This lecture series examines the often-invisible forces that shape architectural production—the clients who commission, the contractors who build, and the capital flows that determine what gets realized. While architects are trained to focus on design, the political economy of construction is largely absent from architectural education—sustaining a disciplinary insularity that obscures architecture's deep entanglement with capital, labor, and power. Yet building is fundamentally contingent: dependent on forces beyond the designer's reach, shaped by actors whose decisions constrain and enable architecture far more than design intentions. The series invites scholars and practitioners whose research illuminates these dependencies: the bureaucratization of architectural practice through corporate management systems, the client as a Mephistophelean figure key to the attainment of projects, the contractor as a decisive agent in determining how architecture is produced, and the entanglement of real estate development, finance, building, and urban form. By exposing the structural conditions of construction's political economy, we seek not to lament architecture's lack of autonomy but to work productively within its contingencies—essential groundwork for reimagining how practice might be organized otherwise.
\r\n
\r\nDavide Spina (University of Hong Kong, online) Spina's award-winning dissertation examined the Vatican-controlled real estate developer and contractor SGI (Società Generale Immobiliare), which emerged as a major force in postwar Italy's reconstruction. His research on what journalist Antonio Cederna called \"the Leviathan\" reveals how SGI coordinated 10,000 employees, bureaucratized architectural production, exploited planning regulations, and delivered schemes from residential developments to industrial infrastructure. Currently working on real estate development in 1960s-70s Hong Kong, Spina examines how developers and contractors shape architectural culture through corporate management systems.
\r\n
", "image_description": "", "creation_date": "2026-02-16T15:20:01", "last_modification_date": "2026-02-23T14:42:31", "link_label": "", "link_url": "", "canceled": "False", "cancel_reason": "", "place_and_room": "AAC 1 14", "url_place_and_room": "https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==AAC%201%2014", "url_online_room": "https://epfl.zoom.us/j/67118003322?pwd=Rxn0N5RNHdUNwg0HhBRkRZzWPm8UlX.1", "spoken_languages": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=api" ], "speaker": "Davide Spina ", "organizer": "RIOT ", "contact": "Elif Erez Henderson / Antoine Iweins / Nathalie Marj ", "is_internal": "False", "theme": "", "vulgarization": { "id": 2, "fr_label": "Public averti", "en_label": "Informed public" }, "registration": { "id": 3, "fr_label": "Entrée libre", "en_label": "Free" }, "keywords": "Architecture, Clients, Contractors, Capital", "file": null, "icalendar_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/119744/", "category": { "id": 1, "code": "CONF", "fr_label": "Conférences - Séminaires", "en_label": "Conferences - Seminars", "activated": true }, "academic_calendar_category": null, "domains": [], "mementos": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/32/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/4/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=api" ] }, { "id": 71382, "title": "LASUR Seminar - Manfred Max Bergman: \"Methodological Mapping of the Space-Mobility Research Nexus\"", "slug": "lasur-seminar-manfred-max-bergman-methodological-m", "event_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/lasur-seminar-manfred-max-bergman-methodological-m", "visual_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32728/200x112.jpg", "visual_large_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32728/720x405.jpg", "visual_maxsize_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32728/max-size.jpg", "lang": "en", "start_date": "2026-04-14", "end_date": "2026-04-14", "start_time": "12:15:00", "end_time": "13:45:00", "description": "
This presentation treats space and mobility as inseparable, where space is produced through movement, coordination, and pause, while mobility is always spatially formatted by routes, nodes, and boundaries. Their intersection is therefore not an overlap but a relational field in which placement and movement continuously reify one another. This perspective invites complex mixed methods approaches based on methodological mapping across different forms of evidence, which can show how movements cluster or stretch, while narrative interviews, participatory mapping, and field observation can uncover how actors interpret routes, obstacles, and anchors in everyday life. The aim is not merely conventional triangulation, but conceptual integration: Using different methods to move between patterns in systems and interpretation of experience. Alongside a 'plurality of time', we are interested in the 'plurality of space'. Rather than transparency, it is the arrangement of different worlds face-to-face or side-by-side that creates this impression of density and richness in relationships.
\r\n
\r\nTo craft sustainable development, we believe that, alongside a body of fundamental knowledge, a spirit can be cultivated through tireless attempts, including failure, to develop a 'knowledge of the hand' capable of finding new forms of expression. The countless experiences that we have accumulated at MANSLAB over the past 15 years can undoubtedly be best recounted in the form of anecdotes. An anecdote is a historical detail or a characteristic of customs or character that becomes a short, entertaining story evoking emotions such as laughter or horror.
\r\n
\r\nThe students’ work that I am about to present illustrates certain tested, refined and proven principles, such as the indestructible link between ideas and the hand through the slow and joyful acquisition of knowledge; the economy of means to highlight the essential; errors and non-linearity as inspiring methods in the design process; and the cultivation of empirical, manual and physical knowledge that prioritises grasping sensory, supra-sensory and memory-based reality and is capable of creating new spaces. The launch of the book ANEKDOTA will take place at the same event.
\r\n
\r\nAbout the speaker:
\r\nMarco Bakker is born in Harlingen, Netherlands, in 1960. He first earned a degree in Civil Engineering from HTS Leeuwarden, before continuing his studies in Architecture and Urban Planning at Delft University of Technology, including spending a year abroad at EPFL. Following four years of experimentation in architecture and photography, he founded the firm Bakker & Blanc Architects (BABL) with Alexandre Blanc in 1992. At the same time, he worked as an assistant to Prof. Vincent Mangeat and visiting professor Kaschka Knapkiewicz at EPFL. From 2003 to 2009, he taught architectural design and theory at the BFH in Burgdorf. Following four years as visiting professors together with Alexandre Blanc, they were appointed associate professors at the EPFL Institute of Architecture within the 'MANSLAB, Laboratory of Spatial Manufacturing' chair from 2013 to 2025.
\r\n
\r\nHe also served on the Arts and Architecture Commission of the Canton of Bern and was a member of the editorial board of Werk-Bauen & Wohnen. He chaired the jury for the Swiss Pavilion at the Venice Biennale on behalf of Pro Helvetia. Marco Bakker also regularly participates in various photographic and editorial projects related to art and architecture.
\r\n ", "image_description": "", "creation_date": "2026-03-26T14:49:29", "last_modification_date": "2026-03-26T16:15:54", "link_label": "S'inscrire", "link_url": "http://shorturl.at/Zatib", "canceled": "False", "cancel_reason": "", "place_and_room": "SG 1138", "url_place_and_room": "https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==SG%201138", "url_online_room": "", "spoken_languages": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/1/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=api" ], "speaker": "Prof. Marco Bakker", "organizer": "IA - Gesualdo Casciana", "contact": "[email protected]", "is_internal": "False", "theme": "", "vulgarization": { "id": 2, "fr_label": "Public averti", "en_label": "Informed public" }, "registration": { "id": 1, "fr_label": "Sur inscription", "en_label": "Registration required" }, "keywords": "", "file": null, "icalendar_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/120198/", "category": { "id": 8, "code": "LI", "fr_label": "Leçons inaugurales - Leçons d'honneur", "en_label": "Inaugural lectures - Honorary Lecture", "activated": true }, "academic_calendar_category": null, "domains": [], "mementos": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/4/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/5/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/8/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/145/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/27/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/32/?format=api" ] }, { "id": 71066, "title": "School Lecture Series: Joud Beaudoin, Lorraine Beaudoin / EPFL Architecture", "slug": "school-lecture-series-joud-beaudoin-lorraine-beaud", "event_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/school-lecture-series-joud-beaudoin-lorraine-beaud", "visual_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32444/200x112.jpg", "visual_large_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32444/720x405.jpg", "visual_maxsize_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32444/max-size.jpg", "lang": "en", "start_date": "2026-05-12", "end_date": "2026-05-12", "start_time": "19:00:00", "end_time": "20:30:00", "description": "JOUD BEAUDOIN, LORRAINE BEAUDOIN
\r\nMaison de quartier des Plaines du loup
\r\n
\r\nLocated in the Parc du loup, on the edge of a newly built neighborhood, the community center is designed according to the principle of “houses within a house”: the various programmatic units are distributed across four distinct volumes, fragmenting the building and giving it a human scale and porosity to its environment. Between them lies a fluid interstitial space that lends itself to encounters and exchanges, thanks to a double-height space that connects the two levels.
