Conserved from flies to zebrafish, pre-death increased intestinal permeability, a.k.a. Smurf phenotype, permits the deconvolution of ageing, allowing the study of chronological and physiological ages separately. I will give an overview of the theoretical framework we developed thanks to this phenotype, the two-phase ageing model (2PAC) and its impact on the study of ageing and beyond
