Abstract:
Strategic responses to climate change encompass a range of human responses from mitigation and planned, proactive adaptation to climate interventions. Like climate change, the impacts and application of the responses scale and differentiate from the global to also local and subnational levels. My presentation looks at transdisciplinary co-production on strategic solutions to climate change in the light of two case studies on climate interventions with Arctic communities: co-production of scientific knowledge on Stratospheric Aerosol Injection in Finnish Lapland and co-design of ice sheet conservation in Greenland. More research on climate interventions and their impacts on local communities with the communities is needed for finding more locally acceptable, sustainable and just co-designs of the methods, for informing scientific inquiry by inclusive and equitable research, and for enabling informed decision-making and governance of climate action, including on climate interventions, in the future.

Biography:
Ilona Mettiäinen is an environmental social scientist and works as Researcher at the Arctic Centre of the University of Lapland, Finland. Her current research focuses on transdisciplinary co-production of knowledge with Arctic communities on climate change and pollution and co-designing strategic solutions to them, and on conditions for responsible and ethical research into climate interventions. Her science communications photograph exhibition “Nanoq – Imag(in)ing climate change” has been displayed in 14 venues since 2016 in Finland and abroad. In 2017, she traversed the North-West Passage onboard a Finnish icebreaker as a member of the Arctic 100 Expedition.
