Riemann surfaces were introduced by Riemann in his thesis in 1851, and the moduli space of Riemann surfaces by him in his masterpiece on abelian
functions in 1857. Riemann surfaces and their moduli spaces haven been intensively and extensively studied since then.
In this expository talk, I will discuss some surprising facts in their historical development and some recent results.
