Data Rich Modelling Across the Scale: A Case Study with Soil

No matter at what scale one looks, modern environmental modelling is a data rich endeavour if we are building mathematical models that are truly scientifically relevant with as strong predictive power as possible. This is true when we model soil processes on the pore scale where models are validated using 3D data for pore scale structural information using X-ray Computed Tomography and 2D pore scale information about soil chemistry using XRF and SEM-EDX.

However, these models need to be translated to the field, catchment, regional etc. scale where an extra layer of data intensiveness enters as one needs to account for regional soil, atmosphere and climate heterogeneities. Thus, in addition to adding computing power to solve the environmental problems at all scales, we also need modelling technologies to translate the information across the scales. I will show as part of this talk a case study how I have done this to address problems of plant-soil interaction. I will also briefly highlight how the same modelling methodologies can be applied to a much wider range of problems; particularly human biomedical problems.
