Automatic control, mathematical programming, and software-driven-intelligence at large play an important role in the value proposition of the ABB group for its customers and this role is expected to grow as digital technologies become more pervasive. At the ABB Corporate Research Center in Baden-Dättwil, we work in this broad field to bring ideas for new features, solutions, and products from concepts on whiteboard drawings to prototypes and pilot projects running on actual installations. In this talk, I will cover, how we tackle challenges in applications from all domains of ABB activities encompassing, industry, infrastructure, and transportation by presenting some of our recent research projects.

Bio: Mehmet Mercangöz received his PhD degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara, USA in 2007 and has since then been with ABB Corporate Research Laboratory in Switzerland. Currently he is leading a research group working on control and optimization with a special focus on MPC. His research interests include plantwide control and optimization with applications in natural gas compression, electro-thermal energy storage systems, and grid integration of renewable energy sources.
