface engineering have enabled significant enhancement of boiling heat transfer. However, performance gains rarely transfer across conditions or geometries. Two challenges illustrate why: bubble nucleation behavior is poorly reproducible; and increasing nucleating density to raise the heat transfer coefficient typically lowers the system’s maximum achievable heat flux. This talk presents our efforts in addressing each challenge by identifying the governing mechanism and designing for it.
\r\nIn the first part, micro-engineered silicon surfaces isolate two governing length scales: the hydrodynamic boundary layer thickness, which controls nucleation stability through inter-site shielding, and the bubble departure diameter, which governs vapor removal after full activation. We experimentally show that nucleation stability responds to the former length scale (~0.24 mm); heat transfer in the activated regime responds to the latter length scale (~2.5 mm).
\r\nThe second study addresses the high-heat-flux limit, where large vapor structures block liquid return. Capillary wicking through copper inverse opals (~10 μm pores) supplies liquid beneath the vapor. Crucially, the pore cavities are themselves the nucleation sites, so wicking capacity and nucleation density derive from the same structure. Further, CuO nanograss on the pore walls suppresses vapor penetration into the porous layer, enabling thicker structures and greater capillary head. The result is simultaneous enhancement of heat transfer coefficients and maximum heat fluxes.
\r\nTogether, the two works show that mechanism-targeted surface design yields gains that empirical topography optimization does not. They point toward a broader design principle: that nucleation and interfacial transport, treated as controllable rather than given, offer a promising path to engineering phase change processes across applications.
\r\n
\r\nhttps://dx.doi.org/10.1021/acsami.9b20520?ref=pdf
\r\nhttps://doi.org/10.1038/s41467-019-10209-w
\r\n
\r\nBio: Zhengmao Lu is a Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at EPFL.
