In 2006, the data centers in the United States consumed 61.4 Billion KWhs, an amount of energy that is equivalent to that consumed by the entire transportation manufacturing industry. Worse, under current efficiency trends, this gigantic amount of energy will have nearly doubled by 2011 for an overall electricity cost of $7.4 Billion per year. In the first part of this talk, I will discuss these trends, identify the major energy consumers in data centers, and overview the approaches that have been proposed to manage their energy consumption. In the second part, I will introduce a new management approach that caps energy consumption over a period of time, while minimizing costs and satisfying all service-level agreements. The approach relies on workload prediction, mathematical optimization, and statistical performance data. The research described in the talk is being done in collaboration with Ozlem Bilgir, Kien Le, Margaret Martonosi, and Thu Nguyen.
