Building Up: Rethinking How We Design Skyscrapers

As the world’s population shifts towards urban areas, space constraints have made vertical expansion increasingly attractive. The skyscraper is now ubiquitous, found in every region of the world. However, early examples of high-rise structures are beginning to show their age, raising concerns with the long-term durability and sustainability of this type of construction. Given the aging stock of existing structures and the accelerating rate of new development, it is clear that we cannot continue to build without regard for the effect it will have on future generations: we must reconsider the way we design tall buildings.
This presentation will discuss current high-rise structural design practices and their implications for the sustainability of skyscrapers. It will outline how we can address the environmental impacts of the construction industry through structural engineering solutions, with considerations including:
  • Extension of the service life of existing structures through monitoring and refined assessment techniques.
  • Investigation of novel building materials and characterization of their behaviour on a structural scale through experimental testing and numerical modelling.
  • Design of new structures in a way that prioritizes longevity, respecting both strength and serviceability limit states in the long-term.
  • Mitigation of end-of-life costs through the development of modular and reusable structural elements.
  • Collaboration with architects and owners to allow for potential changes in a building’s program over its lifespan, providing adaptability for future uses unanticipated at the time of design.

Short bio:
David Ruggiero is a Design Engineer at RJC Engineers in Toronto, Canada. Dr Ruggiero earned his BASc degree from the University of Toronto, and his PhD degree from the University of Toronto under a joint placement agreement with the Institute for Advanced Study of Pavia (IUSS), Italy, where he also worked as a postdoctoral researcher. His research has focussed on the mechanics of cyclic shear in reinforced concrete as well as performance-based seismic design and assessment. At RJC Engineers, Dr Ruggiero has been a structural designer for commercial and residential high-rise structures including CIBC Square, a new bank headquarters in downtown Toronto consisting of two 240 m tall towers, a transit terminal, and a 1 acre park over an active rail corridor. He is an Associate Member on the Technical Committee of CSA A23.3, the Canadian design standard for concrete structures.
