For centuries engineers have saught inspirations from nature in designing their creations. Along with the immitation of biological forms I suggest that bio-inspired algorithms are a potent complement to engineering optimization. In this talk I will present a systematic framework for developing such algorithms based on diverse biological concepts. I will discuss bio-inspired algorithms in the context of their application to flow problems with an emphasis on self-propelled swimmers.
