There are examples showing that the mod p cohomology ring of a finite group does not determine its isomorphism type. In particular, the mod p
cohomology ring of the classifying space of a finite group does not determine its homotopy type. We show some families of p-groups for which
the mod p cohomology ring decorated with Bockstein s.s. or Massey products does determine its homotopy type. Time permitting, we explain some
applications to the existence of complements and the modular isomorphism problem.
