Vegetation profoundly affects the form and evolution of rivers by dynamically affecting sediment transport and the selection of flow paths. We will review experimental and field evidence illustrating how vegetation interactions change braided rivers to single-thread ones, create self-assembled floodplains, and set channel size. We will also review evidence that these effects have been important in controlling river form through geologic time.
