Social ontology is concerned with which claims to reality can be sustained for the elements said to compose the social order – and on what basis. It provides a meta-theoretical clarification of the nature of the components with which the social sciences deal, suggests explanatory approaches for their analysis, explores appropriate methods for their study and furnishes insights into how social influence can be exerted and social transformation be envisaged.
The Centre d’Ontologie Sociale - established at EPFL in 2011 as part of the College of Humanities - is launching a series of seminars on social ontology as broadly defined, the Brownbag Ontology Workshop in Lausanne (BOWL). Guest-speakers drawn will discuss their latest research in a spirit of intellectual exchange and openness. Attendance is open to all and should be of particular interest to researchers in the social sciences, including doctoral students.
Meetings are scheduled at lunchtime (12h15-13h45 in room GCB3 30) on the last Wednesday of the month during term-time. A light meal will be provided.
Forthcoming dates for 2011/12: Wednesdays 29th February, 28th March, 25th April and 30th May.
Our opening session on 29th February will feature Prof. Fabrizio Sabelli who will talk on social movements and contemporary epistemological changes.
If you are interested, please contact Dr Ismaël Al-Amoudi: [email protected] – http://cdh.epfl.ch/ontologie
