On September 23, the EPFL-WISH Foundation (Women in Science and Humanities) will hold the prestigious Erna Hamburger Prize and Conference, an event that brings into the limelight an influential, leading woman who is transforming her field and executing change.

This year to celebrate the 10th Anniversary, the WISH foundation will welcome Professor Jill Farrant, its first laureate of South Africa. Prof. Farrant is a leader in the field of plant responses to water deficit stress (drought/desiccation tolerance), receiving international recognition for her research. Her work on understanding the mechanisms employed by resurrection plants in order to tolerate desiccation has been fundamental to identifying genes of importance for improving drought tolerance of crops through bioengineering. She was also the African/Arab States recipient of the 2012 L'Oreal-UNESCO Award for Women in Science one of only five scientists worldwide who were selected by an international jury as "researchers who will have a major impact on society and help light the way to the future".

The Equal Opportunities Office is very excited to let you know that Prof. Farrant has also accepted to give a presentation of her research and career, during an informal lunch with female PhD students and postdocs from EPFL on Wednesday September 23rd at 12h15 in room PAC88 of the Pavillon A.

The event will consist of a presentation in English followed by informal discussions where you will be able to ask her any kind of questions. Sandwiches, coffee and cakes will be offered. The event will last until around 13:30/14:00. Would you need to go to class prior to the end, you will be able to leave the room easily.
