We use it as a scientific tool to study how models acquire specialized skills and how far those skills transfer. We speedrun SWE-bench by training coding agents from scratch on demonstrations from stronger models. With about $1,000 of training compute, we reach a 25% solve rate, outperforming GPT-4o. Compared to models with extensive pre-training, our speedrun models solve largely the same SWE-bench problems, and generalize about as well to new bugs and codebases. What, then, does pre-training buy for SWE-bench? Our experiments suggest a one-student hypothesis: pre-training helps a student imitate its teacher, but at matched imitation loss, pre-training choices barely matter. We stress-test this hypothesis by comparing a model trained on the web against a “vintage\" one trained only pre-1931 documents. Up to the SWE-bench scores we reach, pre-training is interchangeable with specialization data. We release nanoswe as an open project for studying specialization through speedrunning.
\r\n
\r\nBio
\r\nRicardo Olmedo is a final-year PhD student at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in Tübingen and a Google PhD Fellow. Advised by Moritz Hardt and Bernhard Schölkopf, he works on language model benchmarking and specialization. His research has earned three oral presentations at ICLR and NeurIPS. Most recently, he spent spring and summer 2026 visiting Sanmi Koyejo at Stanford University.
",

            "description": "
Generative AI has become a part of students' everyday working life. If used without guidance, GenAI can cause over-reliance and leave students with a distorted sense of what they have actually learned. Most research and practice have focused on how we can scaffold students' GenAI use, for example through prompts, guardrails, or redesigned tasks. This talk asks a simpler question that has received far less attention. When should students be allowed to use AI so that it helps their learning?
\r\n
\r\nIn this lunch&LEARN session, Janne Rotter turns to a question that's been largely overlooked: not how, but when should students be allowed to use AI for it to actually support learning? Janne will present findings from a study of 105 university students comparing three conditions: unrestricted AI access, no access at all, and a \"timed\" condition where students could only turn to AI after first attempting the task on their own.
\r\n
\r\nDrawing on multiple pedagogical theories to build a decision rule for when access should open up, the results show that students in the timed condition outperformed those with unrestricted access on an objective post-test, and had a more accurate sense of their own understanding, without an explicit metacognitive prompting. Compared to withholding AI entirely, timed access also seemed to reduce task errors and time spent on task.
\r\n
\r\nJoin us to learn more about the topic and engage in further discussion.
\r\n
",

The robot must perceive a ball travelling at high speed, estimate its position and spin, predict its trajectory, decide how to respond, and execute a precise motion, all while interacting with an intelligent and unpredictable opponent.
\r\nIn this talk, I will present Project ACE, an autonomous table tennis robot developed at Sony AI that progressed from learning basic racket skills to competing with elite human players. I will discuss the complete system behind this progression: high-speed visual perception, reinforcement learning, simulation, robot control, and the iterative sim-to-real process that enabled policies trained in simulation to perform on a real robot. Beyond table tennis, ACE provides a case study in what it takes to move from impressive robotic demonstrations to robust physical intelligence. I will share some of the lessons we learned about combining learning with control, using real-world failures to improve simulation, and designing AI systems that can adapt and act under the speed, uncertainty, and constraints of the physical world.
\r\n
\r\nBio
\r\nMireille El Gheche is a Lead Research Scientist at SoftBank Robotics, working at the intersection of artificial intelligence and robotics. Her expertise spans reinforcement learning, computer vision and perception, simulation, optimization, and real-world robotic systems, with a strong focus on translating research advances into robust physical systems.
\r\nPrior to joining SoftBank Robotics, Mireille was a Staff Research Scientist at Sony AI in Zurich, where she led research on Project ACE, an autonomous table tennis robot developed to compete with elite and professional human players. Before joining Sony AI, Mireille conducted academic research at EPFL and the University of Bordeaux, working across computer vision, and applied AI, including applications in medical AI. Her broader research interests lie in physical AI and intelligent robotic systems that can perceive, learn, adapt, and act in complex real-world environments.
\r\n ",

            "description": "
This workshop is for staff and researchers working in NGOs and non-profits who aim to bring AI into their workflows with an ethical, careful approach. Join us for a hands-on morning of using and deploying the flagship model of the Swiss AI Initiative, learn first hand from the engineers and scientists working on Apertus.
\r\n
\r\nThe workshop runs from 9:30 to 12:30 at the EPFL AI Center Lounge in Lausanne. Doors open at 9:00.
\r\n
\r\nBackground: Apertus is a fully open large language model built in Switzerland, which is fully reproducible and can run on your own infrastructure. As a Foundation Model, it has already been adapted to specific contexts through post-training and fine-tuning processes. In addition to open access at all Swiss academic institutions, a growing number of Swiss and international commercial providers support Apertus for production deployment.
\r\n
\r\nThis workshop is also designed as a two-way conversation: alongside learning how to use and deploy Apertus, we want to hear how your organization is already working with AI, and where today's tools still fall short for you. We would like to hear about the languages, legal contexts, and use cases you operate in. This input will give us the opportunity to prioritize improvements for non-profit organizations on the Apertus roadmap.
\r\n
\r\nAt this workshop, you will have the chance to:\r\n

\r\n\t
See how Apertus, a fully open, Swiss-built LLM, can be deployed on your own infrastructure
\r\n\t
Get hands-on experience using the technology itself, not just a description of it
\r\n\t
Tell the team building Apertus where it's falling short for your work, and help shape where it goes next
\r\n
\r\nThe morning will include:\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
An introduction to Apertus: what it is, how it works, and why self-hosting is possible
\r\n\t
A live walkthrough of deploying Apertus on your own infrastructure
\r\n\t
Hands-on exercises applying Apertus to tasks relevant to your organization
\r\n
\r\nExact schedule will be sent to participants closer to the event.
\r\n
\r\n! REGISTRATION REQUIRED !",

            "description": "
How social robots look, behave, and offer support should reflect the people and environments they encounter. Drawing on studies with older adults in rural Indiana and urban Houston, this talk examines how individual needs, preferences, everyday surroundings, and care relationships can inform the physical forms and interaction styles of future social robots.
\r\n
\r\nThrough participatory design, observations, and interviews, I center older adults’ perspectives on meaningful support, acceptable interaction, and personal boundaries. Encounters with robot companions have brought moments of enjoyment, surprise, and support, while revealing challenges involving communication, expectations, privacy, and control. I explore how embodiment, movement, voice, and interaction pacing shape these experiences, and how caregivers can support engagement while preserving older adults’ choices and dignity.
\r\n
\r\nThese findings inform design requirements for robots that people can understand, guide, and adjust as their circumstances change. I connect them to opportunities for adaptive robot behavior, accessible interaction, and shared control, including how robots might recognize when assistance is welcome and make their actions easier to interpret or interrupt. The talk positions older adults as active contributors to robotics research, whose lived expertise can shape both future robot companions and the broader systems of support surrounding them.
\r\n
\r\n
\r\nBiography
\r\nChorong Park, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor and Presidential Frontier Faculty at the University of Houston’s Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and Design, where she leads the Empathetic Lifespan AI & Robotics for Aging (ELARA) Lab. Her research connects human–robot interaction, human-centered AI, and participatory design to develop social robots and supportive technologies with older adults and caregivers.
\r\n
\r\nDrawing on studies in rural Indiana and urban Houston, she investigates how robots’ physical forms and interactions can fit older adults’ needs, surroundings, and everyday lives. Her work centers older adults’ perspectives on companionship, support, privacy, personal boundaries, and dignity, including how caregiver involvement can preserve individual choice and control.
\r\n
\r\nHer research is informed by more than 500 hours of volunteer technology support with older adults and people with disabilities and has appeared at ACM CHI, ACM ASSETS, and IEEE robotics venues.
