This talk explores how music-driven conversational systems can bridge the gap between algorithmic recommendation and psychological intervention. The journey begins with establishing a foundation of trust through user-centric exploration. Using conversational music recommenders as a case study, I will discuss how critiquing strategies—such as progressive and cascading suggestions—shape user perceptions of helpfulness and serendipity. However, because trust is personal, I demonstrate how individual traits, including personality and trust propensity, dictate whether a user thrives under system-led or user-led initiatives.
\r\nBuilding on this rapport, the talk examines how these interfaces transition from suggesting songs to fostering psychological well-being. I will illustrate how music acts as a catalyst for self-awareness, using agents to guide users through emotional resonance and self-reflection. Furthermore, I will share findings on the role of generative AI in music-based reminiscence for older adults, where adaptive dialogue helps overcome cognitive barriers to memory recall. Collectively, these studies provide a roadmap for designing AI that moves beyond the playlist, transforming music-based chatbots into sustained partners for emotional and psychological health.
\r\n
\r\nBio
\r\nProfessor Li Chen is currently a Full Professor and Associate Head (Research) in the Department of Computer Science at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU). In artificial intelligence, we frame this as lifelong learning: autonomous agents that continue to adapt after deployment as they encounter new tasks and environments. In this talk, I will argue that successful lifelong learning agents require a form of introspection: they must be able to reason about the scope and limits of their own knowledge. This self-knowledge allows an agent to answer three fundamental questions. What do I know? When can I reuse what I know? And what do I still need to learn? I will present recent work from my group showing how ideas from interpretability and explainability can surface the knowledge needed to answer these questions. I will first show how learned representations can be used to identify when inputs are novel, enabling out-of-distribution detection. Then, I will discuss how this can be built upon to give agents a way to distinguish between situations where prior knowledge can be safely reused and situations where new learning is needed. Together, this work shows that interpretability is not only a tool for transparency, but a mechanism for building agents that recognize, reuse, and acquire knowledge over time.
\r\n
\r\nBio
\r\nJoseph Campbell is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Purdue University, where he leads the Collaborative AI for Machines and People Lab. This talk explores breakthroughs in material design and architecture leveraging OMIECs for highly sensitive, low-power applications like organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs). As an example, I will present the structure-property relationships enabling dual transport and introduce a side-chain engineering approach using perylene diimide trimers (hPDI). This transformation enhances both ionic and electronic conductivity, enabling stable, high-transconductance n-type OECTs. Another example that will be discussed is conjugated polyelectrolytes, in particular PCPDTBTSO3-K, or commonly known as CPE-K. This conjugated polyelectrolyte exhibits two-way coupling of ionic and electronic conductivity, which allows for reversible electrochemical doping, enabling dual-mode transistors and high-performance solid-state supercapacitors. I will also demonstrate that OMIECs provide a promising platform for unconventional flexible substrates. Using wet-chemical processing, we can pattern active channels on flexible polyimide or low-cost PCB substrates for dense biosensing arrays. Finally, I will highlight a pathway toward \"green,\" self-powered wearable electronics combining molecular semiconductor advances with flexible processing techniques.
\r\n
\r\nBio: Dr. Nguyen Dang Tung is an Assistant Professor at the College of Engineering and Computer Science at VinUniversity and serves as the Director of Career Service and Industry for the College. Since joining the university in August 2023, he has led the Integrated Electronics group (https://www.intorlab.com.vn) which develops devices and manufacturing technologies using organic materials to address environmental and societal challenges. Currently, the group focuses on developing multifunctional fibers and organic electrochemical devices. Notably, the group established the first thermal drawing tower for research in Vietnam and is pioneering the use of AI for materials research. Prior to VinUniversity, Dr. Nguyen-Dang studied and worked at Ecole Polytechnique of Paris (B.A. and M.Sc. in Materials Science), EPFL (PhD, Materials Science), Saint-Gobain Company (Research Engineer) and UCSB (in CPOS). His major scientific contributions include a method for creating micro- and nano-patterns on fibers and textiles, a framework for the conservation of shape during the design of functional fibers (at EPFL), and the development of the first dual-mode organic transistors—realized 50 years after the invention of their inorganic counterparts (at UCSB). For his research, Dr. Nguyen-Dang has received E-MRS Student Award (France), SNSF Fellowship (Switzerland) and Otis Williams Fellowship (U.S.A.)
\r\n
\r\nVinUniversity (https://vinuni.edu.vn) is an English-medium, non-profit university located in Hanoi, Vietnam.
