The length of the shortest non-contractible curve - the systole - of a closed hyperbolic surface is at most logarithmic in the genus of the surface. In this talk I will speak about constructions of hyperbolic surfaces with systoles of logarithmic length and discuss their properties. Part of this is joint work with Alex Walker.
