Three scientists discuss the challenges of space research, the latest discoveries, and imaginary worlds.
\r\n
\r\nDidier Queloz, winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics for the discovery of exoplanets, speaks with Camille Bonvin, a cosmologist, and Violaine Sautter, a planetary geologist and member of NASA’s Curiosity and Perseverance missions. The conversation, centered around a thermos, camping mugs, and a picnic, draws a connection to Ray Bradbury’s short story A Million-Year Picnic (1946), part of his *The Martian Chronicles*: a family must leave Earth and finds its own reflection while searching for Martians.
\r\n
\r\nEven today, the question remains: What do we learn about ourselves when we look at Mars? What kind of life—past or future—are we searching for in space? This film is the result of a collaborative, interdisciplinary creative process that took place at the Théâtre Vidy-Lausanne in 2024.
\r\n
\r\nAFTER THE SCREENING:
\r\nFollowing the screening, there will be a discussion between director Pauline Julier and Eric Vautrin, playwright at the Vidy Theater.
\r\n
\r\n---
\r\nBiography of Pauline Julier
\r\nPauline Julier (b. 1981, Geneva) is an artist and filmmaker whose practice explores the connections humans forge with the world around them through stories, rituals, knowledge, and images. Weaving together documentary, theoretical, and fictional elements, her films and installations reflect the complexity of human relationships with their environments and foster a dialogue between science and myth to renew our perspective on the world.
\r\n
\r\nHis works have been exhibited at major contemporary art centers, institutions, and festivals around the world, including the Centre Pompidou (Paris), the IAC (Villeurbanne), the Loop Festival (Barcelona), Visions du Réel (Nyon), Wiels (Brussels), the Centre d’Art Contemporain (Geneva), the ZKM (Karlsruhe), Tokyo Wonder Site, the Museum of Modern Art (Tanzania), the Palazzo Grassi (Venice), as well as in New York, Madrid, Berlin, Zagreb, the TIFF Cinematheque (Toronto), and the Pera Museum (Istanbul).
\r\n
\r\nA two-time recipient of the Swiss Art Prize (2010, 2021) and the “Mondes Nouveaux” grant from the French Ministry of Culture (2022), her solo exhibition *Naturalis Historia* toured internationally after its opening at the Swiss Cultural Center in Paris (2017). She presented a major solo exhibition at the Aargauer Kunsthaus in 2024 and is currently completing her first feature-length fiction film, *Les Indes*, scheduled for release in the fall of 2026.
\r\n \r\n
\r\n
© 2026 EPFL, Laura Persat
\r\n
\r\n
", "image_description": "", "creation_date": "2026-09-03T16:18:02", "last_modification_date": "2026-09-28T10:49:06", "link_label": "Programme complet des Culturelles", "link_url": "https://www.epfl.ch/campus/art-culture/fr/les-culturelles/les-culturelles-dautomne-2026/", "canceled": "False", "cancel_reason": "", "place_and_room": "Forum Rolex", "url_place_and_room": "https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==RLC%20E1%20240", "url_online_room": "", "spoken_languages": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/1/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=api" ], "speaker": "Pauline Julier, artiste et cinéaste & Eric Vautrin, dramaturge au théâtre de Vidy", "organizer": "Festival Les Culturelles (Pôle Culture VPI)", "contact": "Véronique Mauron Layaz", "is_internal": "False", "theme": "", "vulgarization": { "id": 1, "fr_label": "Tout public", "en_label": "General public" }, "registration": { "id": 3, "fr_label": "Entrée libre", "en_label": "Free" }, "keywords": "film, cosmologie, science-fiction", "file": null, "icalendar_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/121699/", "category": { "id": 9, "code": "MANIF", "fr_label": "Événements festifs et culturels", "en_label": "Cultural events", "activated": true }, "academic_calendar_category": null, "domains": [], "mementos": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/2/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/5/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/8/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/21/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/22/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/79/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/145/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/179/?format=api" ] }, { "id": 72451, "title": "L'Affaire des Méga-constellations", "slug": "l-affaire-des-mega-constellations", "event_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/l-affaire-des-mega-constellations", "visual_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33699/200x112.jpg", "visual_large_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33699/720x405.jpg", "visual_maxsize_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33699/max-size.jpg", "lang": "en", "start_date": "2026-11-06", "end_date": "2026-11-06", "start_time": "20:00:00", "end_time": "22:00:00", "description": "L'espace s'invite au tribunal!
