The discrete Hilbert-Einstein functional is a discrete-geometric analog of the total scalar cur-
vature. It was discovered by the physicist Tullio Regge in 1960, but the ideas go back to
Steiner, Schlaefli, and Minkowski. The variational properties of the discrete Hilbert-Einstein
functional are similar to those of its smooth counterpart. I will describe some applications to the rigidity of manifolds and polyhedra and formulate some open questions.
