The seminar will present an overview of the research activities performed in the last years on composite structures. In the first part, the research on buckling and post-buckling behavior of composite structures will be summarized. This research was conducted in four EU funded projects in the past 12 years, covering analytical, numerical and experimental aspects. The recent results obtained during the COCOMAT project and the ongoing MAAXIMUS project will be presented. They indicate the possibility to allow composite panels to work in the post-buckling field during the operative life, moving up the design ultimate load near the collapse load in the next aircraft generation. In the second part, damage tolerance studies will be presented. In particular, the investigation performed on single stringer composite specimens, undergoing in collaboration with NASA Langley, will be shown, as well as the research on biaxial cyclic loading on impacted specimens performed at MIT. At the end, a short overview will be given on crash of aerospace and automotive composite structures, in part conducted in collaboration with Ferrari Formula One.
