The Branco Weiss Fellowship (Society in Science) is a postdoctoral program for exceptionally qualified young researchers. It consists of a personal research grant that enables the fellows to work on their projects in all disciplines, at an academic institution of their choice anywhere in the world, for up to 5 years.

The fellowship is international and transdisciplinary in nature. Up to 10 fellowships are awarded each year.

Mainstream research projects that could also be funded by other scientific organizations are NOT supported.

Candidates must have a record of outstanding scientific achievement.

The proposal must show a willingness to engage in a dialogue on relevant social, cultural, political or economic issues across the frontiers of the candidate’s particular discipline.

Who can apply:

  • You officially hold a PhD on January 15, 2025.
  • Your PhD was awarded after January 15, 2020 (exceptions: parental leave or inability to work due to illness or accident).
  • Assistant professors, lecturers and other faculty are NOT eligible.  

Funding & Duration: up to CHF 600K for 5 years (Pioneer phase: the first 2.5 years of research; Exploitation phase: the remaining 2.5 years).

For what: all research-related costs (i.e. salary and/or equipment, travel expenses, consumables, personnel, etc.) and 10% overheads.

Note: Branco Weiss Fellows are encouraged to seek faculty positions during their exploitation phase. Assuming an academic position will not result in termination of the fellowship.

Timeline:
  • January 15, 2025, 5 p.m. CET: final deadline for applications via the online form
  • May 2025: notification and invitation for a personal interview sent to final selection of candidates; notification sent to candidates whose application has been rejected
  • June 2025: candidates interviewed by a panel in Zurich, Switzerland; final selection of fellows
  • October 1 to December 31, 2025: fellows commence research projects
