Modeling Urban Mobility-on-Demand Services with Large-Scale Trip Data

Urban Mobility-on-Demand (MoD) services, such as taxicabs, for-hire vehicles and micro-transit, intend to offer flexible point-to-point mobility solutions to urban commuters while minimizing road traffic. More recently, the urban MoD services have undergone rapid yet controversial growth and have been criticized for introducing excessive vacant trips and road congestion. This has led to a resurgence of interest in framing regulation policies and designing operation strategies for the efficiency and sustainability of urban MoD services.
In this talk, Dr Qian will present and analyze network models and trip data from MoD providers for diagnosing the efficiency of MoD services and developing effective operational strategies. Given the trip data, he will discuss how to quantify the optimal efficiency of MoD services and disclose their most recent impacts on urban traffic conditions. He will then introduce two effective operation models, the group ride and the demand-responsive transit, and their solution approaches to address emerging efficiency issues in the MoD industry. Finally, he will conclude his talk by discussing the ongoing work on infrastructure and operation preparations for integrating autonomous and electric vehicles into the management of future autonomous on-demand mobility.
