"description": "
\r\nDr. Beat Frey, Dr. Joel Rüthi, Dr. Ivano Brunner, Beat Stierli
\r\n
\r\nEléments biographiques
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n>>> Site web de l'artiste Rahel Oberhummer
\r\n
\r\nVernissage le jeudi 7 mai 2026 à 18 :30
\r\nExposition visible jusqu’au 11 octobre 2026
\r\nHall du RLC / entrée libre
\r\n
\r\nImage : Dioszegia patagonica 001, Pochonia/Metacordyceps chlamydosporia 205, Pseudogymnoascus pannorum 511, Potato Dextrose Agar with sepia ink, 2022.
",

Robots are capable of assembling, analysing, experimenting and learning from their mistakes. Could they take on construction work without replacing human labour? Research carried out by the CRCL – Lab for Creative Computation at EPFL explores a form of collaboration between humans and machines that departs from the traditional promise of automation. It opens the way to more inclusive building sites and non-standardised, more environmentally friendly architecture that goes beyond the mere logic of replacement and productivity.
\r\n
\r\nAn exhibition produced in collaboration with the CRCL – Lab for Creative Computation, led by Stefana Parascho",

The project aims to preserve and promote the festival’s heritage, with the goal of rekindling younger generations’ interest in classical music.
\r\n
\r\nA pioneer since 1994, the Verbier Festival is the first festival in the world to have recorded all of its concerts. This exceptional collection now includes 3,000 hours of audio recordings, more than 1,000 hours of video, 12,000 historical photographs, archival documents, and a collection of annotated sheet music. It serves as a unique resource for research, innovation, and cultural transmission. As part of this collaboration, EPFL students are invited—upon registration and following a selection process—to participate in a master class during which they will draw on part of this heritage to create a musical work, which they will then present to an audience and a jury.
\r\n
\r\n---
\r\nPartners: Claude Latour Foundation, Verbier Festival, CHC Platform—Cultural Heritage & Conservation at EPFL, UNIL, Montreux Jazz Café, NAGRA
\r\n
\r\n>>> Free admission; aperitif available with registration
\r\n \r\n
\r\n\r\n
© 2026 EPFL, Laura Persat
\r\n
",

The conversation, centered around a thermos, camping mugs, and a picnic, draws a connection to Ray Bradbury’s short story A Million-Year Picnic (1946), part of his *The Martian Chronicles*: a family must leave Earth and finds its own reflection while searching for Martians.
\r\n
\r\nEven today, the question remains: What do we learn about ourselves when we look at Mars? What kind of life—past or future—are we searching for in space? Played continuously by the ensemble throughout the piece, the motif evolves under Julian Sartorius’s direction as he adapts the instrumentation (adding, substituting, or removing objects or instruments).
\r\n
\r\nA journey through minimalism, repetition, musical progression, and a deluge of sound. The concert stems from an experiment in which the addition, removal, or modification of basic elements generates new content. Much like many scientific protocols, this method—here applied to music—suggests avenues of convergence between scientific and creative practices.
\r\n
\r\n
\r\nAt 7 p.m. that evening, as part of the opening reception for the installation NO/NC (Normally Open/Normally Closed), co-created with Archizoom, Julian Sartorius will give a solo concert.
\r\n---
\r\nBiography of Julian Sartorius
\r\nDrummer, percussionist, and artist Julian Sartorius shapes sounds into unique forms. His precise and rich rhythmic patterns are true explorations of the hidden sounds of found objects and prepared instruments, bridging the gap between organic timbres and the language of electronic music. Julian Sartorius has released numerous solo albums, created audiovisual works, collaborated with musicians, writers, and artists, and performed in everything from intimate venues to festival stages.
\r\n\r\n

\r\nTrained at the jazz schools in Bern and Lucerne under the guidance of musicians such as Fabian Kuratli, Pierre Favre, and Norbert Pfammatter, Julian Sartorius developed a unique musical approach at a very early age. Fascinated by small-scale variations, the interplay of tension and release, density, and vibration, he has created projects such as the 12-vinyl box set *Beat Diary* (Everest Records, 2012), comprising 365 rhythmic pieces accompanied by a book of photographs; the daily series of eight-second loops “Morphblog” (2013–2019); and “Depot,” an audiovisual installation for 16 speakers and 16 screens, presented at the Kunstmuseum in Thun. For his album “Hidden Tracks: Basel – Geneva” (Everest Records, 2017), Julian walked more than 200 kilometers with his drumsticks and recording equipment, playing and capturing a multitude of sounds and textures from objects he encountered along the way.
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
In recent years, Julian Sartorius has collaborated with numerous musicians, including Sophie Hunger, Sylvie Courvoisier, Gyda Valtysdottir, Dimlite, Shahzad Ismaily, and Dan Carey. His instantly recognizable percussion work also appears on recent albums by Kate Tempest, Matthew Herbert, and James Zoo. Julian Sartorius has toured and performed in North and South America, Asia, and Europe, sharing the stage with artists such as Marc Ribot, Deerhoof, Faust, Jaki Liebezeit, and Arto Lindsay.
\r\n
\r\n---
\r\nUsinesonore
\r\nThe Usinesonore association shares its passion for music by promoting it through various activities in the Canton of Bern and beyond. It was previously invited to EPFL in 2017.
\r\nFounded in 2006 by Julien Annoni and Olivier Membrez, two young Bernese Jura natives passionate about contemporary music, the Usinesonore association organizes events centered on today’s music.
\r\n
\r\nThe association’s activities focus on three main areas: organizing the Usinesonore Festival, the Ensemble We Spoke, and organizing parallel events (traveling concerts, custom-designed events, outreach activities, etc.).
\r\n
\r\nEach event is shaped by careful consideration of how to share it with the audience.
\r\n
\r\nThis event will be followed by the opening of the installation NO/NC (Normally Open, Normally Closed) by the artists AATB, supported and organized in collaboration with Usinesonore and Pôle Culture (VPI).",

A mix of texts, live drawings (using water from Lake Geneva), and music turns this moment into a festive gathering.
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
---
\r\nThe Hydromondes Collective
\r\nFor the past two years, the Hydromondes collective has been developing a research-creation project on Lake Geneva as a living entity, engaging with scientists, managers, activists, and artists from the Lake Geneva region to attempt to paint a dynamic portrait of this lake on which we depend—particularly through the waters that flow through us. The collective employs sensory cartography, creates drawings and texts, and composes music. On June 12 and 13, 2026, the Lake Geneva Bioregional Assemblies took place at the Vidy Theater, during which Hydromondes brought together a myriad of Franco-Swiss collectives to create a cross-border community dedicated to the care of the waters.
\r\n
\r\nThe collaboration between the collective and Nathalia Capellini, a historian at the University of Lausanne (UNIL) and instructor in the EPFL’s SHS program, gave rise to the performance *Le Léman Cyborg*, presented on May 7, 2026, as part of the *Culturelles de printemps* festival. Nathalia Capellini’s course titled “Infrastructures” had fueled the project. This collaboration between the collective and the academic community will therefore continue for the Culturelles in October 2026, with a more participatory format—somewhere between an artistic presentation and a town hall meeting—in a playful atmosphere.
\r\n
\r\n>>> Free admission; light refreshments provided upon registration
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
© 2026 EPFL, Laura Persat
\r\n
\r\n
",
