Learning through Making

Assemble is a multi-disciplinary collective working across architecture, design and art. Two of its founders, Amy Perkins and Maria Lisogorskaya, will present the 10 year journey of the practice through the lens of collective practice - their approach to projects, places and materials.

They will focus on housing in particular; reasserting a belief in ‘housing’ as an act, not simply a final product. They will explore the relationships between its various actors, from those whose day to day lives are spent living, working, cleaning, and repairing, to those whose seemingly detached decisions determine whether this physical fabric is demolished or renovated. Not forgetting the approach to materials, labour in manufacture and construction; and the disparate quality and care given to our physical surroundings - how we build our environments is of ongoing concern to the practice.

Assemble will be presented as an infrastructure for diverse interests and skills; a non hierarchical machine with, above all, an attitude of enquiry and a commitment to learning underpinning the practice.

Short bio:
Founded in 2010 to undertake a single self-built project, Assemble has since delivered a diverse and award-winning body of work, whilst retaining a democratic and co-operative working method that enables built, social and research-based work at a variety of scales, both making things and making things happen.

Amy Perkins has been teaching at the ETH Zürich with Studio Tom Emerson since 2018 and is editor of CARTHA magazine.

Maria Lisogorskaya is currently a guest professor at EPFL and her current projects include Lot 8 at the Luma Foundation in France and Material Institute in the US.
