cinq architectes ° cinq pays ° trois projets, public conférences
For this series of lectures, 5 different architects from 5 different European countries were asked to give an insight into their work practice. Each office will present 3 projects in detail from the first sketch to the final construction plans. One of the presented projects will be the office’s very first building, which will help answer the question of how to start an architectural office. The other two projects will demonstrate the individual offices’ different signatures and the different strategies they pursue to realize architectural ideas in the specific local context. The lectures will illustrate an individual practical approach to architecture and provide an overview of the contemporary architectural trends in Europe.

Felix Claus
Claus en Kaan Architecten, Amsterdam/Rotterdam
Claus en Kaan Architecten was founded in Amsterdam in 1988 by Felix Claus and Kees Kaan. Unlike many of their Dutch colleagues they always avoided purely sensational architecture, having no desire to surprise at all costs, preferring instead to pursue an ordinariness that is both familiar and self-evident. They realized a number of highly acclaimed projects of different scales, such as the house in Haarlemmerbuurt, Amsterdam (1990), the Urban Design for IJburg Amsterdam (2001) or the transformation of the former bank building “De   Bazel” into the Municipal Archives of Amsterdam (2007). They have recently won the competition for the construction of the Supreme Court of the Netherlands, The Hague.
