In the process of architectural design, we engage in three fundamental acts. The act of embodiment becomes a tangible interpretation of context that gives physical form to an idea about inhabiting a site. Stratification allows us to superimpose and selectively integrate independent systems. We develop hierarchies and overlay strata of organization, program, structure, typologies, and realities that ultimately illuminate possibilities for the spatial expression of architecture. Finally, as a generator of ideas and a primary architectural endeavor, we idealize. By selectively excluding requirements regularly confronted in the practice of architecture, we can overcome the complexities of the “real world” and focus on formulating our fundamental interests in architecture and space.
